It's mating season now so be careful, Perhilitan tells Batu Pahat villagers after three crocodiles caught in past week
JOHOR BARU, May 12 – Wildlife officials have reportedly warned residents of Kampung Parit Gantong in Batu Pahat to remain alert during the current crocodile mating season, after three of the reptiles were captured in the area over the past week.
The Star quoted Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Aminuddin Jamin saying female crocodiles are particularly aggressive during this period as they come ashore to nest and guard their eggs.
'We believe that it is now the mating season for crocodiles. Normally, crocodiles will come up to the land near riverbanks to make their nest before laying their eggs.
'Female crocodiles are quite aggressive and protective of their eggs,' he reportedly said.
He also urged the public not to provoke the animals and to exercise caution, especially near riverbanks, as more crocodiles may appear as the mating season continues.
Aminuddin said the village's proximity to Sungai Batu Pahat, a known crocodile habitat, is a key factor in the sightings.
'The crocodile that was captured last Wednesday was found some 200m away from Sungai Batu Pahat. It was caught not far from its nest. We believe that it was protecting its eggs,' he added.
'Crocodile attacks on humans are rare in Johor but it does not mean that the people should take things lightly,' Aminuddin warned.
Residents, especially fishermen, were advised to stay vigilant while working near the river.
The first crocodile, weighing 400kg, was spotted last Wednesday and caught by firefighters with help from villagers; all three reptiles have since been relocated far from human settlements.
Perhilitan said it is closely monitoring the area around the village and other locations along Sungai Batu Pahat.
Those who spot a crocodile are encouraged to report the sighting immediately to the authorities, including Perhilitan.

KEPALA BATAS, June 21 — Police have arrested a man who fled in a vehicle with a 12-year-old special needs girl in Penaga yesterday. Seberang Perai Utara police chief ACP Anuar Abd Rahman said the incident occurred around 5.30 pm when the girl's mother had gone to her husband's workshop to deliver engine oil, leaving her daughter in the car with the engine still running. 'However, when the woman, who is in her 40s, returned to the vehicle, she discovered that both the car and her daughter were missing. She then used the Life360 location tracking app to locate her phone, which was with her daughter, and found it was in the Bagan Lalang area of Butterworth,' he said in a statement today. He said checks revealed that the suspect, who is in his 60s, has seven prior criminal records and 11 past drug-related cases. 'The victim is in good condition and did not sustain any injuries. She was taken to Kepala Batas Hospital for a medical examination,' he added. Anuar said that further investigations are ongoing. The case is being investigated under Sections 379A and 363 of the Penal Code. AGC denies ‘flawed prosecution' claims after Najib's DNAA in second SRC case, delays due to overlapping cases
KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has dismissed as baseless allegations that it carried out a 'flawed prosecution' in the second SRC International Sdn Bhd case involving Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. In a statement, the AGC reiterated its firm commitment to upholding the rule of law and stated that it would continue to fulfill its responsibilities under the Federal Constitution with integrity, fairness and respect for the judicial process. However, the AGC acknowledged the decision by High Court Judge K Muniandy to grant Najib a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on three charges of money laundering involving RM27 million in funds from the company. 'The case was registered in the High Court on Feb 7, 2019, and scheduled for trial on five occasions: June 2020, July to August 2021, March to April 2022, September 2024 and April to May 2025. 'However, all trial dates were postponed due to the Movement Control Order caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, requests by the defence, or applications by the prosecution itself,' the statement read. According to the statement, the prosecution's requests for postponement were due to the ongoing trial of the first SRC case, which proceeded at the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court until its completion on March 31, 2023. At the same time, the trial proceedings for the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case had also begun while the first SRC case was still ongoing. 'Both cases involved overlapping material documents required for the second SRC trial. 'As these documents were critical to the second SRC case, the prosecution had no choice but to wait until they were available, which was until the 1MDB trial proceedings were completed. 'It must be emphasised that the material documents are available but are currently being used as evidence in the ongoing 1MDB trial,' the AGC said. The AGC further stated that the prosecution had requested additional time to gather all relevant material documents to be presented as evidence in the second SRC trial. 'This delay was not intentional but was to ensure the integrity of the documents as evidence in the trial is preserved,' the statement read. Earlier today, Judge Muniandy, in granting Najib a DNAA on the three charges, stated that the case had been pending for six years since 2019, without any witness testimony being presented, having faced multiple postponements, which indicated that the prosecution was not ready to proceed with the trial. On Feb 3, 2019, Najib claimed trial to three charges of money laundering by accepting illegal proceeds amounting to RM27 million through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank Berhad, AmBank Group Building, Jalan Raja Chulan on July 8, 2014. The former Pekan MP was charged under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, which is punishable by a maximum fine of RM5 million or imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction. Najib is currently serving a jail term in Kajang Prison for the misappropriation of RM42 million in the SRC International funds case. Siblings of alleged abuse victim placed in grandparents' care, say Perlis authorities
KANGAR, June 21 — The elder brother and younger sister of an 11-year-old girl believed to have been abused by their biological parents are now under the care of their paternal grandparents, while the victim is still being treated at the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) here. Perlis Social Welfare Department (JKM) director Ku Chik Ku Mat Esa said the department would take steps to obtain an interim custody order and identify suitable family members to care for the children. If no suitable guardian is found, they will be placed under JKM's care. 'Perlis JKM has sent a counsellor to meet the victim's siblings, a 12-year-old brother and a one-year-old sister, who are now with their paternal grandparents and are in good condition,' he told reporters after the Perlis state government's monthly assembly, here today. Ku Chik said the 11-year-old girl is currently under the care of HTF Paediatric Unit, where doctors are treating her injuries and assessing her cognitive development. Meanwhile, he said the department would also be meeting other family members to assess their acceptance of the situation and any trauma they may be experiencing. On Thursday, Bernama reported that police detained a married couple at a house in Arau early yesterday morning on suspicion of abusing their 11-year-old biological daughter since 2023. The couple has been remanded for six days starting yesterday for further investigation. Arau district police chief Supt Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi was quoted as saying that the 37-year-old couple was arrested at 1.30 am after Perlis JKM received a complaint from a member of the public.
