One Beloved Cartoon's Video Game Revival Wouldn't Be Complete Without a LEGO Game

One Beloved Cartoon's Video Game Revival Wouldn't Be Complete Without a LEGO Game

Business Mayor06-05-2025

Ever since LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game , the LEGO brand has brought players on all sorts of adventures through some of the biggest IPs around. They have gotten to experience superhero tales through LEGO Marvel Superheroes and LEGO Batman , have explored the Wizarding World through the LEGO Harry Potter duology, were transported to a fantasy landscape through LEGO Lord of the Rings , and went on a massive IP-filled adventure with LEGO Dimensions . If there are LEGOs of it, the IP has likely been explored in a video game. And now, it feels like the perfect time to shed light on one more: SpongeBob SquarePants .
For years, SpongeBob SquarePants has been Nickelodeon's biggest IP, and it seems like that will not be changing anytime soon. Not only are there multiple spin-offs and films, but the series has also spawned all sorts of fun-filled video games. Recently, that seems to only be growing as titles such as SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl have put Bikini Bottom front and center. Because of that, it feels like a great time for LEGO to also take a stab at this world.

LEGO and SpongeBob Feel Made For Each Other
There Have Been So Many SpongeBob Games Recently
While SpongeBob SquarePants may have existed since 1999, it feels like there is currently a major resurgence for the IP within the video game space. This was kicked off in 2020 with the release of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated , which gave the 2003 classic a fresh coat of paint. That must have been a success because two years later, the studio returned with a brand-new adventure in the form of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake . Most recently, players have been treated to another platformer with SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game .
That makes three major platformers set within Bikini Bottom within the past five years. On top of that, the characters have also appeared in a slew of Nickelodeon crossover titles, with them often being the focal point. They have fought other Nick characters in two Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl s, raced against them in three Nickelodeon Kart Racers , and have appeared in countless mobile games. Couple that with the new movies and spin-off shows, and there seems to be no shortage of SpongeBob content. So, it feels like a great time for LEGO to capitalize on the brand.
LEGO is no stranger to SpongeBob as it once had an entire theme dedicated to the IP. These sets let players build iconic SpongeBob locations such as the Krusty Krab, Chum Bucket, and the houses of the three protagonists. Sadly, there have not been any new sets since 2012. However, that should not stop LEGO from delving even further into Bikini Bottom through a video game.
A LEGO SpongeBob game could lead to something truly special. If it tapped into the open-world framework of recent Traveller's Tales LEGO titles, players could be given free rein to explore everything Bikini Bottom has to offer. They could spend hours collecting thousands of studs, unlocking all sorts of unique characters, and saving the ocean from the likes of Plankton. Much like LEGO The Incredibles did with Pixar's catalog, it could even feature characters from across Nickelodeon's vast catalog.
As of now, there are no rumors of a LEGO SpongeBob game, nor does it seem likely to happen. Regardless, both brands could be perfect together.
