Duke freshman Kon Knueppel to take the 1-and-done route to the NBA draft
Duke's Kon Knueppel is heading to the NBA after one college season.
The 6-foot-7, 217-pound wing announced his decision Wednesday after a season that included him being named MVP of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament while helping the Blue Devils reach the Final Four. Knueppel averaged 14.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists as the team's No. 2 scorer behind Associated Press national player of the year Cooper Flagg.
'Forever a Blue Devil,' Knueppel posted on social media. 'Taking the Brotherhood with me to the next chapter. #NBADraft.'
Knueppel is the first member of Duke's touted freshman class to go pro. He's widely projected as a lottery pick.
'He's a guy that is really about competition,' Duke coach Jon Scheyer said in social-media video posted by the program Wednesday. 'He never shied away from the competitive plays that have to be made in order to win at a high level.'
Knueppel is an efficient, floor-spacing scorer who shot 47.9% from the field, 40.6% from 3-point range and 91.4% from the foul line. And while he typically played a wingman role to Flagg, he thrived in the forefront when Flagg was injured during the ACC Tournament, scoring 28 points against Georgia Tech, 17 against rival North Carolina and 18 against Louisville as the Blue Devils won a second title in Scheyer's three seasons.
Knueppel is only the eighth freshman to win MVP honors at the ACC Tournament.
The Milwaukee native closed with 16 points in a loss to Houston in the national semifinals. His free throw with 1:14 left marked Duke's final point as the Blue Devils faltered late with the Cougars rallying with the game's last nine points in the final 33 seconds.

Ravens' AFC North rivals have trouble brewing with their star pass rushers
Ravens' AFC North rivals have trouble brewing with their star pass rushers Ravens' AFC North rivals have trouble brewing with their star pass rushers One of the final gifts that Ozzie Newsome gave the Baltimore Ravens organization was the selection of Lamar Jackson. Let that sink in for a second. After serving his organization admirably for more than two decades, there wasn't anything more that he needed to prove. Still, he added the most talented quarterback this franchise has seen and then handed the keys to new GM Eric DeCosta. Ozzie has since settled into the role of Executive Vice President, a position he has held since 2019. Lamar has won two MVP trophies. DeCosta's approval rating is soaring. Things aren't going so well across the rest of the AFC North's landscape. No one is complaining. It just seems interesting. Nothing the Cleveland Browns or Cincinnati Bengals do surprises us anymore, but what the heck is going on in the Steel City? More bad news comes for the Steelers as the AFC North crumbles around the mighty Ravens Never will you ever hear The Flock toss sympathy in the Pittsburgh Steelers' direction, but what is happening over there? A once-pristine organization is beginning to remind everyone of... well... the Bengals and Browns. Pittsburgh is no longer the elite organization it once was. The fans want a new coach, and even though Mike Tomlin has never endured a losing season, people are tired of hearing that. The Steelers haven't won a postseason game since January 15, 2017, and Aaron Rodgers' addition doesn't seem to be evoking confidence. They've lost six straight in the playoffs, and now, to make matters worse, their best defender isn't happy. T.J. Watt reportedly won't be attending mandatory minicamp. No progress has been made on a possible extension. Do you see it now? News like this is expected from the Bengals and Browns. Cincinnati has ticked off Trey Hendrickson, and Germaine Pratt, finally released on June 9, has been asking to be traded since February. The Bengals still have yet to sign two of their draftees, Shemar Stewart and Demetrius Knight Jr. The Browns... Sheesh... What can be said about Cleveland that we haven't already said 200 times? Discussing the mess they've created for themselves would require another story and 700 more words. Here's where we'll end this. Life has been kind to Ravens fans and the Baltimore media. Just take a look at the culture they have established, and while you're at it, thank your lucky stars when you lie down tonight that you aren't a fan of one of their rivals.

Jonnu Smith no-show at Dolphins minicamp, Zach Sieler in attendance
The Miami Dolphins will seemingly close out the off-season program without one of the team's top players. Dolphins Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith — who led the Dolphins in receptions (88) last year and set franchise records for tight end productivity in receiving yards and touchdowns — was nowhere to be found Tuesday, seemingly skipping out on the mandatory team activity, which escalates concerns about his contract and future with the team. On the other hand, leading defensive tackle Zach Sieler, who has produced 20 sacks in the past two seasons and is a crucial component of the Dolphins' line, was in attendance, despite the fact he, too, has been in contract discussions with the team. 'We've been in communication, but I don't want to get into the personal details,' head coach Mike McDaniel said at Tuesday morning's press conference. 'We are focused on building the Dolphins today, and anything outside of that would be a distraction.' McDaniel did not confirm whether Smith would face the upwards of $105,000 fines for missing minicamp, although he did note that Jalen Ramsey's absence is excused. In the 2024 season, Smith emerged as a pivotal weapon in Miami's offense, setting franchise records for a tight end with 88 receptions, 884 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns. He was also the Dolphins' lone Pro Bowl selection last season. After this breakout year, Smith is reportedly looking for more — hoping to cash in and rework his two-year deal, which is worth $8.4 million. After all, he's a record-setting tight end and still doesn't rank among the 30 highest-paid at his position league-wide considering he'll make less than $4.1 million this season if his contract isn't addressed. 'A lot has been written and said about Jonnu over the past week or so,' Smith's agent Drew Rosenhaus said during his weekly segment on WSVN-7 prior to Tuesday morning's first mini camp practice. Notably, Rosenhaus additionally represents Sieler. 'I'll just say that right now Jonnu's situation is fluid. We are in discussions with the Dolphins, and I'm just going to leave it at that.' Evidently, the conversations continue, as the Dolphins and Steelers continue conversations about trading Smith to Pittsburgh, where he'd be reunited with his former offensive coordinator. As the Dolphins pinch pennies, they appeared to have a similar problem with Sieler, whom McDaniel said has attended every OTA day, but has skipped the on-field work for unclarified reasons. On and off the field, Sieler has been a cornerstone of the defense, recording 10 sacks for the second consecutive year and earning 2024 team MVP honors. Despite the ongoing conversations between the two parties and his visible absence from field work, Sieler was expected to participate in Tuesday's work. However, McDaniel couldn't specify how much he'd do. As both Sieler and Smith approach 30 years old — which is often seen as the twilight of an NFL career — they remain some of the league's biggest bargains. Sieler's $10.2 million average salary ranked 50th among defensive linemen when he extended his contract in 2023 through this season. 'My job is to react and control my controllables and make sure that people are moving in one direction appropriately,' McDaniel said of all the trading and contract negotiation rumors. 'And so the Business is business. The opportunity that business does provide in the off season is a rep to the team about handling noise— things that don't have to do with what you're actually there to do, and you should be focused on doing.'
