Download rockers told to take off smartwatches after moshpit ‘collisions' cause accidental 999 calls
When hundreds of 999 calls came in from fans at the Download festival two years ago, the emergency services must have thought a disaster was unfolding at the three-day heavy metal gig in Leicestershire.
In fact, the calls were made automatically from smartwatches and other devices worn by fans because 'the tech assumed that people in moshpits had been in a collision', according to Leicestershire police.
Now the force is appealing to those attending the festival this weekend to turn their devices to airplane mode or disable emergency alerts to avoid unnecessary 999 calls.
The number of 999 calls during the event doubled from the usual 600 or so over a long weekend.
'In previous years, due to wearable tech issues, we saw a rise of nearly 700 extra 999 calls in a weekend,' Leicestershire police said on social media this week. 'All those calls had to be assessed … to ensure there is no threat, risk or harm, taking our contact handlers away from answering true emergency calls.'
Police are asking fans to stay on the line if their device makes an accidental 999 call, or to answer callbacks made by emergency teams 'to let us know you are safe'.
According to one US personal injury law firm, moshpits 'always have risks and dangers' but can result in 'enjoyable chaos and energy release'.
Some wearable technology includes a 'crash detection' feature. Apple says its watches and some iPhones will sound an alarm and display an alert if they detect a 'severe car crash'. Unless the alert is cancelled, the device calls the emergency services after a 30-second countdown.
About 75,000 people are expected to attend the Download festival in Donington Park, a racetrack near Castle Donington in Leicestershire, for what the organisers call the 'UK's premier rock festival'.
The site has been open to campers since Wednesday with the rock festival opening on Friday. Green Day, Sleep Token and Korn are the daily headline acts at the festival.
This year's fancy dress theme is Friday 13th.
The organisers said: 'For everyone's safety and comfort, we ask that you don't bring any fake or replica weapons, including toy guns, swords or other realistic-looking props. These items can cause confusion during security checks and may be mistaken for real weapons by our teams or the police. They can also be distressing to other festival-goers.'

Apple's AI Misstep? 5 Tech Updates Your Business Can't Ignore
Here are five business technology news stories this week and how they affect your company. Did you miss them? Apple's annual World Wide Developer Conference this year seemed to fall short of expectations. According to one report its recent WWDC event has been a "disappointment on the AI front" and that the 'company failed to meet even the basic expectations. The same report said that 'Wall Street has also delivered a dip in the stock price after the event. There had been a lot of hype around Apple Intelligence a year ago. Many bullish analysts projected that this would start another big upgrade cycle for the iPhone and could open up new monetization options for the company. The hype has not met reality, and we have not seen any major upgrade trajectory in the iPhone in the last few quarters.' (Source: Seeking Alpha) Why this is important for your business: Two takes: 1 – The company is reinforcing its main product lines and that's a good thing. In its official update the company said it is rolling out major updates to its services this fall, enhancing user experiences across its operating systems. It is also upgrading Apple Maps to give users preferred routes and visited places for smarter navigation. Apple Wallet will feature Apple Intelligence-powered order tracking, Digital ID integration, and enhanced Apple Pay features. 2 – Patience. Unlike some of its other big tech competitors, Apple is more hesitant releasing products based on technologies that still aren't working as they've been hyped. By this I mean AI. This is a company built on innovation, quality and reliability. So the company is going slower down this road and only releasing new features when they are reliable enough to use. Does this mean that they're behind in the AI 'race?' Considering how long this race still has to go, I don't think so at all. Microsoft Teams is rolling out new feature allowing users to open core collaboration components such as chat, meetings, and files – in separate windows with Teams. This provides a more modular workflow across multiple displays or tasks – and allows users to tailor their workspace. The enhancement is in response to user's request for greater control over application management. Rolling out soon to commercial users, a preview is available by joining the Teams Public Preview or Targeted Release. 'This improvement enables users to manage their core collaboration applications more efficiently, ultimately leading to a more streamlined and effective work environment,' Microsoft stated. (Source: Cyber Security News) Why this is important for your business: As Teams grows in popularity more users within organizations need better control over their access, collaboration and data sharing. They also want a more individualized experience. These updates are a big step in that direction. If your company is using Teams my advice is to make sure it's the latest build and to also pay for a little training from a Microsoft consultant so that your users are fully taking advantage of this application. A new survey conducted by Reimagine Main Street in partnership with PayPal, reveals that 82 percent of small businesses believe adopting AI is essential to staying competitive. One thousand small businesses with revenue between $25,000–$5,000,000participated in the study. Over 50 percent are exploring AI, while 25 percent have already integrated it into daily operations. With automation, 77 percent see AI as a game-changer for marketing and customer engagement. Additionally, 53 percent say AI-powered cash flow forecasting would solve a major pain point by enhancing financial intelligence. Forty-five percent are eager to use AI for staffing, inventory, and marketing decisions. The survey categorizes businesses into Active Users, Explorers, and Non-Users – highlighting a shift from AI being a futuristic concept to a necessary tool for growth. (Source: PR Newswire) Why this is important for your business: I agree that AI is a game changer and that it will have a big impact on small businesses. But I don't believe it's having that impact yet. Sure, some businesses are dabbling with generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini and CoPilot, but these tools are still hallucinating (i.e. making errors) too much to be relied upon for any serious decision making. HubSpot has launched the first CRM deep research connector with ChatGPT, allowing businesses to apply AI-powered analysis to their customer data. This integration enables marketing, sales, and service teams to gain actionable insights without requiring extensive data expertise. Key features include AI-driven customer segmentation – businesses can analyze customer cohorts and create targeted engagement strategies. Sales optimization allows teams go identify high-value opportunities based on revenue, industry, and technology stack. Customer success insights utilizes AI to help detect inactive accounts with growth potential and suggests re-engagement strategies. HubSpot emphasizes that this tool democratizes advanced analytics for SMBs, making AI-powered insights more accessible. (Source: Business Wire) Why this is important for your business: This is really a game-changer for CRM applications. And there will more of this. But think of it: rather than building your own internal model you simply connect a chatbot like ChatGPT to your CRM system and then train it on your data. This way your sales and service teams can not only ask questions about customers, prospects and other CRM activities but ultimately launch agents to perform tasks automatically based on these queries. My expectation is that most mainstream CRM vendors will partner with the major chatbot providers to offer similar functionality in the near future. User-generated content (UGC) is becoming increasingly valuable for SEO – as Google prioritizes helpful, trustworthy, and people-first content. The search experience is evolving as platforms like Reddit and TikTok are influencing search rankings, indicating that users prefer real experiences and recommendations. UGC's SEO benefits include reviews, forums, and social posts help brands boost visibility and engagement. Google is integrating UGC more prominently to meet user expectations.. (Source: Search Engine Land) Why this is important for your business: As search behavior shifts, brands that embrace UGC will gain a competitive edge. Each week I round up five business technology news stories and give my thoughts on how these stories impact your business and mine.

Verizon announces wild new offer to win back angry customers
Over the past year, Verizon (VZ) has embarked on the shaky path of gradually hiking the prices of its services, which has frustrated some of its customers. In January last year, Verizon increased the monthly prices of its myPlan and New Verizon Plan wireless accounts due to "rising operational costs." Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter During an earnings call later that month, Verizon Consumer Group CEO Sowmyanarayan Sampath said customers "feel very comfortable" about the company's prices, since it was "delivering more value." Related: Verizon makes bold move to make it harder for customers to leave By March, Verizon also made the harsh decision to increase the price of its Verizon Mobile Protect Multi-Device plan and Verizon Mobile Secure Multi-Device plan by $8, which applied to wireless customers with four to 20 lines. Image source: Morris/Bloomberg via Getty Images In response to these changes, customers took to social media to express outrage, with some even threatening to switch phone providers. In April, Verizon revealed in its first-quarter earnings report of 2025 that it faced a net loss of 289,000 total postpaid phone customers during the quarter. In a note to investors, analysts at New Street Research said the steep loss in customers matches Verizon's "worst result on record." Related: Verizon raises red flag about concerning customer behavior During an earnings call that month, Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg admitted that recent price increases contributed to the steep decrease in customers during the quarter. "We did have a slow start on postpaid phone net adds, largely driven by elevated churn due to recent price ups and pressure from federal government accounts," said Vestberg. Amid this alarming change in customer behavior, Verizon has decided to make a generous offer to attract and retain customers. The company has announced a new bundle in which new and existing customers with a myPlan mobile account can obtain a smartphone, tablet, and smartwatch when they trade in an eligible phone. The bundle specifically allows Apple users to receive an iPhone 16 Pro, iPad (A16), and Apple Watch Series 10. Google users can obtain a Google Pixel 9, Galaxy Tab A9+ 5G, and Pixel Watch 3. Also, Samsung users can get a Samsung Galaxy S25, Galaxy Tab A9+ 5G, and Galaxy Watch7. Exactly When Apple Will Launch iPhone 17 And iPhone 17 Pro
that's when the company has said the next generation of software, iOS 26, will go on general release — it's just had a surprise update to the developer beta cycle. Exactly when the phones will launch hasn't been announced, but it's possible to nail down the date with some accuracy. Here's all you need to know. Apple's current series is iPhone 16. When will iPhone 17 launch? Apple's biggest keynote of the year always features the iPhone, and usually the Apple Watch plus, sometimes, another product like AirPods. It always falls in roughly the first half of September, mostly on a Tuesday or Wednesday. And never on Sept. 11. This gives us three possible pairs of dates: Tuesday, Sept. 2 or Wednesday, Sept. 3, Tuesday, Sept. 9 or Wednesday, Sept. 10, or Tuesday, Sept. 16 or Wednesday, Sept. 17. We can rule out the first pair as that completely clashes with the big consumer electronics show in Berlin, IFA, which runs Sept. 5-9, with press days just before that. U.S. and international press will be tied up in Germany that week. Also, Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 1, and Apple doesn't choose the week Labor Day falls in. The final pair of dates seems too late for me, though they're not impossible — if Apple hits a snag in production, it can move the launch to that week. Most likely are Tuesday, Sept. 9 or Wednesday, Sept. 10. Last year, Apple chose Monday, Sept. 9 for the keynote, so the Monday in that week, Sept. 8, is also possible. My gut says it will be on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. Pacific in Apple's Cupertino HQ. Assuming the keynote is on Sept. 10, or one day that week, the release date, as sure as eggs is eggs, will be the Friday of the following week: Friday, Sept. 18. If for some reason the keynote moves to the week beginning Sept. 17, then Friday, Sept. 25 will be the onsale date for the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max (if those are the names selected for the phones expected). But my money's on Friday, Sept. 18.
