Kilmar Abrego Garcia Returned to U.S. and Facing Charges
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man who was mistakenly deported to an El Salvadoran prison in March, has been returned to the U.S. to face criminal charges related to the transportation of undocumented immigrants, according to a federal indictment that was unsealed on Friday.
Abrego Garcia, who entered the U.S. illegally years ago, was deported in March despite a 2019 federal court order that protected him from removal to El Salvador. His case sparked national outrage and warnings from some legal scholars that it put the U.S. at risk of a constitutional crisis, as the Trump Administration opposed multiple court orders, including one from the Supreme Court, to take steps to 'facilitate' Abrego Garcia's return to the U.S.
Now, Abrego Garcia is back in U.S. custody, but is facing federal criminal charges. The 10-page indictment, filed in Federal District Court in Nashville, alleges that Abrego Garcia belongs to the MS-13 gang and participated in a conspiracy to 'transport thousands of undocumented aliens' across the U.S.
The Administration has argued without verification that Abrego Garcia is a member of MS-13, which it has designated a foreign terrorist organization, since he was deported.
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the charges in a press conference, thanking El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele for agreeing to return Abrego Garcia to the U.S.
'This is what American justice looks like,' Bondi said. 'Upon completion of his sentence, we anticipate he will be returned to his home country of El Salvador.'
Abrego Garcia's lawyers told news outlets that his return on Friday made clear that the Trump Administration had the power to bring him back to the U.S., adding that it was now up to the 'judicial system to see that Mr. Abrego Garcia receives the due process that the constitution guarantees to all persons.'
'Today's actions proves what we've known all along—that the Administration had the ability to bring him back and just refused to do so,' Andrew Rossman, a lawyer for Abrego Garcia, said in a statement to multiple outlets.

Protesters and immigration authorities face off for a second day in LA area after arrests
PARAMOUNT, Calif. (AP) — Tear gas and smoke filled the air on the southern outskirts of Los Angeles on Saturday as confrontations between immigration authorities and demonstrators extended into a second day and top Trump administration officials vowed to prosecute anyone who interferes with enforcement. Border Patrol personnel in riot gear and gas masks stood guard outside an industrial park in the city of Paramount, deploying tear gas as bystanders and protesters gathered on medians and across the street. Some jeered at officers while recording the events on smartphones. 'ICE out of Paramount. We see you for what you are,' a woman said through a megaphone. 'You are not welcome here.' One handheld sign read, 'No Human Being is Illegal.' Smoke rose from burning shrubbery and refuse in the street, and demonstrators kicked at a Border Patrol vehicle. A boulevard was closed to traffic as Border Patrol agents circulated through the area. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted a message on social media addressing 'LA rioters' and warning that interference with immigration enforcement will not be tolerated. 'You will not stop us or slow us down,' Noem said on the X platform. Immigration and Customs Enforcement 'will enforce the law. And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.' Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers executed search warrants at multiple locations Friday, including outside a clothing warehouse in the fashion district. The action came after a judge found probable cause that the employer was using fictitious documents for some of its workers, according to representatives for Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Attorney's Office. A tense scene unfolded outside as a crowd tried to block agents from driving away. Advocates for immigrants' rights said there were also migration detentions outside Home Depot stores and a doughnut shop. DHS said in a statement that recent ICE operations in Los Angeles resulted in the arrest of 118 immigrants. Following the Friday arrests, protesters gathered in the evening outside a federal detention center, chanting, 'Set them free, let them stay!' Some held signs with anti-ICE slogans, and some some scrawled graffiti on the building. Among those arrested at the protests was David Huerta, regional president of the Service Employees International Union. Justice Department spokesperson Ciaran McEvoy confirmed that he was being held Saturday at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled Monday court appearance. It was not clear whether Huerta had legal representation. Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for his immediate release. In a social media post, he cited a 'disturbing pattern of arresting and detaining American citizens for exercising their right to free speech.' The immigration arrests come as President Donald Trump and his administration push to fulfill promises of mass deportations across the country. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the activity was meant to 'sow terror' in the nation's second-largest city. In a statement Saturday, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons chided Bass for the city's response to the protests. 'Mayor Bass took the side of chaos and lawlessness over law enforcement,' Lyons said. WorldPride March in Washington thumbs nose at Trump
Rainbow flags flooded Washington's streets on Saturday as the US capital celebrated WorldPride with a massive show of support for LGBTQ rights, which are facing an assault by the Trump administration. "We just have to show this administration, that we are united, that we cannot be broken," said Amy Froelich, a 46-year-old artist and teacher, dressed in a rainbow-colored jumpsuit. "We need to be an ally to our brothers and sisters and our trans community," she said, seated next to her wife on green chairs near the starting line for a massive parade that marks the culmination of weeks of festivities. "All of our laws and any protections that we've been working so hard for (are) getting reversed." The WorldPride festival, a rotating global event advocating for LGBTQ equality worldwide, is being hosted in Washington this year -- a stone's throw from the White House and a president seemingly intent on rolling back rights hard-won by that community. Since returning to power in January, Donald Trump and his administration have slapped back LGBTQ rights gained in recent decades, in particular by members of the trans community. On his first day in office, Trump declared the federal government would recognize only two genders -- men and women -- and he has since targeted transgender people in a slew of other orders. Transgender American actress Laverne Cox, best known for her role in the series "Orange is the New Black," addressed the crowd at the parade starting line. "I knew I had to be here, surrounded by community, because you give me so much hope," she said. "I don't have any faith in our government... but I have faith in you." - 'Big dark cloud' - A few meters away, standing on the roof of the first bus in the parade, Yasmin Benoit, who came from Britain to show support for the US LGBT community, waved to the crowd. "We are literally on Trump's doorstep right now, and I'm sure he's not thrilled about all of this," the 28-year-old model and activist told AFP. Benoit said she had been detained by border police upon her arrival in the United States, but was finally allowed to enter. "It's definitely not the easiest place to come to, but I feel like that makes it a little more important to try," she said. Trump's policies are on the minds of many taking part in this year's festival. "It's been a big dark cloud since he was elected really," said Ginny Kinsey, sitting in the shade with a friend. Her wife, she said, had been working as a federal civil servant, but had been forced to change careers amid government funding cuts. "My wife just switched jobs in the government, and she made the decision to not be out at her new job, (as) she was in her previous job," she said. "People are just hiding again." - 'Unfair' - Trying to cool off with his fan under the blazing Washington sun, Bill George, 74, said he had come "to celebrate who we are." "We're as human as anybody else." The retiree, who came out in 1975, has taken part in a number of demonstrations for LGBTQ rights, as well as for human rights and civil rights over the years. "Conservatism is a wave, that is actually attacking us again," he told AFP, adding that he was furious with the Trump administration.
