Hamas source says Israeli strike kills Hamas official in Gaza hospital
Gaza City – An Israeli air strike on Sunday killed a member of Hamas's political bureau as he underwent treatment in hospital, a source in the Islamist movement said, after Israel confirmed it targeted 'a key terrorist'.
'The Israeli army assassinated Hamas political bureau member Ismail Barhoum,' the Hamas source said, requesting anonymity to speak more freely.
'Warplanes bombed the operating room at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, where Barhoum was receiving treatment after sustaining critical injuries in an air strike targeting his home in Khan Yunis at dawn last Tuesday.'
AFP photos showed the building of about four-storeys largely undamaged except for fire blazing in one section off a stairwell.
Barhoum is the fourth member of Hamas's political bureau killed since last Tuesday when Israel resumed air strikes in the territory after an impasse over continuing a ceasefire.
Israel's military confirmed the hospital strike which it said was conducted with 'precise munitions' following extensive intelligence-gathering.
It said in a statement that the target was a key member of 'the Hamas terrorist organisation who was operating inside the Nasser Hospital compound,' the military said.
The Ministry of Health in Hamas-run Gaza said Israeli forces 'have just targeted the surgery building inside the Nasser Medical Complex, which houses many patients and wounded individuals, and a large fire has erupted at the site.'
Gaza's civil defence rescue agency said the hospital's emergency department had been targeted. The agency did not provide immediate details on casualties.
Earlier Sunday, Hamas said an Israeli air strike the previous day near Khan Yunis killed Salah al-Bardawil, a senior member of its political bureau.
Bardawil, 65, was killed along with his wife in a camp in al-Mawasi, the group said.
The Israeli military confirmed that it had targeted Bardawil, saying that 'as part of his role, (he) directed the strategic and military planning' of Hamas in Gaza.
His 'elimination further degrades Hamas' military and government capabilities', it added.

The Qatari government press continues to declare its full-throated support for Hamas and its terrorist activities against Israel, especially for its October 7, 2023 attack on Israel in which some 1,200 people were murdered and 251 were taken hostage. This approach is in line with Qatar's unconditional support for its protégé Hamas.[1] One expression of this support was an article published June 8, 2025 by the Qatari Al-Raya government daily. In it, senior writer Babiker Issa[2] praised Muhammad Sinwar, a top official of the Hamas military wing, the 'Izz Ad-Din Al-Qassam Brigades, and one of the planners of the October 7 attack. Sinwar, killed recently in the Gaza Strip, was the brother of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in October 2024. Under the headline "Sinwar – Icon of the Palestinian Resistance," Issa called Muhammad Sinwar "a daring fighter" and "an honorable and great warrior." He went on to describe him as "an icon of the national struggle on the land of Palestine and in Gaza," and as "the planner and the mastermind – with his comrades the fighters – of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation on October 7, 2023… which restored to the Palestinian issue its brilliance and its glory." Also in his article, Issa placed Muhammad Sinwar alongside prominent historical figures such as the Prophet Muhammad and Jesus Christ, freedom fighters such as Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela, and PLO leaders such as Yasser Arafat and his deputy Abu Jihad, who had headed the Fatah military wing and was responsible for the murder of dozens of Israelis in numerous terrorist attacks in the 1970s and 1980s. South Korea in ‘final stages' to sign major tank deal with Poland
Seoul – South Korea is in the 'final stages' of negotiations to potentially sign a major deal to supply K2 tanks to Poland, according to South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration on Tuesday. In 2022, the two countries signed a $13.7 billion arms deal — Seoul's largest to date — which included South Korean K2 tanks and fighter jets for Poland, Ukraine's ally and neighbour. The negotiations for the potential upcoming deal — part of the broader 2022 agreement — are 'in the final stages, with both governments and companies working to expedite its conclusion', an official from South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration told AFP. While the agency did not disclose the amount, it said if signed, the deal would be the 'largest ever based on a single weapon system'. South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that the potential deal is worth around $6 billion, with the country's Hyundai Rotem set to manufacture 117 tanks and Poland's state-owned Polish Armaments Group producing 63 locally. Yonhap reported that the signing ceremony is scheduled to take place in late June in Poland, but the Defense Acquisition Program Administration said the 'signing schedule for the second contract has not yet been finalised'. 'This contract includes provisions such as local production and technology transfer, which have required a significant negotiation period,' it said in a statement. The contract was originally expected to be signed late last year, according to Yonhap, but was delayed due to issues including political turmoil in South Korea following the brief declaration of martial law in December. South Korea has emerged as a major player in global defence exports, as Moscow's invasion of Ukraine created opportunities for its industry to secure large-scale contracts across Europe and the Middle East. It has signed major arms deals with countries such as Poland and Romania, including the export of K9 Howitzers and Chunmoo missile systems. South Korea's President Lee Jae-myung, who took office last week, has vowed a more dovish approach towards Pyongyang — an ally of Russia — compared with his predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol. The nuclear-armed North, which technically remains at war with the South, has recently bolstered military ties with Russia. Pyongyang sent at least 14,000 troops to support Moscow's war in Ukraine, and officially declared the South an enemy state.
