Historic Goldfields cycle race canned for 2025

West Australian23-05-2025

One of the region's most time-honoured annual sporting events, the Goldfields Cyclassic, has been cancelled this year with no guarantees that it will be resurrected.
Since 1928, the Cyclassic has taken pride of place among Australia's oldest and most historic road races on the June long weekend, as the blue-ribbon event on the Eastern Goldfields Cycle Club's annual calendar.
Club chair Angus McConnell could not be reached for comment on Friday.
However, formal notification of this year's cancellation was made on the event's official website, via a statement.
'The EGCC wishes to announce that this year's Goldfields Cyclassic will not be going ahead,' the statement said.
'We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all stakeholders, sponsors, volunteers, suppliers and to everyone who has participated in the event over the years.
'While the EGCC won't be hosting the event in 2025, we remain committed to our members and assessing the future viability of the Cyclassic.'
Logistically, the event requires a power of work that includes operating special charter flights from Perth to the Goldfields and back for competitors and support crews.
Charters were made available for last year's events because commercial flights to Kalgoorlie-Boulder do not arrive in time for race registrations and briefings.
It is understood dwindling numbers had placed additional pressure on the EGCC committee, following the withdrawal of a Perth-based events company as the main organisers.
The Cyclassic was cancelled in 2020 because of COVID-19 but was revived in 2021 amid an excellent field, and the 2022 event comprised $20,000 prizemoney.
Formerly the Menzies to Kalgoorlie Classic, the format was changed in 2011 to coincide with the Leonora Golden Gift athletics carnival.
It was just the second time in the program's long history the race did not end in Kalgoorlie-Boulder and reinforced its standing as one of Australian cycling's most historic events.
The route was reversed in 1994 as part of the Menzies Shire Council's centenary celebrations and was won by star Kalgoorlie-Boulder rider Paul Miller, a former European professional.
The 2023 Cyclassic was boosted by the inaugural Minara Resources Leonora Women's Classic, from Menzies to Leonora, that was raced on the second day of the two-stage program.

‘Ridiculous': Blues fans fume at Laurie Daley selection decision as NSW side for Game 2 is revealed

NSW coach Laurie Daley has made two changes to the Blues side that won Game 1, with Storm forward Stefano Utoikamanu replacing the injured Mitch Barnett and Lindsay Smith coming in for Haumole Olakau'atu who has withdrawn from the squad. After Barnett picked up an ugly knee injury last round, Utoikamanu was locked in a three-way battle with Keaon Koloamatangi and Terrell May for a spot on the Blues bench. Storm coach and Daley's NSW team adviser Craig Bellamy threw his support behind Utoikamanu following Melbourne's impressive 38-14 victory over the Cowboys on Friday night, suggesting he was the man for the job. The front-rower produced 146 run metres and 59 post-contact metres in 44 minutes, in a picture perfect Origin audition. 'He was in the camp as the 19th, 20th player, so you'd think he'll be right up there in the firing line,' Bellamy said after the match. And Daley has backed in the super coach, selecting Utoikamanu on the bench for Game 2, which will take place Wednesday week in Perth. Matt Burton, Koloamatangi and Campbell Graham have been selected in Daley's 20-man squad for Game 2 to be played Wednesday week. However, while Blues fans as a whole were pleased with the team selection, the decision to go with Utoikamanu over the likes of Koloamatangi or May, raised a few eyebrows. 'Kaeon should be in the team ahead of Stefano,' one fan said in response to the Game 2 team list. 'Keaon and Terell May should be there.' another added. 'Picking Stefano is ridiculous and Smith cmon now,' a third wrote. While another said: 'Loz has lost the plot. Stefano and Smith in the squad and no May, hahaha. He's got it so wrong.' Meanwhile Olakau'atu has put the birth of his second child ahead of the opportunity to be part of the Blues squad for the second State of Origin game, informing Daley of his decision to remain in NSW. Olakau'atu, who was set to be named in the extended squad, turned up at NSW headquarters to inform them of his desire to remain home to be by his partner's side as they prepare to welcome their first child into the world. Brisbane at the centre of vast alleged money laundering operation

In just 15 months, a Brisbane businessman allegedly made $9.5 million in cash and cryptocurrency. A tidy profit for the owner of a sales promotion company. Another business owner in West End allegedly made $6.4 million over a 17-month period, supposedly from his classic car dealership. Federal police now allege the men were part of a large, sophisticated money laundering scheme linked to a Gold Coast-based security company that used its armoured transport unit as a front for its crimes. Seventeen properties, vehicles, crypto wallets, bank accounts and about $21 million were seized last week after more than a dozen homes and businesses in Queensland and NSW were raided. The couple behind the Gold Coast security company and the two Brisbane men were arrested and hit with a string of charges including money laundering and handling the proceeds of crime. 'This plot was elaborate and calculated, and it demonstrates the lengths criminals will go to make money,' said Detective Superintendent Adrian Telfer from the Australian Federal Police. The arrests are the culmination of a nearly two-year investigation by Queensland Police's Joint Organised Crime Taskforce and Australian Federal Police, which began when officers traced suspicious transactions. Investigators followed a money trail linked to the 32-year-old sales promotion business owner in the south-western suburb of Heathwood, which led them to the Gold Coast security company, which had transferred $190 million cash into cryptocurrency.
