Cop's son held after 8 days for hit-run that left footballer critical
Ahmedabad: A cop's son was caught by the city traffic police on Thursday for driving his Mercedes at speed and hitting two young footballers on May 14 near the Palladium Ahmedabad mall flyover.

One of those footballers remains in a critical condition eight days after being hit by the car on the flyover.
The driver, Vijay Desai, son of a serving police head constable of Ahmedabad Rural police, Vaghji Desai, was arrested after a delayed investigation that has drawn public criticism. The incident occurred around 12.30am on May 14 near the mall. Andre Rahul Bhatia, a former St Xavier's football team captain, was hit from behind while riding his two-wheeler.
The car did not stop. Bhatia was left unconscious on the road, suffering a brain haemorrhage, fractures, and serious facial injuries.
He is currently on ventilator support in a private hospital's ICU.
Bhatia's family has launched a crowdfunding campaign seeking Rs 30 lakh for his treatment, citing financial distress. His sister has also appealed for help through online platforms. Despite the severity of the case, it took police eight days to make the arrest.
Investigators recovered a broken Mercedes logo at the crash site and contacted the manufacturer's Mumbai office. That led them to the original car owner, who confirmed selling the vehicle three months ago to Vijay Desai for Rs 18.5 lakh.
Phone location data placed Vijay Desai at the scene of the crash, prompting police to arrest him.
The delayed arrest has led to concerns about alleged preferential treatment due to the accused's family background. Inspector R V Vinchhi of SG-1 traffic division said that Vijay was arrested after collecting evidence against him, including phone location data.

Rs 54 crore to boost police infrastructure in north Chennai
CHENNAI: Acting on Chief Minister M K Stalin's directive, the state government has sanctioned Rs 54.36 crore for strengthening police infrastructure and public safety under the North Chennai Development Plan (Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam). The funds, approved through the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), will be used to enhance surveillance, build new facilities and promote welfare initiatives for police personnel and the public. Supreme Court slaps notice on KTR over alleged Musi scam
Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to KT Rama Rao in the case related to the BRS leader's allegations of corruption by the Congress government to the tune of Rs 25,000 crore in Musi. A hearing was held in the Supreme Court on Friday on the petition filed by Congress leader Atram Suguna. A bench comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma heard the petition. Rama Rao had previously alleged that the Congress government had committed a scam of Rs 25,000 crore in the name of Musi rejuvenation. Expressing strong objection to the allegations made by KTR, Congress leader Atram Suguna filed a complaint at the Utnur police station. The police registered a case against KTR based on the complaint of the Congress leader. KTR had earlier approached the Telangana High Court to quash the case registered against him. After hearing the arguments, the High Court gave a verdict quashing the FIR registered against KTR. However, Suguna filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court verdict. The hearing on this was held on Friday and the Supreme Court issued notices to KTR asking him to reply to the petition.

Hundi theft accused arrested, cash recovered
Rajamahendravaram: In a breakthrough in a series of temple hundi thefts, East Godavari district police arrested Parepalli Bobby of Anuru village in Thondangi mandal in Kakinada district. They recovered stolen cash Rs 95,030 from the accused. The arrest was disclosed by Central Zone DSP K Ramesh Babu during a press briefing on Friday. Following the recent hundi thefts in East Godavari and Rajamahendravaram rural areas, district SP D Narasimha Kishore took the issue seriously and formed a special investigation team under the direction of Additional SP (Crimes) Arjun. The team, led by III Town CI V Appa Rao, included SI V Appalaraju, HC T Lova Kumar, and PCs B Vijay Kumar, P Mahesh Kumar, K Pavan Kumar, and K Srinivas. The DSP stated that the team successfully tracked down the suspect using both traditional investigation methods and technical surveillance. Based on credible information, the accused was intercepted during a vehicle check at Lingampeta. On noticing the police check, he attempted to flee by reversing his auto but was chased down and apprehended. During questioning, the accused confessed to committing several temple hundi thefts. The police seized Rs 95,030 in cash, an auto used in the crimes, an electrical cutter used to break locks, and a mobile phone from his possession. DSP Ramesh Babu revealed that the 25-year-old youth, who developed a habit of gambling and partying, was inspired by crime videos and movies on YouTube. He rented an auto and roamed temple areas, stealing from hundis and cutting locks with an electrical cutter he had purchased specifically for this purpose. The DSP said that the accused admitted that he had planned to use the stolen money for a trip to Goa and had been saving it for that purpose. The accused confessed to four temple offenses under the Rajamahendravaram III Town Police Station limits and one under the Korukonda Police Station. Additionally, pending cases against him exist at Tuni, Payakaraopeta, and Narsipatnam police stations.
