CO2 engineers of deep sea: Cod, eel save environment by storing carbon in ocean
New research reveals that many of the fish species we eat are vital to maintaining the seabed — and by extension, the climate.
Experts at the Convex Seascape Survey analyzed the role of fish in bioturbation, which is the stirring and reworking of sediments in the shallow seas around the UK and globally. The results also underscore the ecological importance of species like the Atlantic cod, Atlantic hagfish, and European eel, which were the region's highest-ranked 'ecosystem engineers'.
Altogether, the researchers identified 185 fish species contributing to bioturbation, 120 targeted by commercial fisheries.
'Ocean sediments are the world's largest reservoir of organic carbon – so what happens on the seabed matters for our climate,' said University of Exeter PhD student Mara Fischer, who led the study.
'Bioturbation is very important for how the seabed takes up and stores organic carbon, so the process is vital to our understanding of how the ocean absorbs greenhouse gases to slow the rate of climate change.
'Bioturbation is also important for seabed and wider ocean ecosystems. We have a good understanding of how invertebrates contribute to global bioturbation – but until now, we have been missing half the story. Our study is the first to attempt to quantify the bioturbation impact of fish, and it shows they play a significant, widespread role.'
Co-author Callum Roberts said, 'We also found that species with the highest bioturbation impacts are among the most vulnerable to threats such as commercial fishing."
'Many of the largest and most powerful diggers and disturbers of seabed sediments, like giant skates, halibut and cod, have been so overfished they have all but vanished from our seas. These losses translate into big, but still uncertain, changes in the way seabed ecosystems work.'
The study analyzed records of all fish species living on the UK continental shelf. Researchers found that over half contribute to bioturbation through various behaviors, including foraging, burrowing, and nest building. To calculate each species' bioturbation impact score, the team considered the different ways fish rework sediment, the size of the fish, and the frequency of these activities.
Among the key species identified was the European eel, which burrows into sediment and earned a bioturbation score of 100 out of 125. Critically endangered and primarily caught using traps and fyke nets, the European eel faces climate change, disease, habitat loss, pollution, and fishing threats.
Similarly, the Atlantic cod, a vertical excavator with a bioturbation score 100, is classified as vulnerable. Popularly consumed in dishes like fish and chips, cod populations have declined sharply in regions like the North Sea.
The Convex Seascape Survey, a collaboration between the Blue Marine Foundation, the University of Exeter, and Convex Group Limited, represents the most ambitious effort yet to deepen scientific understanding of the ocean's role in the Earth's carbon cycle.
'Anyone who has spent time underwater, whether snorkelling or diving, knows that fish are constantly digging up the seabed," said author Julie Hawkins.
'It's hard to believe that such an obvious and important activity has been largely overlooked when it comes to understanding ocean carbon burial.'
The study has been published in Marine Environmental Research.

In the induction phase, glucocorticoids are typically used to reduce tumor burden by clearing leukemic cells from the bone marrow. However, point mutations in the NR3C1 gene generally cause resistance to glucocorticoid therapy, which can significantly affect prognosis. Mutations in the CREBBP gene also cause resistance to glucocorticoids DHFR , FPGS , and TYMS genes have been shown to generally cause resistance to methotrexate, not glucocorticoids. Learn more about corticosteroids in B-ALL. In risk stratification for B-ALL, the NCCN notes that having a white blood cell count of > 30 x 109/L is considered a high-risk feature. This is consistent with European guidelines. The NCCN also states that age over 35 years is another high-risk feature for B-ALL. ETP phenotype is a high-risk feature for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia rather than the B-ALL subtype. Hyperdiploidy (a molecular subtype of B-ALL with 51-65 chromosomes) is considered standard risk by the NCCN; data have shown better prognosis for pediatric patients with this subtype. Learn more about risk stratification for B-ALL. TKIs are an important component of induction, consolidation, and maintenance treatment for Ph+ B-ALL. They are recommended by the NCCN for use in conjunction with other drugs, such as corticosteroids, blinatumomab, and inotuzumab ozogamicin (depending on treatment phase and disease severity) and as a treatment post-HCT. They recommend continuing TKI therapy for at least 2 years after HCT, although they note that the 'optimal duration' is unknown for this population. A recent review, however, notes that despite their success in patients with Ph+ B-ALL, approximately 25% of cases will develop resistance to TKIs. Given this possibility, the NCCN notes that clinicians should consider prior TKI intolerance, dose used, BCR::ABL1 mutations, and disease-related features when choosing a specific TKI; they specifically recommend bosutinib, dasatinib, imatinib, nilotinib, or ponatinib as options for TKI therapy. The DUX4-rearranged subtype of B-ALL is considered to have a favorable prognosis in adolescents and young adults, compared with MEF2D-rearranged, CDX2/UBTF, and IDH1/2; these subtypes generally have inferior prognosis in the same populations (although MEF2D-rearranged has intermediate prognosis in adults). Specifically, DUX4-rearranged B-ALL has been associated with 93% event-free survival and overall survival in pediatric patients, and adolescent and young-adult patients also see longer disease-free survival after complete remission is achieved. Several genetic subtypes of B-ALL are associated with varying prognoses, and the outcomes differences seen between pediatric and adult patients can be partly explained by the different subtypes expressed by these populations. Further, new therapies have enabled high survival rates among pediatric patients with B-ALL, with long-term survival of up to 90% in this population. Prognosis for B-ALL in adolescents and adults is comparatively poor. For example, a population-based study reported the following declining survival rates with age: 74% for patients 15-19 years old, 59% for patients 20-39 years old, and 43% for those 40-59 years old. Europe prepares to land rover on the Moon for first time
The first European Moon rover is due to land on the lunar surface on Thursday. Named Tenacious, the rover is less than 2ft long and can carry a payload of just over one pound. Built by the European arm of Japanese lunar exploration company Ispace, it will be controlled by ground staff in Luxembourg, who will be able to drive it at up to four inches per second in near real time, using a video camera mounted on its front panel. Once on the Moon, it will deliver an art project called Moonhouse, a 3in-high model of a typical red Swedish cottage, developed by Mikael Genberg, a Swedish artist. The team hopes to place the house in a location where it can be photographed with the Earth in the background. The rover is also carrying a shovel to collect lunar regolith – moon dust – which will be sold to Nasa for $5,000 (£3,685) under an agreement that will make history as the first off-planet sale of resources. It is the second attempt to land on the Moon by Ispace, after the company's first craft crash-landed on the lunar surface in 2020. An investigation later found that a software glitch had led the spacecraft to believe it was on the surface when it was still several miles from landing. Takeshi Hakamada, the founder of Ispace, said: 'Just over two years ago, Ispace became the first private company in the world to attempt a lunar landing. 'While the mission achieved significant results, we lost communication with the lander just before touchdown. 'Since that time, we have drawn on the experience, using it as motivation to move forward with resolve. We are now at the dawn of our next attempt to make history.' The rover is being carried in a lander spacecraft called Resilience which launched in January on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and entered lunar orbit on May 6. It is due to land on the Mare Frigoris region of the northern hemisphere of the near side of the Moon at 19:17 BST. The team is hoping that the area will be flat enough to allow the rover to trundle around, although its sturdy wheels should help it navigate unexpectedly rough terrain. Sophia Casanova, a senior lunar scientist at Ispace, said: 'The mission will be going to a really exciting region on the Moon. We are hoping to encounter a range of really interesting geologic features, and in particular with our Tenacious rover we will be exploring the lunar regolith, which is the soil-like material that covers the lunar surface. 'Understanding the characteristics of this material will help us not only understand the geology of the Moon but also help us understand the design of our future rovers.' She added: 'The Tenacious rover may encounter an array of features that may pose a hazard. Things like steep slopes, highly fluffy or compacted material, or small craters and boulders. However, these features represent really important characteristics for us to evaluate and our rover was designed with these operational conditions in mind.' The lander is also carrying several payloads including a water electrolyser for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen atoms, as well as experiments looking at food production and space radiation. Kathryn Hadler, the director of the European Space Resources Innovation Centre, said: 'There are many resources of interest on the Moon, we can use the oxygen and metals present on the dust that coats the surface of the Moon, and we are also interested in the water ice that is present in the permanently shadowed reasons. 'This is important because we can use these resources to support human life, we can use it for rocket propellant, and this will allow us to support a future of sustainable space exploration. 'We need to develop the technologies to allow us to use these resources in space. It will allow us to understand how the regolith behaves when it is scooped and handled. And this is critical to develop technology for future space missions.'
