FIDE will discuss Carlsen incident soon: Anand
Stavanger (Norway):World no.1 Magnus Carlsen's fiery reaction after losing to D Gukesh in Norway Chess here was probably because he saw his authority in the game being challenged by someone so young, feels five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, who also indicated that FIDE could discuss the incident 'very soon'.
Frustrated by the loss to Gukesh in Round 6 of Norway Chess, Carlsen slammed his fist on the table sending the pieces flying all over before shouting 'Oh my God' and leaving the playing arena in a hurry, as millions of followers across the world watched the spectacle – some bewildered, some bemused.
Anand, who is known for his calm demeanour and gentlemanly style, said the 34-year-Norwegian desperately wanted to win against the Indian world champion and 'draw some line in the sand'. 'But it (beating Gukesh) mattered a lot to him. Even if all the other games he's kind of going through emotions (here)… But in this game (against Gukesh), I think something he wanted to establish. He wanted to draw some line in the sand and tell all these kids 'hang on a few years', whatever. But this meant a lot. I think a 2-0 (win against Gukesh) here, he would have been very, very happy,' Anand told PTI on the sidelines of Norway Chess on Wednesday.
The fact that he lost from a winning position perhaps exacerbated the frustration, opined Anand, who is international chess federation's (FIDE) deputy president and is here for broadcasting commitments as well. 'Against any opponent on earth, he would have hated losing such a good position. I mean to miss that the knight comes back. I felt exactly the same way when I blew my game against Magnus three years ago in 2022 in Norway,' added Anand.

South Africa born 25 year-old Scottish All-Rounder Brandon McMullen now ranks above the renowned Indian cricketer Kapil Dev, an all-time-great all-rounder (who guided India to their World Cup title in 1983), becoming the second fastest player to score a 1000 runs, and take 50 wickets in ODIs. He also surpassed the likes of Lance Klusener of South Africa, who was one of the best all-rounders of the 90s and the early 2000s, legendary Greg Chappell of Australia, and Bangladeshi cricketing icon, Shakib al-Hasan. McMullen achieved this feat during Scotland's match against Netherlands in the Netherlands Tri-Nation Series, which was the eleventh round of the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2. He took 33 matches to get the double, placing himself just below Netherlands' legend Ryan Ten Doeschate who took 28 innings to get the record. Scotland won the match by a comfortable margin of 44 runs. During the match itself McMullen got just 9 runs in 13 balls while batting (hitting two fours in the process), whilst Finlay McCreath scored 81 off 106 balls (seven fours and one six), and Mark Watt 60 off 72 balls (five fours and two sixes) – their half-centuries helping Scotland to get to 262/9 in 50 overs. Both Kohli and Rohit Sharma had announced their retirement from Tests ahead of the England series, which begins with the opening match in Leeds on June 20. "Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket. I think tactically any team will miss his captaincy. I think tactically he was a brilliant captain. Virat Kohli walks away from test cricket. Devastating! What an absolute champion he's been and test cricket will miss him," Clarke said. Shubman Gill has been named captain following Rohit's retirement. He definitely made the decision to retire and whatever his reasons are, everybody comes to that time in their career," said Clarke, who captained Australia in Tests and ODIs between 2011 and 2015. "If that's the case, then so be it. But if they don't perform, if they get beaten, like I say, 5-0 in England, which I don't think they will. I think they can still win in England, even without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. I think this Indian squad is a good squad,' he added. Clarke also heaped praise on young batter Sai Sudharsan for his impressive performances in the IPL for Gujarat Titans. "Forget he's the leading run scorer, but to me, this kid is a superstar. He left hander. I think he's a number three in test cricket. I think he's probably going to open the batting in time in India's T20 team. "He's in their test squad. He gets his first opportunity in England. I think he can walk straight into bat number three. I think technically he's very good. He's got all the shots and mentally he's ready. He really impressed me. And he's a good looking player as well. He's got that left hander backlift. He plays all the shots; against the quicks he'll take on the short ball..."
