India.com22-05-2025

New Delhi: India's food processing sector is on a transformative growth path, and with consumption trends aligning across urban and rural India, tier 2 and 3 cities are fast becoming the engines of economic growth, according to a new report.
The sector supports over 7 million jobs across the value chain, directly and indirectly, while enabling rural industrialisation and reducing post-harvest losses.
According to the report by Deloitte and FICCI, the sector accounts for approximately 7.7 per cent of India's total manufacturing GVA (gross value added), and its critical role in generating employment, fostering rural development and enhancing value addition.
The agriculture and food processing sector, representing nearly 30 per cent of the national food market, is gaining momentum due to rising rural demand, digital advancements and strong policy support.
'India's agri and food processing sector is on the brink of a transformative leap, where tradition meets cutting-edge technology to build a future-ready food ecosystem. Consumer demand is shifting towards clean-label, protein-rich and gut-friendly foods, driving a structural evolution in how India consumes food,' said Anand Ramanathan, Partner and Consumer Industry Leader, Deloitte South Asia.
India is poised to lead the global narrative on health-driven, tech-enabled and inclusive food systems, fuelled by advancements in AI, IoT and blockchain.
The opportunity before us is not just to feed a billion, but to do so with purpose, resilience and intelligence, he added.
'India's food processing sector holds immense transformative potential, both as a driver of economic growth and as a catalyst for inclusive development. As evolving consumer preferences and health-conscious choices reshape food systems, the need for resilience, innovation and value addition has never been greater,' said Jyoti Vij, Director General, FICCI.
In addition, India's record agricultural exports of $48.2 billion in FY24 and the global recognition of GI-tagged products highlight the sector's export potential and its growing role in the world food economy.

"The move, coupled with a lowered inflation outlook, is likely to support domestic consumption and stimulate credit demand in the coming quarters. Overall, we view this as a timely and positive intervention that can support a stronger credit cycle in FY26," Muthoot Banerjee, Partner and Leader - Economic Advisory at PwC India, said the policy rate easing, combined with the liquidity increase for banks when system liquidity is already comfortable, is likely to add a second engine to the consumption growth flight that is anticipated to be already in flight from the income tax cuts taking effect in FY26."With inflation under control, supporting growth is the main objective, especially considering the uncertainty in global trade. The RBI continues to peg FY26 growth at 6.5 per cent, but clearly sees a need to stimulate private demand and capital formation. This (liquidity) gives banks more headroom to transmit lower rates and improve credit flow - both to consumers and businesses," Vijay Kuppa, CEO of InCred Money, Goswami, CIO & MD - India Fixed Income at Franklin Templeton, said the RBI's bold move has surprised markets and underscores a clear pivot towards supporting growth amid subdued economic momentum and easing inflation."Upasna Bhardwaj, Chief Economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank , said, "The higher-than-expected repo rate cut comes along with a shift in the stance back to neutral. This clearly points towards future decisions being more data-dependent, given the significant global uncertainties."Gaura Sengupta - Chief Economist at IDFC FIRST Bank , said, "The front-loading of the rate cut action plus CRR cut indicates focus is on enhancing the transmission of monetary policy. The neutral stance indicates that the bar for further rate cut is higher but isn't completely off the table. In the next few policies, we expect the RBI to remain on pause".The RBI MPC decision will support India's growth amidst continued global volatilities, Hemant Jain, President at PHDCCI, the latest reduction, the RBI has cut interest rates by 100 basis points in 2025, starting with a quarter-point reduction in February - the first cut since May 2020 - and another similar-sized cut in rate cut comes as the Indian economy slowed to a four-year low of 6.5 per cent in the fiscal year that ended March. RBI projected the economy to grow by the same measure in the current financial year that started on April 1, as rising trade tensions following US President Donald Trump's tariff policies provide central bank lowered its inflation projection to 3.7 per cent for 2025-26 from 4 per cent earlier.

Indian digital forensics market to hit $1.39 bn by 2030: Deloitte-DSCI

The Indian digital forensics market is projected to reach $1.39 billion in the next five years, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 40 per cent, compared to the global market size of $14.5 billion over the same period. The market for digital forensics is recorded at $265.9 million as of financial year 2025 (FY25). In comparison, the global market is valued at $6.5 billion during the same period, according to a joint report by Deloitte and the Data Security Council of India (DSCI). Major drivers for the sector's growth in India include regulatory requirements guided by apex regulators such as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), and cybersecurity agency CERT-In. Compliance with key legislations such as the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act — which requires strict privacy safeguards, data protection measures, and breach notification protocols — is expected to further drive adoption. Broadly, factors leading to growing adoption of digital forensics include cybercrime, advancements across segments such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), regulatory compliance, and digital transformation across sectors such as banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), healthcare, and government. The Indian market, however, continues to face challenges such as a shortage of skilled staff to handle digital forensics. High costs and limited understanding deter small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from adopting in-house solutions, the report added. 'The sector presents a significant opportunity for growth, driven by rising enterprise demand, regulatory scrutiny and technological advancement. The way forward lies in accelerating capacity building, fostering innovation in indigenous tools, and embedding forensic readiness into the core of digital transformation strategies across sectors,' said Nikhil Bedi, Leader, Risk, Regulatory & Forensic, Deloitte India. The report added that the Centre, in 2024, introduced a scheme to improve forensic capabilities with a financial outlay of ₹2,254 crore by 2029. It is aimed at modernising forensic labs, training staff, and integrating the stream into law enforcement practices. It noted that government agencies lack standardised methodologies, tools and procedures, affecting the reliability and admissibility of digital evidence in court, while recommending domestic standards customised to local requirements. 'Investing in updated forensic tools tailored to handle emerging technologies, such as cloud and mobile forensics, is crucial. This includes leveraging AI and ML to streamline data analysis, automate processes and improve the accuracy and speed of forensic investigations,' it recommended.
