Brazil's ex-leader Jair Bolsonaro rallies supporters in Sao Paulo to protest his Supreme Court trial
Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday (June 30, 2025) attended a public demonstration in Sao Paulo to protest against his ongoing Supreme Court trial in the South American country.
A couple of thousand people gathered on Paulista Avenue, one of the city's main locations, in a demonstration that Mr. Bolsonaro, before the event, called 'an act for freedom, for justice".
Mr. Bolsonaro and 33 allies are facing trial over an alleged plot to overturn the 2022 Presidential election results and remain in power. They were charged with five counts related to the plan.
The former President has denied the allegations and claims that he's the target of political persecution. He could face up to 12 years in prison if convicted.
'Bolsonaro, come back!' protesters chanted, but the former president is barred from running for office until 2030.
Brazil's Superior Electoral Court ruled last year that he abused his political power and made baseless claims about the country's electronic voting system.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Argentina this week comes at a particularly significant time as the South American nation is undertaking major economic reforms somewhat similar to those India went through in the past, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Monday. PM Modi will travel to Argentina on an official visit from July 4-5, at the invitation of country's President Javier Milei. This would be the third leg of his five-nation visit, following visits to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) starting July 2 and before Brazil (July 5-8) and Namibia (July 9). PM Modi has travelled earlier to Argentina for a G20 meeting in 2018, but this will be the first bilateral visit by an Indian PM in the last 57 years and therefore remains historic. As part of the programme, the Prime Minister would start the visit by paying respects at the statue of General Jose de San Martín, Argentina's revered freedom fighter and national hero. The Prime Minister will then be accorded a ceremonial welcome and have delegation-level talks, followed by a lunch hosted by President Milei in honour of the PM. Argentina is a strategic partner of India since 2019 and the two countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations last year. According to the MEA, both leaders will discuss subjects of economic and trade interest to further strengthen bilateral relations. "India's advancements in defence manufacturing, in the space sector, in new areas such as information technology and DPI can offer valuable expertise and we can share experiences with Argentina. Our expertise in Telemedicine and Digital healthcare solutions are also an offer for Argentina in expanding access to medical services and improving overall quality and cost-effective healthcare delivery," said MEA Secretary (East) P. Kumaran while addressing a special media briefing ahead of the PM's visit. Both leaders are scheduled to review ongoing cooperation and discuss ways to further enhance India-Argentina partnership in key areas including defence, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade and investment, and people-to-people ties. India and Argentina have significantly advanced bilateral cooperation in the mineral resources sector, particularly in lithium — a critical input for India's green energy transition. An MOU on cooperation in the field of mineral resources was signed in August 2022 between India and Argentina. The first meeting of the Joint Working Group under the MOU was held in January 2025. "Argentina holds the world's second largest shale gas reserves and the fourth largest shale oil reserves along with of course substantial conventional oil and gas deposits, making it a potentially important energy partner for India in the future. Argentina's rich reserves of critical minerals such as lithium, copper and other rare earth elements complement India's growing need for secure and sustainable supplies to these elements for its clean energy transition and industrial growth. India's public sector, KABIL, has already won a few concessions in Argentina since 2024. Our leaders will be discussing more on this subject," Kumaran added. Quite significantly, India-Argentina bilateral trade more than doubled in three years from 2019 to 2022, peaking at USD 6.4 billion in 2022. In 2021 and 2022, India was Argentina's fourth largest trading partner. Argentina is one of the prime suppliers of edible oils – soybean and sunflower – to India. In 2024, total annual bilateral trade between India and Argentina rose by 33 per cent to USD 5.23 billion, positioning India as Argentina's fifth-largest trading partner and export destination.

Women's safety a priority of governance: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta
New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday said that her government has made women's safety a priority of governance, and work is in progress to eliminate unsafe and dark spots in the city. In a post on X, the Chief Minister said, 'We have made women's safety in the capital not just a promise but a priority of governance. Continuous efforts are being made in coordination with the police and administration to make Delhi safer for women.' She said, 'Dark spots are being identified and security measures are being strengthened there, PCR patrolling has been increased, panic buttons and women's PCR facilities in public transport have been empowered, and effective mechanisms like 'One Stop Centres' are working to provide immediate assistance to women. Our goal is- a safe Delhi.' CM Gupta also highlighted the work being done by her government on fighting air pollution and ensuring the execution of court orders to stop the sale of fuel to end-of-life (EoL) vehicles. "Considering Delhi's pollution, the Hon'ble Supreme Court and pollution control bodies like CAQM, etc, are continuously stressing the seriousness of this matter and saying that end-of-life vehicles should be stopped — meaning such vehicles should not be given petrol or diesel. This matter is under constant discussion, and as per the court's directions, we want to implement the measures." The entire process is dependent on cameras, and we are studying its viability. 'The government is working to ensure minimal inconvenience is caused,' she said. Starting Tuesday, the Delhi government is planning to stop the sale of petrol and diesel to end-of-life (EoL) or over-age vehicles – a move aimed at fighting vehicular emission-linked air pollution in the Capital, an official said. Petrol pump owners on Monday confirmed that Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other devices linked to the transport ministry's data bank have been installed at their outlets to identify EoL vehicles. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has issued a direction that all EoL vehicles identified through ANPR cameras or other such devices installed at filling stations shall be denied fuel from July 1 in the NCT of Delhi. The transport department has defined EoL vehicles as those which are no longer validly registered vehicles, whether running on petrol, CNG or diesel. These also include petrol vehicles more than 15 years old and diesel vehicles more than 10 years old.

Brics summit to discuss trade in local currencies, terrorism, and AI
The annual BRICS Summit, to be held in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro on 6 and 7 July, could deliberate on the issue of carrying out trade settlements in national currencies, a senior Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official said here on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the BRICS Summit in the Brazilian city as part of his five-nation tour from 2 to 9 July. The other countries the Prime Minister is visiting are Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and Namibia. India will be the grouping's chair for the next year. On the proposed discussions on settling trade in national currencies, Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the MEA, told a media briefing: 'Countries in the Global South are also looking at alternatives. It is not a de-dollarisation issue. Countries are also doing trade settlements in national currencies. This has been going on for quite some time.' Ravi said BRICS is bringing some understanding of how important it is to have alternative mechanisms to do trade and projects in national currencies. 'It is a process and we are confident that it will get traction in days to come,' he said. Ravi said the BRICS leaders' declaration is set to forcefully denounce the Pahalgam terror attack and call for a firm approach to unitedly confront terrorism in line with India's expectations. 'There is also a broader understanding on how to deal with this menace of terrorism and no one should be spared in dealing with it. I think that is very well captured. When you get the declaration, you will see the language is much to our satisfaction,' Ravi added. The BRICS declaration is also expected to feature a reference to the Iran-Israel conflict. Ravi said four concrete 'deliverables' are expected from the BRICS Summit, which include global governance and artificial intelligence, a framework declaration on climate finance, and a partnership for the elimination of socially determined diseases. Asked about Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin deciding to skip the summit, Ravi said it will be a key forum for India to continue to push for the interests of the Global South. Apart from the PM, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will also visit Brazil as part of her six-day official visit to Spain and Portugal from 30 June to 5 July. The Finance Minister will attend the fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4), organised by the United Nations, and deliver a statement on behalf of India, according to a statement by the finance ministry. Sitharaman will meet senior ministers from Germany, Peru and New Zealand, and the President of the European Investment Bank, on the sidelines of the conference. She will also participate in and deliver a keynote address at the International Business Forum Leadership Summit on 'From FFD4 Outcome to Implementation: Unlocking the Potential of Private Capital for Sustainable Development', in Seville, Spain. Sitharaman will address the 10th Annual Meeting of the New Development Bank (NDB) as India's Governor and also attend the BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting (FMCBG) in Rio de Janeiro. She will deliver an address during the NDB Flagship Governors Seminar on 'Building a Premier Multilateral Development Bank for the Global South' and hold bilateral meetings with her counterparts from Brazil, China, Indonesia and Russia on the sidelines. As part of her visit to Lisbon, Portugal, the Finance Minister is expected to have a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Finance, Portugal. She will also interact with prominent investors and members of the Indian diaspora. BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia joining in 2025. BRICS now brings together 11 major emerging economies of the world, representing around 49.5 per cent of the global population, around 40 per cent of global GDP, and around 26 per cent of global trade. PM's Argentina visit key to critical minerals, shale energy partnership The Prime Minister's visit to Argentina will be important for India's efforts to import critical minerals. Officials said Argentina is a part of the Lithium Triangle, which comprises Argentina, Chile and Bolivia. 'We are talking to all three of them,' the official said, adding that India is also in talks with Peru and Bolivia to try and acquire mining concessions that hold lithium, molybdenum, and other critical minerals useful for India's green transition and advanced manufacturing. Argentina also holds the world's second-largest shale gas reserves and the fourth-largest shale oil reserves, along with substantial conventional oil and gas deposits, making it a potentially important energy partner for India in the future, officials said. The Prime Minister's visits to Namibia and Ghana and his interactions at the BRICS Summit could also focus on finding ways to establish bilateral mechanisms for partnering with multiple countries to harness critical minerals — both in terms of extraction processes and securing access to such minerals globally, officials said. They added that India has made good progress in this respect in Argentina, and Africa is rich in such resources. New Delhi will need to be much more focused in tapping this resource base in Africa. The Prime Minister's visits to both Ghana and Namibia become very important in this context, officials said. At the Prime Minister's meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília, the two leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen and diversify bilateral trade, including through the expansion of the India–MERCOSUR PTA, as Brazil will hold the chairship of MERCOSUR from 1 July 2025.
