Tazewell County Sheriff's Office warns community about EBT card scams
TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA (WVNS) — The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office warned the community about EBT card scams.
According to a post on the Tazewell County Virginia Sheriff's Office's Facebook page, law enforcement received multiple reports about people with compromised Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards.
The post stated that the reports included information about unauthorized transactions that were made out of the area, and that the full amount was withdrawn from some people's accounts.

The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office stated that people can protect their EBT cards by keeping their PIN a secret, changing their PIN regularly, and keeping an eye out for any unauthorized activity on their account. Individuals can also be careful when using the cards, cover the keypad when entering the PIN number, and look out for any tampered card readers.
People can report suspicious activity or unauthorized transactions at their local department of Social Services, and additional information can be found on the Virginia Department of Social Services website.

Alabama officials recommend locking food stamp cards to prevent out-of-state fraud
HUNTSIVLLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) is recommending that all EBT cardholders utilize the new Lock/Unlock feature on the ConnectEBT app and website, especially the 'Lock Card Everywhere' option which will help block out of state fraud. From May 2023 to Dec. 20, 2024, Alabama DHR replaced $15.9 million of SNAP benefits due to EBT fraud. From October to December 2024, over 26,000 reimbursements were approved for $10.5 million. The Department believes that 100 percent of the funds were stolen from outside of the state. Data shows that around $1.8 million in Alabama EBT expenditures happened in the state of New York and around $2.2 million was spent in Pennsylvania. DHR said it believes most, if not all, of this is fraud. 'The very best thing our SNAP clients can do is lock their card when they aren't using it,' said Alabama DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner. 'With the funds being stolen by utilizing out of state EBT terminals, we believe using our newest feature on ConnectEBT and locking the EBT card will truly combat this type of fraud.' Clients can choose from two options when locking their card: 'Lock Card Everywhere' or 'Lock Card'. 'Lock Card Everywhere' completely locks cards to ALL purchases anywhere. The 'Lock Card' option will lock cards from purchases outside of Alabama but does allow online purchases. DHR strongly recommends the 'Lock Card Everywhere' option at all times when the card is not in use. In the event a card is used at a location for a food purchase, the business can access the amount due, even if the card is then immediately locked by the user. Authorization for the purchase is in real-time and based on the card status at the time of the transaction. If the card is locked when the card is swiped or keyed in, then the retailer's transaction will fail due to the locked card status. But if the cardholder locks the card, even if it is immediately AFTER the transaction is complete, the transaction would have already been authorized and completed and the transaction would be successful as long as available funds were in the account at the time of the purchase. EBT cardholders may also sign up for alerts through the ConnectEBT app and website. These alerts include account activity alerts through the app, text, and/or email. Millcreek man says over $1000 was stolen from EBT account
David Cannavino is just one of the countless people here in Erie who depend on his EBT card to buy food and other necessities. He said he had over $1,000 in his account, but when he checked it again on Thursday, he was left with only $1.05. 'I just… I'm still dumbfounded about it,' said Cannavino, a Millcreek resident. Cannavino's account showed his card was charged twice to a bodega he's never heard of in Chicago. Credit card skimming scams: What they are, and how to avoid being a victim He said he doesn't use a credit card machine without checking for skimmers first and always shops at the same places, and he believes his account was hacked. 'It's going to be nuts until the card gets loaded again because I'm retired, I'm on social security and that's all I get, so it impacts me hard,' said Cannavino. After he learned that his EBT account was empty, he came to the Erie County Assistance Office on Holland Street, but he didn't get very far. 'I let them know about it, I gave them my card, and then they said, 'Okay, well…' They sent me in to talk to some guy and the guy says, 'There's nothing we can do about it. Our hands are tied.' So, you know, what am I going to do now?' said Cannavino. SNAP funds stolen from 17 Pennsylvanians, over $8,000 lost Cannavino said he spoke to other recipients at the assistance office who said their money disappeared, too. An official at the assistance office told JET24/FOX66 that they couldn't answer our questions but referred us to another official in Harrisburg. That official told us that he hadn't heard about the problem but assured his office is working to get to the bottom of it. However, that's not going to help Cannavino and the other recipients who now don't have money to buy food. New lock safety feature could help SNAP benefit recipients avoid theft 'Due to the end of congressional authorization in December 2024, benefits stolen via card skimming, fraud or other electronic theft after December 20, 2024, cannot be reissued,' said Val Arkoosh, PA Department of Human Services Secretary. According to the US Food and Nutrition Service, the 2025 American Relief Act did not extend the authority to replace stolen SNAP benefits.
