Odisha Police
on Friday placed the tourist destination Puri and the
Jagannath Temple
under unprecedented security cover. Armed police personnel took positions around the 12th-century shrine, which attracts lakhs of pilgrims annually and is considered among the potential high-risk targets in the country.
On Tuesday, the
National Security Guard
(NSG) conducted a comprehensive security inspection at the iconic Jagannath Temple. The security audit focused particularly on anti-terror measures and crowd management during major festivals, including Rath Yatra, scheduled to be celebrated on 27 June. At least 240 police personnel have been deployed in and around the temple.
Recently, the Odisha government accelerated the process of appointing officers for the newly raised Swatantra Shree Mandir Surakshya Vahini (SSMSV) at the Jagannath Temple.

The SSMSV comprises 1,083 armed personnel, including 720 sepoys and 240 havildars, along with other ranked officers.
The SSMSV will coordinate with the National Security Guard for regular anti-terror drills. Their responsibilities include managing crises, contingencies, and unexpected situations arising from terrorism, extremism, and hostage scenarios targeting the Jagannath Temple.
"We are on full alert mode.
Proper checking and frisking of devotees are being carried out. We urge them to cooperate with the police during this emergency situation. Anti-sabotage personnel are conducting regular checks around the temple. Security teams are continuously monitoring CCTV footage at the command centre," Puri SP, Vinit Agrawal, said.
For tourist safety, police authorities have intensified inspections at hotels and accommodation facilities near the beach. Hotel operators have been advised to notify the police about suspicious guests and have been instructed to properly verify guests' identification documents. Security checkpoints have been established at Puri's entry and exit points for thorough vehicle inspections.
"Patrolling has been intensified along the Puri coastline, and marine fishing communities are alerted to keep a hawk's eye on vessels," a police official said.

'When we asked why we were being held, one officer just said: 'We cannot tell you,'" the man claimed, adding, 'No reason, no documentation, no violation — just a vague statement and dismissive attitude." He said they were detained for over 12 hours in a locked room with no access to proper food, clean water, or a sanitary bathroom. 'It was like a prison," he wrote, adding that efforts to contact the UAE or Pakistani embassies were met with hostility. 'They tried to snatch our phones when they saw me trying to call the embassy." The man also shared that he holds a senior position in Abu Dhabi, has no criminal record, and possesses a strong travel history. 'We were not misbehaving. Our paperwork was complete. Still, we were treated like criminals," he wrote. 'The loss isn't just financial," he continued, referring to expenses on flights, accommodation, insurance, and rental cars, adding, 'It's the psychological toll — the humiliation, the anxiety, and the sheer helplessness." He concluded his post by calling out the officers' behaviour as 'rude, racist, and unjust," saying, 'We feel dehumanised. We will never forget this." FTA sealed, UK's top diplomat in India on Saturday to prep for PM Starmer visit
NEW DELHI:UK foreign secretary David Lammy will visit India on Saturday to review bilateral relations, especially trade and strategic ties, with his counterpart S Jaishankar a month after the two countries finalised a free trade agreement (FTA). Lammy's trip will prepare the ground for a planned visit by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is expected to be in India in the near future for the formal signing of the FTA, people familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity. Shortly after his arrival in New Delhi on Saturday morning for the visit, Lammy will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will then hold talks with Jaishankar to review the bilateral relationship. Lammy will also meet commerce minister Piyush Goyal late on Saturday before departing early on Sunday morning. On May 6, India and the UK clinched the FTA that is expected to boost Indian exports of textiles, leather and engineering goods and cut levies on British whisky, automobiles and medical devices. The deal between the world's fifth and sixth largest economies was finalised three years after Modi and his former British counterpart Boris Johnson set a target of concluding the FTA by October 2022. India and the UK are currently engaged in the legal scrubbing of the text of the FTA, a process that is expected to take about three months, the people said. Once this process is completed, it will pave the way for a visit by Starmer for the formal signing of the trade deal, the people said. Hours after India and the UK announced the finalisation of the trade deal, India launched targeted military strikes on terrorist infrastructure in territories controlled by Pakistan on May 7 in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22. Lammy was among the world leaders who were engaged in efforts to reduce tensions between India and Pakistan before they halted military operations through an understanding on May 10. He was in frequent contact with the Indian government and spoke to Jaishankar on May 15. Lammy made a two-day visit to Islamabad from May 16 and welcomed the truce between India and Pakistan. He also asserted the importance of continued stability for the region. The hostilities had concerned the UK government as Britain has sizeable Indian and Pakistani diasporas. 'Ever since the horrendous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the UK has done all it can to play a supportive role to reduce tensions, get to a ceasefire and condemn terrorism,' Lammy said while in Islamabad. He described India and Pakistan as 'great friends to the UK' and said the UK is 'determined to play our part to counter terrorism and ensure this fragile ceasefire becomes a durable peace'. Ahead of Lammy's visit to New Delhi, India and the UK held their annual foreign office consultations and the first Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue on June 3. These discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, defence, counter-terrorism, green energy and health and measures to address export controls for enabling greater technology cooperation in strategic sectors.

However, a UAE resident recently shared a harrowing experience at Georgia's Kutaisi Airport on Reddit. The traveller, a Pakistani national with UAE residency, had planned a short vacation to Georgia, assuming his documents would suffice. Instead, he and his friend were denied entry, detained in a "prison-like" room, and allegedly humiliated by airport authorities, despite having valid papers. In a Reddit post warning other Pakistanis not to visit Georgia, the user opened up about his ordeal at Georgia's Kutaisi airport. He shared that he and his friend flew from Abu Dhabi to Kutaisi, Georgia, on Wizz Air. They had a valid UAE residency, hotel bookings, return flights, travel insurance and all required documents. However, things took a turn for the worse after he and his friend were pulled aside by immigration officials after hearing that they were from Pakistan. "If you are a Pakistani National with UAE residency, I warn you to not waste your money and face the humiliation we faced at Kutaisi airport," the user wrote in the Reddit post. "We told them we are UAE residents and Pakistani nationals. The man said that he and his friend were taken into a room where officials refused to answer their questions. Instead, they were treated with disdain and asked to stand in a corner. After 20 minutes, a woman entered the room and told them they would not be allowed to enter the country. When they asked why, she simply said, "we cannot tell you". "No reason. No proof. No violation. Just a vague statement," the user wrote. "We requested clarification, even politely asked for some justification. They kept refusing and misbehaving like we are some criminals," he added. The Redditor clarified that he and his friend were not misbehaving or missing any paperwork. "We were detained for over 12+ hours, locked in a prison-like room with no access to food or proper water. The bathroom was filthy," he revealed. Further, the man claimed that he works at a senior position in Abu Dhabi, has a good travel history and no criminal record. He accused the airport authorities of misbehaving with him. "They were super rude and even tried to snatch our phones when they got to know I am trying to call UAE embassy or Pakistan embassy," he wrote. The man said that his loss was not just financial. "We lost the money spent on flights, hotels, insurance, car rental... but that's nothing compared to the mental distress, anxiety, and psychological damage we experienced," he said. "The officers were rude, racist, and unjust, plain and simple," the man wrote. "We feel humiliated. We feel angry. We feel dehumanized. And we'll never forget this experience," he added. Since being shared, the post has gone viral. In the comments section, users shared similar experiences in Georgia. "I'm Nigerian and this happened to me and my friend in 2023, it was horrible experience. Even when I travel to other countries I have PTSD of possible refusal of entry even with complete documentation. I felt if it happened in Georgia, it will happen in another country. The experience was horrible," wrote one user. "They target many Indians too... very risky to go to Georgia due to that reason, best to avoid it fr," commented another. "You're not the first unfortunately. Georgia became notoriously bad against South Asians. As a Pakistani, you're far better visiting neighboring Azerbaijan," suggested a third user.
