Sweden seizes vessel suspected of 'sabotage' after undersea data cable rupture in Baltic Sea
RIGA, Latvia, Jan 27, (AP): Swedish prosecutors announced Sunday night that they have opened a preliminary investigation into suspected aggravated "sabotage' and ordered the detention of a vessel in the Baltic Sea suspected of damaging an underwater fiber optic cable connecting Latvia and the Swedish island of Gotland earlier that day.
"Several authorities, including the National Police Operations Department, the Coast Guard and the Armed Forces, are involved in the investigation,' said Mats Ljungqvist, senior prosecutor at the National Security Unit, according to a press release. The Swedish Coast Guard confirmed to the newspaper Expressen that they were on site near the vessel which the paper identified as the Malta-flagged Vezhen, at anchor near the port of Karlskrona.
"We are directly on site with the seized ship and are taking measures as decided by the prosecutor,' said Mattias Lindholm, spokesperson for the Coast Guard. According to data from Vesselfinder, the vessel departed from the Russian port of Ust-Luga several days earlier and was navigating between Gotland and Latvia at the time the damage was suspected of having occurred.
Latvia's state-run radio and TV center said Sunday that it recorded disruptions in data transmission on the cable running from the town of Ventspils to the Swedish island of Gotland, and concluded there was a rupture. The media organization said it was able to operate using other data transmission routes, while it was taking steps to have the cable repaired.
"At the moment, there is reason to believe that the cable is significantly damaged and that the damage is caused by external influences,' Vineta Sprugaine, head of corporate communications at LVRTC, was quoted as saying by the LSM state broadcaster. Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa wrote on X that her government was "working together with our Swedish Allies and NATO on investigating the incident, including to patrolling the area, as well as inspecting the vessels that were in the area.'
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on X that at least one cable belonging to a "Latvian entity' was believed to have been damaged and that he has been "in close contact' with Siliņa during the day Sunday. Sunday's rupture follows a string of incidents that have heightened fears of Russian sabotage and spying in the strategic region.

On June 12 Russia celebrates its national holiday. Historically, this day marks the adoption exactly 35 years ago of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. It was the official name under which Russia was known in the Soviet period of its being. Our country's continuous history, however, spans more than a millennium. Modern Russia is the successor to Ancient Rus' (also known as Kievan Rus), the Tsardom of Moscow, the Russian Empire, and finally the Soviet Union. Stretching for thousands of kilometers from the Baltic Sea in Europe to the Pacific Ocean in the Asian Far East, Russia represents a unique and distinctive civilization with its own rich traditions. The Russian culture is an integral part of the global cultural heritage. It is impossible to imagine world literature without the works of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, or music without the creations of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. Throughout its history, Russia has faced uncountable challenges and harsh trials. Numerous foreign invaders – from Genghis Khan's Asian hordes in the early Middle Ages to the European conquerors such as Napoleon and Hitler in 19th and 20th centuries – have tried to subdue it. However, our country not only withstood these onslaughts but also helped other subjugated peoples to break free. The Soviet Union's contribution to the liberation of the peoples of Asia, Africa, and Latin America from Western European colonialism is also widely recognized. In light of recent geopolitical transformations, the collective West, which is undergoing a systemic crisis, does not shy away from using all means to pressure those who refuse to submit to its dictate. Economic sanctions, political pressure and threats of force are being employed. In such conditions, Russia is standing up to Western hegemonism, which is seeking to isolate our country and inflict on it a strategic defeat. Together with our like-minded partners, we are advocating for a new, just and multipolar world order, based on true equality without dictate or double standards. The West-promoted concept of the so-called rules-based international order does not serve the interests of the global majority. As for the Arab world, Russia has always aspired to build friendly relations based upon mutual respect and consideration of common interests. This fully applies to Kuwait. Our first bilateral contacts date back to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when Russian warships began visiting Kuwait during the rule of the legendary Emir Mubarak the Great. Diplomatic relations with the USSR were established in 1963 with Kuwait being the first of the Gulf nations on this track. We pay due respect to the wise and consistent policy of the Kuwaiti leadership. It always stays focused on promoting national interests while striving to maintain balanced relations with the major global players. Hence, our bilateral relations have withstood the test of time and are not affected by the changing international political climate. It is important to note that during the Iraqi aggression of 1990–1991 our country firmly supported Kuwait politically and diplomatically. In those days, masterpieces of Islamic art from the Kuwaiti collections were protected in the largest Russian museum, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, where they had been displayed just before the aggression within the framework of an exhibition exchange. Politically, our countries maintain regular dialogue. Just in 2024, Russian and Kuwaiti foreign ministers met twice – in New York in July and in October in Moscow. More contacts are to follow. In September, the Russian city of Sochi will host the eighth regular ministerial round of the Russia-GCC Strategic Dialogue, with Kuwait currently presiding in the Gulf Cooperation Council. In October, the first-ever Russia-Arab summit is scheduled to convene in Moscow. Economically, our countries, being major oil producers and exporters, closely cooperate within the OPEC+ format to maintain stability in the global oil markets. There are shared interests in other areas. For instance, shipments of high-quality Russian agricultural products to Kuwait are growing year after year. Tourism has recently become another important area of bilateral cooperation. Nowadays, Russia is one of the most popular new destinations for GCC tourists. In 2024, fifteen thousand Kuwaitis visited our country, double the figure of the previous year. They are attracted by Russia's rich cultural and historical heritage, picturesque nature, well-developed infrastructure, safety and security, and simplicity of obtaining electronic entry visas. Easy transport access plays an important role as well. In addition to existing direct Jazeera Airways flights from Kuwait City to Moscow, a new route to Sochi—a famous Russian resort on the Black Sea — will be added this month. Cultural ties complement existing cooperation in the tourism and humanitarian fields. Last September Kuwaiti Culture Week in Moscow was held successfully.

Israeli forces seize Gaza aid boat, kidnap activists on board
JERUSALEM: Israeli naval forces boarded and seized a charity vessel carrying Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, which had tried to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip on Monday, and kidnapped the activists on board. The British-flagged yacht, Madleen, which is operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition, hadaimed to deliver a symbolic amount of aid to Gaza later on Monday and raise international awareness of the humanitarian crisis there. "If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by Israeli occupational forces or forces that support Israel," Thunberg, 22, said in a video released by the FCC, filmed before the vessel was captured. "I urge all my friends, family and comrades to put pressure on the Swedish government to release me and the others as soon as possible." The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that the vessel was under Israeli control. "The 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way to the shores of Israel. The passengers are expected to return to their home countries," the ministry wrote on X. Rima Hassan, a French member of the European parliament who was also on board, posted on X that the crew had been "kidnapped by the Israeli army in international waters around 2 am." A photograph showed the crew seated on the boat, all wearing life jackets, with their hands in the air. The yacht is carrying a small shipment of humanitarian aid, including rice and baby formula. The Swedish foreign ministry said it was in contact with Israeli authorities. "Should the need for consular support arise, the Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will assess how we can best help the Swedish citizen/Greta Thunberg resolve her situation," a Swedish Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a written statement to Reuters. French President Emmanuel Macron's office said the president has asked Israeli authorities to release the French nationals on board as soon as possible. The French and Spanish foreign ministries said they had requested consular protection for their citizens aboard. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered the military on Sunday to prevent the Madleen from reaching Gaza, calling the mission a propaganda effort in support of Hamas. Turkey to export 48 of its nationally produced fighter jets to Indonesia
ANKARA, Turkey, June 11, (AP): Turkey will export 48 of its nationally-produced KAAN fighter jets to Indonesia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Wednesday, marking the first export deal for the advanced aircraft that is still in the development stage. Erdogan said in an X post that the 48 KAAN fighter jets would be manufactured in Turkey and exported to Indonesia, adding that Indonesia's "local capabilities' would be integrated into the production process. The Turkish leader didn't elaborate or disclose the financial details of the agreement. The deal came on the sidelines of the defense industry exposition, Indo Defence 2025, in Jakarta, Turkey's Sabah newspaper reported. "This agreement showcases the progress and achievements of our domestic and national defense industry,' Erdogan said. He also praised Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for his role in securing the agreement. Turkey's first indigenous fifth-generation fighter jet, the KAAN successfully completed its maiden flight in 2024. Its first units are expected to be delivered in 2028. The deal came amid growing economic and defense ties between Turkey and Indonesia. Earlier this year, the two countries agreed on the joint development of a Baykar combat-drone factory in Indonesia. Pakistan and Azerbaijan, which also have strong defense ties with Turkey, are reported to be interested in purchasing KAAN fighters.
