Five years in jail for man who created pornographic images of president and former police minister

The Pietermaritzburg regional court has sentenced Scebi Nene, 36, to five years in jail for creating pornographic images of high-profile people including President Cyril Ramaphosa and former police minister Bheki Cele.
Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, said Nene pleaded guilty to a number of cyber crimes committed between September 2022 and May 2023.
Nene downloaded images of certain individuals, including former police commissioner Khehla Sithole and superimposed images of a sexual nature onto them.
'This created a false impression the images were the authentic images of the complainants. Nene then disseminated these manipulated images.'
In his plea Nene said he was employed by Coca-Cola between 2018 and 2019 and during this time he felt people were following him.
He reported this to police who told him to observe if it happened again and return to them.
Nene said he continued being followed and reported this at two other police stations, but claimed his claims were dismissed. He then approached the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), but nobody took him seriously.
Ramkisson-Kara said he contacted Cele's office but still received no assistance.
'That was when he downloaded the images of the complainants and the images of a sexual nature and superimposed the two, making it seem that it was the complainants in those graphic images. He also admitted to distributing the images. Nene mentioned that he is remorseful and has undertaken not to commit a similar offence again in the future,' she said.
In the matter prosecuted by Adv Shika Siverpersad, Nene was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for cyber forgery. The cyber uttering and disclosing of the intimate images was taken as one for sentencing and he was sentenced to three years' imprisonment. Both sentences will run concurrently.
'The NPA views offences of this nature in a serious light. We advise members of the public to use technology with caution and due regard for the consequences,' said Ramkisson-Kara.

Foreigners without proper paperwork arrested in Gqeberha

At least 30 foreigners were arrested in Gqeberha on Sunday for allegedly being in the country without proper documentation. Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge confirmed the arrests on Sunday night. 'The department of immigration arrested a total of 30 foreigners,' he said. 'Twenty are being held at the Mount Road police station and 10 at the Humewood police station.' According to Beetge, the foreigners were believed to have come from a township in Addo and later sought refuge at a church in Gqeberha. 'The department of immigration, which falls under the home affairs directorate, effected the arrests,' he said. 'That department has a whole section that can arrest people in terms of SA's home affairs and immigration laws.' 'For further details, please contact home affairs directly.' Home affairs spokesperson Duwayne Esau indicated he would respond on Monday morning. Last weekend, clashes between locals and foreigners broke out in Addo in response to the murder of a community member outside a tavern on the Saturday. Residents from Valencia in Addo then took to the streets and allegedly attacked foreigners in the area. A further three people were killed and at least 10 others injured. Some of the foreigners then sought shelter at a church in Gqeberha. The Herald

Gauteng police seek information on murder of IFP deputy chief whip

Gauteng police are calling on anyone with information on the murder of an IFP leader, Khethamabala Petros Sithole, to come forward. Sithole was gunned down on Saturday afternoon in Katlehong in what his party has described as an assassination. According to Gauteng police spokesperson Brig Brenda Muridili, Sithole was shot during a meeting at a hostel. 'It is reported that a group of men had a meeting at Buyafuthi hostel in Katlehong on May 31. At about 5.30pm, three unknown men passing by the meeting opened fire on the group. 'One person was declared dead on scene while two more people were taken to the hospital with gunshot injuries. One of the two injured was treated and discharged while the other one is still in hospital. The motive for the shootings is unknown at this stage, and no-one has been arrested,' Muridili said. She said police investigations were continuing and asked anyone who might have information that could assist with the investigation to contact the Crime Stop toll-free number 08600 10111 or anonymously report tip-offs on MySAPS App. In a brief statement, IFP spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa said Sithole was assassinated in Katlehong by unknown assailants. 'Details are still sketchy at the moment and it is the IFP's expectation that the law enforcement agencies will spare no effort to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice,' Hlengwa said. He said Sithole was a member of the IFP's national council and served as the party's deputy chief whip in parliament. He described him as a hard-working servant and leader of the people and the country. 'We have lost a trusted patriot and a diligent leader of the IFP. Jobe joined the IFP in his youth and served in various party structures, including being IFP Gauteng provincial chairperson. 'He served as a councillor in Ekurhuleni and thereafter served a brief stint in the Gauteng Legislature from 2009 to 2010. He was redeployed to the National Assembly in 2010, where he served with diligence until his passing.' TimesLIVE

Constable shoots three people, killing one, before turning gun on himself

A police constable allegedly shot his colleague and two other people — killing one of them — before turning the gun on himself in the Machunwini area of the Harry Gwala district in the early hours of Saturday. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda said three police members from the tactical response team deployed in the Eastern Cape were driving home to the Free State when they allegedly missed a detour sign at the road works and their vehicle collided with barricades. Two community members responded and helped by contacting ambulance services and a tow truck. Netshiunda said the constable got out of the vehicle and shot the tow truck driver. 'When his colleague intervened, the constable reportedly shot him and another community member. The constable then reportedly turned the gun on himself.' The constable and the tow truck driver were declared dead at the scene, while the sergeant and the other man were rushed to hospital. The third police officer survived the shooting. The motive for the shooting is unknown. Police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder, inquest and reckless and negligent driving. TimesLIVE
