Sulzbacher village and Jacksonville mayor celebrate early learning class graduation of 2025

Yahoo6 days ago

Mayor Donna Deegan and community leaders honored the newest graduating class of the Sulzbacher early learning center at the Sulzbacher Village Wednesday morning.
Seven students graduated Wednesday morning, with all the students having gone through the program from six weeks old to five years of age.
'The ultimate goal of the early learning center is not just to prepare these kids for Kindergarten, but prepare them for life,' explained Soarve O'Neal, director for the Sulzbacher Early Learning & School Program.
'By giving them social skills, by giving them back their voice to say 'hey, do you see me? I have something to say.' We want them to be productive citizens with a voice.'

Jamie Lewis's five year old daughter, Emmy, was one of the seven to graduate, and told Action News Jax the program has made a world of difference in her little girl's life already.
'This program has definitely prepared her for life in general, because in life you're gonna experience new things,' Lewis explained. 'So this program has definitely honed in on those fearful feelings and just not sure, but they've nurtured them and so yeah, they're ready.'

With the hope now - that the program put those children on the right path in their early years, especially knowing that a child's reading level by third grade is a strong predictor of future success.
'It is very important to grab them now. Teach them that books are not our enemies, but that books are our friends. It is cool to be smart,' O'Neal explained.
'That way it ensures that they are going to study, they are gonna take pride in getting what they need to know by third grade.'
Sulzbacher leaders are now focused on the next group of students looking into expanding their horizons before they enter the school system.

St. Johns County Commissioners extend administrator's contract 3 years amid tense debate

St. Johns County's Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday extended the contract of its County Administrator. This comes weeks after Action News Jax's Ben Becker confirmed that Joy Andrews applied for the Palm Beach County Administrator position, then withdrew her name from consideration. 'I made a decision, regardless of the differences of opinion about me or my role or how I'm performing, my hope is that I can at least show my commitment to my staff, my children, my community who have shown up today,' Andrews said at Tuesday's meeting. County Commissioner Krista Joseph, who has been a critic of Andrews, said during the meeting she was now 'all for' Andrews, but said she just wanted to see more initiatives fully completed. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] 'I haven't seen a lot of the goals completed. I've seen them on their way, but not completed. The Black History Museum, it's not a done deal. There are so many things, the World Golf, the FCC, the comprehensive plan, the tree ordinance. When I see those things accomplished, I'm like all for you. I do, we do work together great when we do the agendas. I don't have any problem with Joy. I just want to see accomplishment and reward accomplishment with an increase in time or salary,' Joseph said. By a 3-2 vote, the commissioners gave Andrews a three-year contract extension on top of 18 months remaining on her existing contract, keeping her on through 2030. Her pay remains $285,000 a year plus annual cost of living increases. In an email that was sent last month, Andrews wrote she was withdrawing from consideration because she wants to see through 'critical initiatives' in St. Johns County. 'Given the politics at the time, I briefly considered all my options,' Andrews said in a statement to Becker in May. 'I am 100% committed to St. Johns County and it has been my family's home for more than two decades. I'm grateful for the support of a majority of the commission and look forward to working together for years to come.' Andrews has served as county administrator since 2023, following the abrupt resignation of her predecessor, Hunter Conrad. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] In January, St. Johns County Board Chair Krista Joseph introduced a motion of no confidence in Andrews, a move that signaled internal tension within the county leadership. That motion was ultimately voted down by the rest of the board, allowing Andrews to retain her position. St. Johns County Commissioners discuss proposed e-bike ordinance

St. Johns County leaders are considering how to regulate e-bikes in the county after two middle school students were hurt in separate e-bike crashes. Attorney Rich Komando presented his proposed draft ordinance to county commissioners. But the county leaders had more questions about some of the items in the draft proposal. The amended e-bike ordinance would do some things like: Ban people younger than 14 from riding the e-bikes Require those under 18 to wear helmets when operating the e-bikes And require e-bikes to go no more than 10 mph on a sidewalk Some of the Commissioners argued that some points of the proposed draft items, like wearing a helmet while operating the bikes, are already law by state statute, though. 'I don't think having a draft for e-bikes is a bad thing, but what I would love to do is workshops,' Commissioner Clay Murphy said. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Murphy and some other county leaders on the board said that they would rather see more education around the e-bikes instead of more redundant laws. Other leaders like Commissioner Sarah Arnold believe that a draft ordinance would do no good without the accountability and collaboration of parents. 'It does come to being a parenting issue. And as a parent of four, I can say that. And when my kids screw up on their motorized vehicles they lose the keys,' she said. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] In the end, county leaders decided on a resolution in the case of an amended e-bike ordinance. The county leaders will likely revisit this conversation. Action News Jax will be sure to bring you the latest here online and on air.
