Ipoh to host Malaysian Culinary World Cup 2025
IPOH: Several types of Malaysian heritage food will be presented during the second Malaysian Culinary World Cup 2025, to be held here in June.
Besides the food prepared for the competition, visitors to the three-day event from June 27 to June 29 will also have the opportunity to savour the delicacies.
Celebrity Chef Fazalina Ismail announced that dishes such as "Nasi Ayam", "Mee Goreng", and "Laksa" would be featured during the competition.
"Additionally, the National Archives Department will have a corner showcasing special traditional Perak food such as 'Bubur Anak Lebah', 'Nasi Lemuni', and 'Ikan Sungai Masak Tempoyak'," she said during a press conference held at Tandoor Grill Restaurant here on Tuesday (May 19).
Perak Deputy Speaker Jenny Choy Tsi Jen represented Perak tourism, industry, investment, and corridor development committee chairman Loh Sze Yee.
Also present was Malaysia Bersatu Culinary Association (MBCA) president Chef Arthur Lim. MBCA is organising the event.
Choy, reading out the speech on behalf of Loh, stated that the event is an international culinary competition being held for the second time.
She mentioned the first edition was organised in 2023 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur, where it earned recognition from the Guinness World Records as the world's largest culinary competition.
"The event returns for its second edition, this time to be held at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah in Ipoh, which will serve as the stage for showcasing talents in the culinary arts.
"To date, nearly 660 entries, comprising 500 local and 160 international participants, have been received.
"The competition will take place over three days, featuring 65 categories for both professional chefs and culinary students," she said, adding that among the 115 professional judges, 55 are from international countries.
Choy said there will also be categories for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), both for adults and children.
"In addition, there will be 80 booths selling local products throughout the three-day programme.
"Competitions like this serve to uncover the talents of both professional chefs and culinary students, enhancing quality and techniques in the culinary world to compete at an international level.
"Furthermore, hotel and tourism industry players often use such competitions as a platform to scout for new talents to join their organisations," she said, adding that admission to the event is free for visitors.
Lim said Ipoh has a lot to offer, and the event was held here to promote the city's and the state's tourist attractions.
"Usually such big events are organised in Kuala Lumpur or Penang.
"So this time we wanted to do something different and hold the event in Ipoh instead," he added.
Among the strategic partners supporting the event are the National Archives of Malaysia, Tourism Perak, Ipoh City Council, and the Perak State Development Corporation.

Malaysia's iconic superhero Keluang Man finally soars to the silver screen
This film tells the story of Borhan, a psychiatric patient in Kluang, who lives a double life as the mysterious vigilante Keluang Man. Photo: Keluang Man/Instagram After decades of nostalgia and years of anticipation, Keluang Man, Malaysia's original animated superhero, has finally made his live-action debut in cinemas nationwide. Released on May 29, the big-screen adaptation breathes new life into a local legend, blending action, humour and heartfelt storytelling in true Malaysian style. Directed by Anwari Ashraf, the man behind Polis Evo and Project: High Council , Keluang Man is not just another superhero flick. It's a tribute to Malaysian pop culture, a reinvention of an iconic character from the 1990s, and the start of the Astro Shaw Cinematic Universe (ASCU). This film tells the story of Borhan, played by Nas Muammar Zar, better known as Nas-T, a psychiatric patient in Kluang who lives a double life as the mysterious vigilante Keluang Man. Haunted by a voice in his head which is voiced by radio icon Halim Othman, Borhan finds himself pulled between delusions, memories and justice, especially when confronted with his estranged brother Shamsir, played by Datuk Remy Ishak. The story unfolds with a quirky cast of characters including Shweta Sekhon as Dr Malini, Borhan's psychiatrist, and Anwaar Beg Moghal as Inspector Sahab, her relentless brother who is hot on Keluang Man's trail. Datuk Rosyam Nor rounds out the cast as Ahmad, Borhan's aged but wise mentor. Speaking at the movie's gala premiere, lead actor Nas-T admitted that stepping into Borhan's complex world was both a challenge and a triumph. 'It's all thanks to director Anwari Ashraf, who wrote and directed it, and I entrusted everything to him. 'He moulded my character, and I followed his direction faithfully,' he said. In a particularly emotional twist, beloved radio host Halim returns not in body, but in voice. Lending his 1990s-era persona to a voice inside Borhan's head, Halim shared how surreal the experience was. 'Anwari told me about a superhero film with a character inspired by me, tied to the golden days of Roda Impian . 'I was touched by the director's imagination in wanting to capture Malaysia's memories from around 1998 to 2000,' Halim said. For Halim in particular, Keluang Man is considered a generational bridge that would bring people together. 'This isn't just a superhero film, it's a creative journey connecting nostalgia with a new generation,' he said. Shot in Kuala Lumpur, Kluang, Klang and Ipoh, Keluang Man took over two years to produce, with a reported budget of RM13 million. It represents the first full-fledged live-action adaptation of a local animated icon, originally created by the late Kamn Ismail. Director Anwari described the film as a love letter to fans and a vision of more local heroes to come. 'I hope audiences will embrace this film and help reignite the spirit of the superhero Keluang Man, so that his legacy can be passed down from one generation to the next,' he said. – Sinar Daily

Malaysian entrepreneur apologises for spending ‘only' RM1mil on daughter's 11th birthday
Farhana Zahra (left) also gave her 11-year-old daughter an Apple computer, a Rolex watch and a Toyota Vellfire multi-purpose vehicle. - Photos: Screengrabs from Farhanazahra91/ TikTok KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian entrepreneur has come under fire after revealing that she spent RM1 million to throw a lavish birthday for her 11-year-old daughter, and apologised for not spending more. Besides a celebration that featured balloons and cakes, Farhana Zahra, who runs a beauty and dietary supplement business, also gave her daughter extravagant gifts. Among them were an Apple computer, a Rolex watch, and a Toyota Vellfire multi-purpose vehicle. 'Forgive mama, this is all I could afford to give you. I only spent RM1 million for this birthday,' she posted in a June 3 TikTok video, which has since gone viral with over 2.2 million views. She also wished that her daughter's dream of becoming a businesswoman would come true. The video opens with her, her husband and three daughters all dressed in matching black outfits descending a grand staircase. They step onto a stage outside the house where they and the assembled guests sing Happy Birthday to her eldest daughter, whom she called Yaya, before the unveiling of the gifts. Farhana said Yaya's wishes are granted on an almost daily basis, leaving her unsure of what else to give the little girl, adding that she hoped the 'little gifts' would make her happy. The video and Farhana's use of the word 'only' to describe the amount she spent, did not go down well with netizens, who accused her of flaunting her wealth and trying to gain attention. 'Not to be rude, but trying very hard to show off,' a netizen with the handle Aiman said. Another netizen, Mono, said: 'That's not the right way to raise a daughter... I think you're overreacting and trying too hard.' Others noted the impracticality of the gifts, especially the car, as the girl is still too young to drive. '(I) need to know the logic of giving cars to a child... They can't even drive, no they're not even going to drive knowing they can afford (to hire) drivers,' said a netizen with the handle Njwa. In another follow-up video, Farhana also surprised her child's former driver with a luxury car as a token of appreciation. - The Straits Times/ANN
