Old-fashioned wedding trend makes surprising comeback - as brides inspired by Hailey Bieber and Sofia Ritchie splurge on 19th century accessory
There's nothing quite like the moment a bride's veil is lifted during her wedding ceremony to reveal her face - it always draws gasps and tears from all in attendance.
Wedding veils are largely seen nowadays as an accessory to complete the bridal look, but they used to be heavy with symbolism which, in recent years, has been deemed 'old-fashioned'.
While they have remained fairly popular through the years, there was a time when brides were eschewing the traditional accessory in favour of more modern ones like flower crowns and hair pins, says Gemma Logan, wedding expert at Book a Party.
But experts say veils are now back in a big way, with brides opting for more elaborate designs, bespoke customisations, and luxurious materials like real silk, detailed lace and embroidery.
The vision of a bride entirely enrobed in white became ingrained in society around the middle of the 19th century, according to the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Some historians believe that the practice of obscuring the bride's face was thought to ward off evil spirits. Later, veils became a symbol of a bride's chastity and purity for her husband - as well as a status symbol.
Bridal couture designer Phillipa Lepley - who designed the veils worn by Geri Halliwell, Alice Naylor-Leyland, Flora Vesterberg and Princess Charlotte of Bourbon Two Sicillies - explains to FEMAIL: 'During the Victorian era, the veil evolved into a symbol of social status, with its weight, length, and quality reflecting the bride's position in society.'
In modern times, the symbolic significance of wearing a veil has shifted, Lepley says. 'Most modern brides select a veil based on personal preference or aesthetic appeal. Whether worn over the face or draped down the back, in my view both styles are elegant and graceful.'
Sofia Ritchie's short but chic custom Chanel dewdrop veil was adorned with resin water droplets to create a sparkling effect as she walked down the aisle towards her husband, Elliot Grainge at their wedding in 2023
Sarah Jane, who founded her custom wedding veil design brand Britten Weddings in 2009, adds that the COVID pandemic also had an impact on demand, with longer, more dramatic veils falling out of fashion as newlyweds were forced to have smaller courthouse weddings that called for more casual wedding wear.
Phillipa, whose couture veils have been worn most recently by Princess Aisha of Jordan during her wedding ceremony with Kareem Yazeed Al Mufti, says that the traditional veiled look - where the veil is worn on the back of the bride's head, framing her like a halo and flowing down her back - remains popular, but an increasing number of brides are opting to cover their faces.
'Since the Royal Wedding in 2011 and various other high-profile celebrity ceremonies, more brides are opting to walk down the aisle with their veil blusher actually covering their face.
'I have always thought that is the most romantic, beautiful look, for a once-in-a-lifetime moment.'
Sarah Jane adds that a face-shrouding veil is seen as a more 'high-impact fashion accessory' among younger brides.
'They love the drama of that 'reveal' moment for the camera, but afterwards they'll often switch to a second-look mini veil for dancing!'
Personalised veils are becoming more popular, driven by celebrities like Hailey Bieber - whose 75-foot-long tulle veil with lace flower embroidery also featured the words 'Till Death Do Us Part' - and Kourtney Kardashian, whose sweeping veil was hand-embroidered with a depiction of the Virgin Mary inspired by a tattoo on her husband Travis Barker's head.
Phillipa says her brand has seen an increase in brides who have gotten their wedding dress elsewhere but want to complete the look with a 'totally bespoke, exceptionally special veil' from her and her team.
'One bride included her beloved pooch's paw prints within her bespoke design,' she adds. Brides are also increasingly opting for 'intricate hand embroidery frequently featuring initials or family crests', or 'heirloom veils adorned with a cartouche on the centre back'.
Explaining why bespoke veils are all the rage right now, Sarah Jane says: 'We are in a 'statement veil' era because the veil is the one part of a bridal look that's a completely blank canvas.
'Gowns are trending cleaner and more minimalist, so the veil is where you get to indulge a bit. Budgets have gone up since 2020, the average bride spends more on their wedding and more on their veil.
'Lots of reasons for this but social media and influencers must be top of the list. Embroidery is huge and was really boosted by Hailey Bieber.'
Brides are also experimenting with colour in their veils more, Gemma says, moving beyond the traditional ivory or white.
'Some brides are going for soft blush pinks, champagne or even bold, unexpected colours like deep emerald or navy blue.
'It's all about matching the veil with the overall feel of the wedding and the bride's personality.'
The demand for wedding veils that stand out is only ticking upwards. More recently, Millie Bobby Brown wore a custom Monvieve Franca lace-trimmed veil that showcased the elaborate Italian handmade lace when pooled on the ground when she wed Jake Bongiovi in May 2024, while Sofia Richie sent every bride in 2023 swooning over her short but stunning sparkling dew drop veil.
Phillipa describes veils as 'more than just a bridal accessory'. 'They embody romance and tradition. I particularly love the way in which veils can evolve into treasured heirlooms, adding a meaningful, sustainable dimension to their significance.
'We hear of veils being lovingly draped over a cradle, transforming it into a cherished keepsake that carries the history and love of the family through generations. In this way, veils become enduring symbols of love, legacy, and memory.'

Love Island star's secret connection to previous finalist is revealed ahead of their arrival in the villa
Love Island has confirmed the full line-up of contestants set to enter the villa for the 12th series on June 9, for another season of love triangles, bedroom trysts and messy breakups. After joining the popular dating series in January 2023, Maya Jama will once again be at the helm, as the ITV2 show celebrates a decade on screens and promises to have 'more twists and turns than ever before' in honour of the anniversary. This year's crop of hopefuls include a Declan Rice body double, a firebreather and a Maura Higgins lookalike. But one of the new Islanders may have an edge on his fellow castmates, as he boasts a connection to a previous finalist. According to The Sun, Dejon Noel-Williams is pals with 2023 star Tyrique Hyde, who made it all the way to the final with then-girlfriend Ella Thomas. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Dejon, who plays football semi-professionally alongside his job as a personal trainer, is also the son of former Premier League striker Gifton. Ex-Watford and Stoke striker Gifton, 45, began his professional football career in 1996 and last played for Codicote in 2017 before retiring. And during his time at Watford from 1996 to 2003, he was teammates with none other than Micah Hyde, who is the father of Tyrique. The two stars played together at the club and looked to have been good friends, with their sons Dejon and Tyrique being the same age. The two boys also both followed in their fathers' footsteps by becoming footballers themselves. And in his role as a personal trainer, Dejon also counts Tyrique as one of his clients, with the duo often sharing videos of them working out at the gym together. Ahead of his villa entrance, Dejon revealed that he 'met all kinds of famous people' because of his footballing father and even remarked on a meeting with David Beckham. He said: 'When I was younger it was weird because he was just my dad, but we'd go to a game and fans were asking for photos. I've met David Beckham, he was really nice.' Dejon, from London, boasts 11,000 followers on social media thanks in part to his regular shirtless gym snaps and in 2021, represented the Grenada national football team. His bio reads: 'I go beyond the gym -helping you build Strength, Confidence & Discipline for life.' Asked what he was looking for in a girl in the villa, he said he wanted someone who 'is beautiful on the inside and out, looks after themselves and is healthy'. Tyrique shot to fame on the 2023 series with his romance with Ella being heavily tested with some dramatic ups and downs. They exited the villa together, but shortly after announced they'd split in November 2023, before trying to give it another go. But, in February 2024, MailOnline exclusively revealed Ella and Tyrique had parted ways permanently - after six months as a couple. A source told MailOnline: 'Ella and Tyrique have decided it's time to go their separate ways. 'They have such love for each other, but they often struggle to get along and as viewers saw in the villa, they're always arguing.' Tyrique and Ella exited the villa together, but shortly after announced they'd split in November 2023, before trying to give it another go, before parting ways permanently in February last year (pictured in September 2023) Meanwhile, Dejon is not the only footballing connection in the upcoming series, as fans of the lower leagues may have spotted a star dubbed 'The Surrey Zidane'. Harry Cooksley, 29, is a midfielder for Southern League Premier South side Farnham Town, while also working as a gold trader and model. But more interestingly, his pastimes include being a body double for Arsenal and England star Declan Rice. Harry revealed: 'So when he does a shoot, any body close ups will actually be me. Rylan Clark admits he felt like a 'complete failure' after his divorce from ex-husband Dan Neal
has emotionally admitted he felt like a 'failure' following his divorce from ex-husband Dan Neal. The TV presenter, 36, split with Dan in 2021 after six years of marriage when Rylan admitted he cheated on him. On what would have been their ten-year wedding anniversary this year, Rylan got candid about how he felt following the divorce. Speaking on his new podcast Rylan: How to Be in Love with Stephen Fry, he said: 'We got married in 2015. 'That same year, yeah. So it would have been my 10 year anniversary this year.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Stephen then asked if Rylan felt any kind of responsibility to represent gay marriage, as one of the few LGBTQ + celebrities. He asked: 'But did you feel also that - when it broke up and you were divorced – did you feel that there was in some sense you were letting down the idea of gay marriage, because we have a duty to show that our marriages are as robust and strong as any heterosexual?' Rylan said: 'There was part of me that just felt like a complete and utter failure. I felt like I'd failed personally, but I felt like I'd found publicly on behalf of - the gays! You know, I'm not, I'm not 'head gay', it's not that.' Stephen reassured: 'No, you're not, exactly. You're not a poster child for gayness.' Rylan continued: 'But you do feel like, yeah I'm going to get married, I want to get married, I can get married. 'But when it doesn't work out you don't want people to go, "you see that's why they f****** shouldn't get married".' Stephen was quick to insist: 'You can get married again if you want…', causing Rylan to hint at his divorce struggles as he quipped: 'Yeah with a prenup this time, I'm not going through that again.' Rylan previously revealed his own infidelity during his marriage with Dan caused the downfall of their relationship. After he revealed that he had been unfaithful, Dan eventually ended the relationship after the heart-wrenching confession. Following the heartbreak and the deterioration of his marriage, Rylan had suicidal thoughts and his weight dropped to just nine stone. He opened up about these challenging times in his second autobiography, TEN: The Decade That Changed My Future. In the book, he penned a candid reflection and said: 'I got in a relationship quite young and just went with it. Now I know I'm my own person. I'm not going to settle for something that's not right. In a way it's been a bit of a gift.' 'I'm happy to have sex with someone and that's that, that's not a problem. But do I want more? Of course I want more. Am I going to enjoy myself on the way? Abso-f***ing-lutely.'

An Olympics-style operation and the major difference between UK and US coverage: INSIDE TENNIS goes behind the scenes with TNT Sports at the French Open
It is towards the end of my peek behind the curtain when we duck into a bunker-type room, completely dark other than thousands of dials, switches and buttons - and the light coming from an enormous wall of screens. Bank on bank of monitors showing courts, crowds, backstage shots and interviews. A crew member remarks: 'That's what covering 18 courts, in 19 languages, in 49 countries looks like.' Mail Sport has gone behind the scenes on the gargantuan broadcasting operation that is TNT Sport at the French Open 2025.
