Air strike drills to be held in Surat, South Gujarat
Surat: To gauge preparedness for an air strike amid the ongoing tense situation between India and Pakistan, a drill will be held in the city and at all major population centres in South Gujarat on Wednesday. During the drill, citizens have been directed to turn off all lights between 7.30pm and 8pm.Following instructions from the Union home ministry, a civil defence drill , Operation Abhyas , has been planned. A meeting of top govt officials in the city was held on Tuesday to discuss the modalities. The drill will be held between 4pm and 8pm. A siren will sound at 4pm, after which a search and rescue drill will be held at five spots. The siren will be played from 51 locations by the Surat Municipal Corporation and by industrial units. Between 7.30pm and 8pm, a blackout will take place during which citizens are supposed to turn off their lights."The objective of the drill is to ensure that both the administration and citizens are prepared for a quick response during emergencies to ensure public safety. The drill simulates a war-like situation to keep citizens safe and alert," said Dr Saurabh Pardhi, district collector.The drill will involve simulated responses to potential air strikes, fire, rescue operations, transporting the injured to hospitals and relocating stranded individuals to safe areas. Emergency services will remain operational."It will be a comprehensive drill in which people will participate by turning off lights during the specified time. Fire, police, hospital and other agencies' preparedness will be practised. Streetlights and lights of hoardings will also be turned off," said Shalini Agarwal, the Surat municipal commissioner."People should only turn off their lights and not the power to buildings or their facilities. People should not panic and follow the instructions issued by the govt from time to time," said city police commissioner, Anupam Singh Gahlaut.

The census was put off due to the Covid-19 pandemic that disrupted all sectors across the globe, and its 'aftershock', the ministry of home affairs said on Thursday, a day after the Union government announced that the long-delayed exercise will be carried out in two phases before March 1 2027. The ministry also sought to address concerns raised by Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin about Census-linked delimitation exercise, saying that home minister Amit Shah has clarified on many occasions that concerns of southern states will be addressed at an appropriate time. The Census was supposed to be conducted in 2021 and all the preparations for the exercise were completed, a statement from the ministry said. '...however, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country, the Census work was postponed. The aftershock of Covid-19 continued for quite some time,' it said, further explaining that countries which conducted Census immediately after Covid-19 faced issues on 'quality and coverage' of data. While the opposition has questioned the delay in the exercise, the MHA said that had that exercise been conducted in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, it would have adversely affected the education sector. 'COVID disrupted all sectors including education. Around 30 lakh enumerators are needed for Census. Enumerators, who are primary school teachers, are key persons for conducting Census. Conducting Census after Covid could have disrupted primary education immensely,' the statement by the ministry said. The MHA added that the budget has never been a constraint for conducting the Census as allocation of funds is always ensured by the government. India's 16th Census with caste enumeration will be carried out in 2027 with the reference date of October 1, 2026, in snow-bound areas like Ladakh and of March 1, 2027, in the rest of the country. It has been decided to conduct the Population Census-2027 in two phases, along with the enumeration of castes, the MHA announced on Wednesday. Following the announcement, the Congress said there was no reason to delay the exercise for another 23 months. In a post on X, Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh said, '…The Modi Government is capable only of generating headlines, not meeting deadlines.'

Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers and senior BJP leaders took part in 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative, marking the World Environment Day on Thursday. Sharing on the Telugu social media handle of 'X' on Thursday, Modi, while sharing planting a sapling said, 'Recently, when I visited Gujarat, I was gifted a Sindoora sapling by the brave mothers and sisters of Kutch, who set an example of courage and sacrifice in the 1971 war.' Adding further, the PM said, 'On this World Environment Day, I am honoured to plant this sacred sapling at the Prime Minister's residence in New Delhi. This sapling will forever stand as a living symbol of the indomitable spirit and inspiring valour of India's Nari Shakti.' Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, planted saplings at his official residence in Delhi on World Environment Day. Several students from government schools in Khammam district, who topped this year's Class X results, also participated in the programme. While congratulating the students on their achievements and presenting them with shawls, Kishan Reddy inquired about their future goals and encouraged them to work continuously until they achieve them. He emphasised that many individuals are actively serving Mother Earth by protecting the environment, and we should all draw inspiration from their efforts. He called on everyone to unite in tree planting while reducing pollutants, including carbon emissions and plastic use. Sharing a picture of a sapling he had planted a year ago, Kishan Reddy stated, 'The #EkPedMaaKeNaam initiative is more than just planting trees. It's about nurturing them with care, reconnecting with nature, and honouring our responsibility to protect Mother Earth.' He shared this message with the Prime Minister. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, remarked that planting saplings is the best way to combat climate change and safeguard future generations. He urged all Indian citizens to plant a sapling in the name of their mother as a contribution to environmental protection. To mark World Environment Day, Bandi Sanjay planted saplings at his official residence in Jantar Mantar, in the national capital, alongside his office staff. He encouraged everyone to view planting saplings as a social responsibility in the fight against climate change. Additionally, he emphasised the collective duty to conserve biodiversity and ensure green spaces for future generations, advocating that every government employee and citizen should plant a sapling in honour of their mother under the slogan 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.' He concluded by stating that environmental protection begins at home, and planting trees as a symbol of a mother's affection and nurturing serves as a meaningful tribute.

On Thursday, the Northern Railway announced the commencement of regular services of the Vande Bharat Express trains between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, which will start on June 7. The services will operate six days a week, enhancing connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the prominent pilgrimage destination. Two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains, Train Nos. 26404/26403 and 26401/26402 were introduced on the Srinagar-Katra-Srinagar route, with an intermediate halt at Banihal. The trains were set to operate six days a week, excluding Wednesdays.
