Ramadan Reads: Female Muslim authors pen reflections on modern Islam

Khaleej Times23-03-2025

As Muslims mark the holy month of Ramadan, two books from Dubai-based publisher, The Dreamwork Collective are offering readers the opportunity to explore different perspectives on the modern-day practice of Islam. Dream Du'a Do: A Millennial Muslimahs' Guide to Achieving Your Wildest Dreams, by Ruzina Ahad, delves into the world of self-help grounded in spirituality, while Mathilde Loujayne's Big Little Steps tackles women's common concerns in finding a balanced lifestyle while embracing the Islamic faith.
Born out of her own desire to realise her wildest dreams, Ahad began to pen her book during the 2020 lockdown. Like many people at that time, she was looking for a positive outlet for her thoughts and dreams but found that there was a lack of self-help literature connected to the Muslim faith. As she began to note down her own ambitions, the idea of Dream, du'a, do was born.
Written in three parts, the book begins by encouraging readers to identify their dreams and articulate what they want to achieve in life. A big believer of manifesting ambitions through the power of prayer, Ahad dedicates the second part of the book to du'a, the Arabic word for prayer, taking readers through the journey of achieving their wildest dreams. The third section of the book provides practical tips to link dreams and prayers, weaving principles of neuroscience and positive psychology with the teachings of Islam.
Originally aimed at the Millennial Muslimahs, Ahad says, 'As a young Muslim woman who was trying to find her way, there was not enough literature out there for me, but I've also discovered that non-Muslim women have loved my book as well. The text assumes that the reader knows nothing about the Islamic language and breaks down complex stories into simple prose, with some gentle humour along the way.'
Also drawing on her own experience of a gap in Islamic literature, French national, Loujayne, set out to write the book she felt was missing from the bookshelves when she converted to the faith. Big Little Steps is labelled as 'a woman's guide to finding a balanced lifestyle and a glowing heart in Islam'. The book reflects on Loujayne's journey of conversion and explores the questions that she, and those around her, had about the religion.
Reflecting on her personal experiences of grief, moving countries, work, marriage, and motherhood, Loujayne set out to explore women's common concerns and break through the myths of gender in Islam. Based on interviews with more than fifty women from different countries, Loujayne gathered all the questions she and her Muslim sisters had encountered in their Islamic education, to develop a one-stop guide to help women to tackle these topics.
Aimed at readers who are simply curious about Islam, as well as those who have already embraced the faith, Big Little Steps is an accessible book for non-Arabic speakers, with Islamic terminology expressed in the English language. Speaking about her hope for the book, Loujayne says, 'My mission is to share what I've learned over the years, backed up by beautiful verses from the Quran and narrations of the Prophet Mohammad. I want to unearth what Muslim women have achieved in many fields over the centuries. I also want to shed light on the way women were treated before the Quran was revealed, and how ground-breaking Islam was.'

Far from home, expats in UAE embrace Eid Al-Adha spirit with friends who became family

3 June 2025 01:00 AMEINAH ALZEYOUDI (ABU DHABI)Eid Al-Adha is a time of deep spiritual reflection and joyful gatherings — a celebration rooted in faith, sacrifice, and community. For many expatriates, the occasion can feel 'bittersweet' as being far from loved ones adds a note of longing. Yet, as the UAE becomes a second home and friends turn into family, they learn new ways to embrace the spirit Eid, recreating traditions and making new memories in a place where they find a sense of belonging. Ndeye Marieme Sow, a Senegalese expatriate who lives in Abu Dhabi, has always known Eid as a time for family reunions, 'an occasion to create heartwarming memories with my loved ones'.'Back home in Senegal, all my relatives would come together at my grandparents' house in Tivaouane to celebrate,' Sow added. Having to spend Eid away from home hit her hard at first, she said. "But over time, I've learnt to recreate that joyful atmosphere here in Abu Dhabi with friends who've become like family.'They would plan a feast together and whip it up as a team, she said. 'Cooking together really revives the Eid spirit, especially for us Senegalese — or Africans in general — where food is such a big part of the celebration."They would share meals and laughter and even invite their non-Muslim friends to join the celebrations. In the evening, they would dress up and head out for dinner at a restaurant and just enjoy the moment, Sow added. 'What touches me the most is the warmth I receive from my Emirati friends, who never fail to surprise me with generous and thoughtful Eid gifts. It reminds me that even far from home, I'm surrounded by love,' she said. For Mohammad Khaldoun, a Jordanian engineer based in Dubai, Eid is a time to honour tradition. Though far from home, he continues the rituals he grew up with — those passed down through generations.'Eid Al-Adha, for me, has always been about the early morning prayers with my father and uncles, followed by visiting neighbours with trays of sweets. In Dubai, I try to keep those traditions alive by attending the community prayer at the mosque and then spending the day visiting friends who are also far from home,' Khaldoun said."It's not exactly the same, but we've built our own little circle of warmth and belonging. Every year, I call my parents right after prayer — it's become a ritual in itself.'Amal, an Indian teacher in Abu Dhabi, couldn't help but feel the difference between the celebrations in the UAE and those in her hometown. 'Back home in India, Eid is loud, vibrant, and full of relatives dropping by from all over the city. Here, it's quieter — but also more personal. I prepare traditional dishes like biryani and shemai (traditional dessert), then video-call my family as we eat together virtually.'"It's bittersweet,' she said. 'We're apart, but technology brings us together in small but meaningful ways.' More than anything, it is her community of fellow teacher that keeps her going, she said. 'We exchange food and memories, and somehow, it still feels like Eid.'

ACC hosts "Al-Adiyat... Out of the Frame" exhibition

Ali Al-Mimar: A life devoted to Arabian horses Ali Al-Mimar, a graduate of the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad (1985) and a student of the late artist Faiq Hassan, has spent nearly four decades capturing the essence of the Arabian horse. His focus on this noble creature stems from its deep-rooted symbolism in Arab and Islamic heritage—representing pride, dignity, strength, and speed. Al-Mimar has held several solo exhibitions across the Arab world and participated in numerous artistic festivals. Paintings reflect realism, symbolism, and emotion The exhibition featured around twenty paintings in various sizes, depicting horses in dynamic and serene settings—grazing, running, or interacting in harmony with their environment. Some works leaned toward abstraction, emphasising traits like strength and freedom, such as a horse's head crowned with a soaring falcon or wild horses captured in moments of unrestrained energy. Critical reception and artistic analysis In a post-exhibition discussion, Dr Omar Abdel Aziz praised Al-Mimar's work for blending classical European techniques with the Arab world's most celebrated cultural symbol—the Arabian horse. He emphasised the animal's embodiment of both aesthetic beauty and emotional depth, portraying a duality of motion and stillness. According to Dr Aziz, the artist's compositions allow for varied interpretations, offering viewers multiple layers of meaning. The artist's perspective on his work Al-Mimar shared his creative philosophy, explaining that his artworks strive to go beyond surface beauty. 'My paintings are parts of human stories set in dramatic or still atmospheres,' he said. 'They carry emotions, myth, and magical realism—all orbiting around humanity as the central theme.' He added that the themes of pride, pain, and the metaphor of 'silent neighing' are ever-present in his works, which aim to express freedom and introspection through color and technique. The exhibition affirmed Ali Al-Mimar's status as one of the most significant contemporary artists specialising in the depiction of Arabian horses.
