Puri, May 20 (PTI) The Jagannath temple administration in Odisha's Puri said the construction of three chariots for the next month's Rath Yatra is progressing well and lauded the work of carpenters engaged in the exercise.
SJTA chief administrative officer Arabinda Padheee said, 'One can see how the chariots are being made organically by many servitors and other stakeholders. This is literally the quintessential essence of the intangible heritage of the Jagannath culture. The entire process is progressing well.' He visited the 'Rath Khala', where the chariots are being constructed, near the Puri's titular king's palace.
On the occasion of the 'Bhaunri' festival, the 26 wheels of the three chariots are fitted with the wooden axle after a special 'puja'.
'Three chariots- Nandighosh of Lord Jagannath, Taladwaja of Lord Balabhadra and Darpa Dalan of Devi Subhadra stand separately on the Rath Khala,' said Bijay Mohapatra, the chief carpenter of Lord Jagannath's Nandighosh chariot.
The 'Bhaunri' festival also marks the end of the 'chandan' yatra of the Lord Jagannath.
This is a major festival in Puri for which the police have made adequate security arrangements, a senior SJTA officer said.

DGCA's whip on Uttarakhand operators: Suspends Kestrel Aviation ops after copter crash lands, to conduct live monitoring
After six people onboard a Kedarnath Dham-bound helicopter had a narrow escape when it made an emergency landing on a highway in Rudraprayag on June 7, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday suspended two operators, including Kestrel Aviation, for SOP violations. The DGCA has also decided to intensify safety supervision of helicopter operations in Uttarakhand, including conducting live monitoring and surprise audits, LiveMint has learned. According to a PTI report, the last one month alone has seen four crashes. A private helicopter had to make an emergency landing in Guptkashi of Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district due to a technical fault on Saturday. All the passengers on board the helicopter, en route to Kedarnath Dham, were safe. The helicopter belonged to Kestrel Aviation Private Limited. It made a precautionary landing on the road instead of a helipad. The DGCA said Kestrel Aviation's AW119 (Reg. VT-RNK) helicopter, piloted by Capt RPS Sodhi, experienced a hard landing on the road adjacent to the Barasu helipad. The hard landing of the helicopter on Saturday comes just about a month after another private helicopter on its way to Gangotri temple crashed near Gangnani in Uttarkashi district on May 8, killing six people including five women and the pilot, and leaving one male passenger seriously injured. On May 12, a helicopter returning from Badrinath to Sersi with pilgrims on board was forced to make an emergency landing due to poor visibility in a school playground in Ukhimath. All pilgrims were safe. The helicopter took off again after about an hour when the weather improved, PTI reported. On May 17, a heli ambulance from AIIMS Rishikesh crash-landed near the Kedarnath helipad in Uttarakhand due to damage to its rear part. Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 1 (PTI) Hundreds of devotees on Sunday thronged the famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala to witness Maha Kumbhabhishekam held at the shrine after 270 years. 'The rituals were performed by priests during the auspicious time between 7.40 am to 8.40 am on Sunday,' they said. The rituals began after Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma, the present head of the Travancore royal family, offered prayers at the shrine. In the presence of Varma and other royal family members, the tantri (head priest) first carried out the 'Ashtabandha Kalasam' at the Thiruvambady Temple. Later, the reinstallation of the Vishwaksena idol was held by 8.00 am, temple sources said. The Vishwaksena idol, renovated and reinstalled now, is about 300 years old and was built in 'katu sarkara yogam', a traditional method involving a unique combination of materials to create idols. The renovation had been carried out as per the directive of the Supreme Court-appointed expert panel in 2017. Though the work began soon after, it could not progress much further due to the COVID situation, they said.
