Yahoo08-03-2025

Two Oklahoma City metropolitan area teachers – from Choctaw and Tuttle – are among the 10 finalists for the 2025 Oklahoma teacher of the year award.
State schools Superintendent Ryan Walters announced the lists of finalists in a late Friday news release.
Each of the finalists were named as the teacher of the year at both their school site, then within their school district. It's unclear who made the decision to choose the 10 finalists, but the news release from the Oklahoma State Department of Education said the finalists 'will now be evaluated by a panel of Oklahomans.' Who will be on that panel wasn't announced.
The winner of the state honor will be announced at the state agency's annual InspireOK professional development event for educators in July. In past years, before Walters became state superintendent, 12 finalists traditionally were named and the announcement came in September.
The 2024 state teacher of the year was Rachel Keith from Ada High School.
This year's finalists are:
● Shelly Austin | Cushing High School
● G. Bruce Riggs | Claremore High School
● Paula Caudill | Collinsville Upper Elementary School
● Jennifer Meyer | Grove Elementary School
● Melissa Lytle | Bixby North Intermediate School
● Chrystal Reis | L.W. Westfall Elementary School, Choctaw
● Shaunda Usry | Robert E. Lee Early Childhood Center, Durant
● Lauren Draper | Tuttle Middle School
● Stacey Barker | Merritt Elementary School
● Melissa Evon | Elgin High School
Biographies of the 10 finalists can be found on the Oklahoma State Department of Education's Facebook page.
'These exceptional teachers represent the very best of Oklahoma education,' Walters said in a statement. 'Their passion and commitment to student success set the standard for educators across our state. I am honored to celebrate their achievements and look forward to seeing the impact they continue to make in their schools and communities.'

Elgin High School educator Melissa Evon named as Oklahoma's 2025 teacher of the year

An Elgin educator has been chosen as Oklahoma's 2025 teacher of the year. Melissa Evon, who teaches family and consumer sciences at Elgin High School in Comanche County, was announced as the winner of the honor on the night of Friday, June 27, at the Oklahoma State Department of Education's annual InspireOK conference, held this year in Norman. 'Melissa represents the very best Oklahoma has to offer,' said state schools Superintendent Ryan Walters. 'She has the heart of a teacher and unmatched passion for her students and we are so proud to recognize her exemplary work.' Evon has worked as an educator since 1992, according to the state agency. She is the first Elgin Public Schools teacher to receive the honor since Oklahoma named its first state teacher of the year in 1955. When the list of 10 finalists for the award was announced in March, Evon – in a social media post from the agency – discussed her love of teaching. 'Teaching is a profession where the most extraordinary moments occur in the unexpected connections, the collaborative discoveries, and the triumphs of students realizing their own potential,' she said. 'Each day, as I step into my Family and Consumer Sciences classroom, I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a part of my students' learning journeys. 'I see my role as similar to that of a silversmith, patiently refining, uncovering potential, and revealing the brilliance within each student. I believe in the lasting impact of acts of kindness and in fostering an environment where these bright young minds can thrive and discover their unique strengths.' Nate Meraz, the superintendent of Elgin Public Schools, said Evon has been named three times as that district's teacher of the year -- first as a high school history teacher, then as a middle school history teacher and now as a consumer science teacher. "Everything Melissa touches turns gold," Meraz told The Oklahoman. "She is one of the best human beings you'll ever meet. Go to your Facebook page and enter her name in the search bar right now; you'll see how many people mentioned her and have stories about how she has impacted their lives. It is truly amazing! "She seeks zero attention or praise and actually would shun the spotlight, but, our parents, school staff and our community all keep putting her in the spotlight with the amazing stories of how she impacts our students' lives on a daily basis." Each of the 10 state finalists were named as the teacher of the year at their school site, then within their school district. It's unclear who made the decision to choose the 10 finalists. The state Department of Education said in March the finalists would be evaluated by a panel of Oklahomans, but never said who would serve on that panel. According to the state Department of Education, Evon will spend the next year serving as the Oklahoma Ambassador of Teaching, sharing knowledge and resources with other educators around the state. She also will represent the state in the national teacher-of-the-year competition. The other nine finalists were Shelly Austin of Cushing High School, G. Bruce Riggs of Claremore High School, Paula Caudill of Collinsville Upper Elementary School, Jennifer Meyer of Grove Elementary School, Melissa Lytle of Bixby North Intermediate School, Chrystal Reis of L.W. Westfall Elementary School in Choctaw, Shaunda Usry of Robert E. Lee Early Childhood Center in Durant, Lauren Draper of Tuttle Middle School and Stacey Barker of Merritt Elementary School. When is Son's Day? When is Daughter's Day? Here's when to celebrate family 2025

Mother's and Father's days have passed officially, and the children are ready to be celebrated too. While both holidays have a month of their own to celebrate, Daughter's and Son's days are both celebrated in September. These holidays, although not traditionally observed to the same level as the spring holidays, are still great days to celebrate with your family. In addition to days for daughters and sons, the year has not passed on Sister's Day – sorry bros, going to have to wait until May 24 – which will arrive in August. However, parents don't need to be discouraged either, as Parents' Day is just over a month away. Here are the upcoming family holidays for the rest of the year. Parents' Day occurs annually on the fourth Sunday of July, making this year's holiday on Sunday, July 27, 2025. According to the National Day Archives, former President Bill Clinton got some headway on the holiday after signing a bill in 1994 that emphasized the significance of parents in family life. Sister's Day is celebrated annually on the first Sunday of August, making this year's holiday on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025. The day has an unknown origin, according to National Day Archives. The website suggests that appropriate ways to celebrate include spending time with your sister, whether that be a relative or someone with whom you share a sense of sisterhood. Before we get to separate holidays for sons and daughters, they have one joint holiday on Aug. 11, 2025. The holiday is celebrated annually on Aug. 11. Daughter's Day is celebrated on Sept. 25 annually, making this year's holiday on Thursday, September 25, 2025. National Daughter's Day celebrates daughters around the world. According to the National Day Archives, the holiday was created to 'erase the stigma in some countries attached to having a girl instead of a boy child,' and now is celebrated to cherish the gift of daughters. Son's Day has two days to celebrate. The first is annually on March 4 and the second on Sept. 28. The second occurrence falls on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025. It's unclear why there are two days to celebrate sons. Both holidays came about in the age of the internet, and some choose to blame social media for causing the double day. Father's best advice: Only back your car up as much as necessary; don't go overboard

Some argue fathers don't get their due when celebrating parenthood, that Father's Day is an afterthought for children compared to their considerations for Mother's Day. Spending for either day may back that up. Retail spending for Mother's Day this year was projected at $34 billion, and the National Retail Federation expected sales for Father's Day to hit $24 billion. Regardless of the monetary value placed on the day, for this Father's Day, we asked readers to share their comments about the impact fathers have had on their kids. If the few responses to our callout is an indicator, Father's Day might, indeed, be an afterthought or taken for granted. Here's what they said: My dad was an ordinary extraordinary man. He was born in 1920 and faced many of the hard times that Oklahoma faced. He wore overalls and was a farmer and oil pumper. We were poor, but proud. He had five children, and he wanted us to have more in life than he had. My father loved his wife and children and taught us the essentials to have a good life such as integrity, hard word, loving family, and loving God and your fellow man. My dad did not talk about people. If told us, 'If you can't say something good about someone, then just don't say anything.' He also would say, 'Don't stir the stink.' Those words ring out in my ears a lot as a mother, wife, coach, teacher, and neighbor. — Carol Bond Tiger, Morris, Oklahoma The most important lesson learned: "Don't lose your joy and keep a spiritual side to your life. Keep your respect for your parents. The meaner this old world gets the closer you need to keep to God. ... Hard work always pays off in the end." What being a father means to me? Grandkids; good times. — Johnny Ross, Elk City, Oklahoma More: With the right mentors, role models, young men can master, command their future | Opinion When I think of my dad, I can't help but think of the kindness he has taught me. When I'm angry and riled up he always guides me to a peaceful solution. He gives people the benefit of the doubt ― every time ― even when I don't always want to hear it. My dad is my best friend. When I get news or a metaphorical (or literal) punch in the gut, he's the first person I call. I'm his only child, a daughter, and even though at times I know he probably wouldn't have minded more outside sport time, he always supported my interests and wholeheartedly invested in every moment for my benefit.I can't walk through a store or go on a walk without being reminded of him. He's my hero. His best advice: 'Only back your car up as much as necessary; don't go overboard.' — Emily Rose Turner, Norman This article originally appeared on Oklahoman: Fathers may be under celebrated, but their advice endures | Opinion
