Williams boss James Vowles vows no more confusion over team orders

– Williams have made changes to avoid repeating the situation in Miami where Carlos Sainz mistakenly thought Alex Albon had ignored orders not to pass, team boss James Vowles said on May 13.
Sainz complained after the May 4 Formula One race that he had been made to 'feel stupid' after being informed that Albon would hold his position, only for the Thai to then overtake.
'That is not how I go racing. I don't care. I've lost a lot of confidence here, on everything,' the Spaniard, who joined from Ferrari in January, said over the team radio.
But Vowles told reporters at the team factory that the matter had been resolved in about two minutes, once he sat down with the drivers after the race.
Albon ended up fifth, with Sainz ninth, in Williams' best result in six races so far this season.
The team are fifth in the standings going into this weekend's Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.
Vowles said Miami was the first time Williams had to do serious team orders since he took charge, and it was down to a cooling issue on Albon's car that meant he needed to overtake or fall back by more than a second to get air into the radiator.
The problem triggered a lengthy discussion between engineers about what to do and one of them assured Sainz that 'Alex won't attack', while the other was still debating the best course of action.
Sainz has formed a strong pairing with Albon since he joined the resurgent former champions and the incident was the first apparent flare-up between them.
'I can give you a guarantee it won't happen again with what we've changed,' added Vowles.
'Race engineers, actually for a lot of it, are parrots. So if you give them a long-winded thing, they have to start thinking through and break it up,' he replied, when asked what had been done.
'If you give an instruction – 'do not overtake' – I guarantee you that will go to the cars and the cars won't overtake.
'But that's not what we did (in Miami). It was a long discussion of all that was going wrong, what corner it was going wrong and how to mitigate against it with an instruction embedded in there.
'It just needs to be short, concise, to the point with the right person communicating to the right people, in the right moment, that's it.'

South Korea coach says Son won't be pushed too hard in 2026 qualifiers

South Korea captain Son Heung-min will be used sparingly in their World Cup qualifiers against Iraq and Kuwait as he builds up his match fitness following his return from a foot injury, coach Hong Myung-bo said on Monday. South Korea, who lead Group B by three points, face Iraq in Basra on June 5 before returning home for their final qualifier of the third round against Kuwait five days later. The Koreans will qualify for their 11th successive World Cup if they avoid defeat by Iraq, who last month appointed former Australia boss Graham Arnold as their head coach. Son has been dealing with the injury for the past two months and was restricted to a substitute's appearance in Tottenham Hotspur's 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final. "He and I have not yet discussed exactly how much he will play. But my staff and I already know all about his drive and his desire to play," Hong told reporters. "Since we have two matches coming up (to try to qualify for the World Cup), I will not push him too hard. Once we get to Iraq, we will decide which of the two matches we will focus on." The 56-year-old said Son's experience would be invaluable in Iraq even if he does not play. "We will probably play in a hostile environment in front of partisan fans," he added. "We have some players who have had experience playing in these situations. It's something we should keep in mind going into the stadium for this match." 'Hand of Neymar' earns Brazilian red card in potential Santos send off

Neymar has spoken about the impact Diego Maradona had on his career after meeting him as a child but his bid to emulate the late Argentine great's "Hand of God" goal backfired on Sunday when he was sent off in what could be his last game for Santos. With Santos and Botafogo locked at 0-0 heading into the last 15 minutes of their Brazilian league game, Neymar launched himself at a rebound in the penalty area and steered the ball into the net with his hand. The Brazilian was quickly surrounded by furious Botafogo players before the referee flashed a second yellow card at the forward, cutting short his first start for the club since he made his return from injury last month. Rubbing salt into the wound, Botafogo scored with four minutes left to secure a 1-0 victory. The 33-year-old former Barcelona and Paris St Germain attacker later apologised to his team and fans. "I made a mistake, forgive me!" he posted on social media. "Today, if I hadn't been sent off, I'm sure we would have gotten the three points. You can count these three points against me!" Neymar had returned to his boyhood club Santos in January after a stint at Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal, with his contract at the Brazilian side running until June 30. The red card rules him out of Santos's match against Fortaleza on Thursday, meaning he will only be able to play for the club again if he extends his contract before the league's resumption in July following the Club World Cup. Santos are 18th in the league having lost seven of their 11 matches. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Cruz Azul thrash Vancouver Whitecaps to win CONCACAF Champions Cup

Soccer Football - CONCACAF Champions Cup - Final - Cruz Azul v Vancouver Whitecaps - Estadio Olimpico Mexico 1968, Mexico City, Mexico - June 1, 2025 Cruz Azul's Ignacio Rivero lifts the trophy with teammates after winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup REUTERS/Henry Romero MEXICO CITY - Mexican club Cruz Azul clinched a record-equalling seventh CONCACAF Champions Cup title with a crushing 5-0 victory over Canada's Vancouver Whitecaps in the final at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday. A dominant performance in front of an ecstatic home crowd saw Cruz Azul join Mexican rivals America as the most successful clubs in the 60-year history of the competition and also secured them a spot in the 2029 Club World Cup. Vicente Sanchez was only appointed Cruz Azul's coach in January and while there have been reports suggesting he may leave the club he said his only focus was on repaying the faith shown in him. "Giving back to the people who trusted in me is the best thing that can happen, today we are giving an international title to Cruz Azul," the Uruguayan told reporters. "The truth is that I live in today, I'm happy, I don't think about the future." The hosts struck early, taking the lead in the eighth minute as Carlos Rotondi slid in to square the ball for captain Ignacio Rivero, who calmly finished in a one-on-one. Lorenzo Faravelli doubled the lead 20 minutes later, winning back the ball and unleashing a superb strike that curled in off the far post, before Angel Sepulveda added another from close range in the 37th minute. Mateusz Bogusz made it 4-0 seconds before the break and Sepulveda scored his second goal with a powerful header five minutes into the second half as he became the tournament's top scorer with nine goals. Major League Soccer side Vancouver failed to record a single shot in the entire match and were left frustrated in their bid to become the first Canadian team to win the continental title. "We came with hope and aspiration and ambition, of course now there's devastation," Vancouver coach Jesper Sorensen told reporters. "We made a great tournament, we've beaten great teams on our way but today we couldn't put on a performance to beat a really good team like Cruz Azul, that's how sometimes it is with sports. "I feel sorry for the players... to win we needed our best performance and today it was quite the opposite. Cruz Azul was just better in every aspect."
