UK holidaymakers can now use eGates at 14 major destinations

The opening of a raft of eGates at airports across Europe means less queues for British tourists this holiday season
Holidaymakers heading to popular destinations can breathe a sigh of relief with the news that a host of eGates have now officially opened in time for the summer season.
It should mean less queueing for Brits abroad, who, until now, have had to line up for manned immigration booths and have their documents stamped. Portugal announced the opening of their eGates at Faro Airport at the start of the month after the Prime Minister Keir Starmer struck a deal with EU leaders.

And now France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and eleven other EU countries have officially reopened fast-track eGates for British tourists. According to Travel and Tour World, passengers will now be able to breeze through 14 airports using the electronic system which will scan UK passports and replace the need for stamping them.

Exiting border control through these automated gates was something Brits could do before Brexit. After leaving, that access was restricted.
British travellers were then reclassified as "visa-exempt third-country nationals" and initially lost their ability to use e-gates at many European airports.
Until now, UK holidaymakers have only been able to use eGates at limited airports in Spain and Portugal. It's led to reports of 'nightmare' queues before peak summer season - July and August - has even arrived.
At Faro Airport, prior to the opening of the eGates, we reported on passengers waiting for three hours at the hub to have their passports stamped.
This week Sofia Airport in Bulgaria also opened for British fliers. And Tallinn Airport in Estonia has also relaxed the ban and will now allow Brits to use the gates.

The amendment to the eGate regulations now mean 49 destinations will allow Brits through their security system, the Sun said, with popular countries such as Paris, Rome, Lisbon and Tenerife on the list.
There had been fears that gates would not reopen for Brits before this summer with initial timescales set at October 2025 with the roll out taking place over six months from then.

British Airways flight crew mistakenly booked into sex dungeon for layover

Twelve members of British Airways staff were booked into the wrong hotel in Milan by bosses and were met with bondage cages, human dog cages and leather harnesses A British flight crew who had a stopover in Italy were accidentally booked into a pay-by-the-hour seedy sex dungeon, complete with vagina-shaped spa baths and mirrored ceilings. Twelve members of British Airways staff were supposed to be booked into the Motel in Milan, but were instead checked into the nearby Hotel, also in the Italian city, by bosses. The crew turned up and were met with bondage cages, human dog cages and leather harnesses, instead of the normal clean sheets and hotel toiletries. ‌ The airline workers were reportedly stepped down from their next flight, having not had enough sleep, after putting up with moans and groans from other patrons of the establishment. They were allowed to rest in a more suitable hotel before returning to their scheduled flights. ‌ A source told the Sun: "It was a comical mistake by the hotel booking team, but had serious implications. Some of the team who stayed in the sex dungeon didn't get any sleep, so they couldn't operate on BA services the following day. They were kept awake by thrillseekers moaning and groaning all day and night. 'Staff reported constant noise, and witnessed 'drug deals and prostitution', as well as a '24-hour orgy. There were adult workers outside propositioning staff. Crew even reported suspicious fluids in their rooms which made their skin crawl.' A British Airline spokeswoman said: 'A small number of crew were moved to unapproved hotel rooms due to availability issues with our usual provider, without our knowledge. We are urgently investigating to prevent a repeat.'

Travel warning for six countries where 'airspace could be closed'

The UK government has issued new advice for several countries that could be impacted by 'ongoing hostilities' between Israel and Iran. The fresh warning affects six countries including one that's a major holiday destination for UK travellers. Tourists have been warned they could face delays and cancellations to flights in Oman, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. In the update, which was posted to the countries' FCDO pages last night, the government warns that 'ongoing hostilities in the region and between Israel and Iran could escalate quickly and pose security risks for the wider region'. It adds: 'There is a possibility of travel disruption, including short-notice airspace closures, delayed and cancelled flights, and other unanticipated travel impacts. 'You should monitor local and international media for the latest information. Be vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities. 'Check with relevant airlines for the latest updates before travelling.' The UAE is a major tourist destination for the UK with more than one million Britons travelling to the Middle Eastern country in 2024. In the update, the government warns that 'ongoing hostilities in the region and between Israel and Iran could escalate quickly and pose security risks for the wider region'. Oman (pictured above) is under the warning While there is no warning against travelling to any of the six countries, Brits should check their flight details for the latest updates. The travel advice for Jordan, another popular holiday destination in the region, has not changed. The UK government advises against all travel to both Israel and Iran. Israel launched its assault on Iran - named Operation Rising Lion' - on Friday June 13. The IDF has targeted the country's nuclear sites and military bases. Iran has retaliated with drone attacks, one of which shut down the country's largest oil refinery in Haifa. Donald Trump has said he will decide whether the US will get involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran within the next two weeks. and Germany are set to meet with the Iranian foreign minister today in Geneva in a search for a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
