India Gazette14-05-2025

New Delhi [India], May 14 (ANI): Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar and Dr. Sudesh Dhankhar, will be on a one-day tour to Jaipur, Rajasthan, to inaugurate the Bhairon Singh Shekhawat Memorial Library on the occasion of Former Vice-President's death anniversary in Jaipur, as per a release.
Bhairon Singh Shekhawat served as the 11th Vice-President of India, and ex-officio Chairman, Rajya Sabha from August 19, 2002 to July 21, 2007.
Shekhawat began his career in public life as a Member of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly in 1952, and later served as Chief Minister of the state of Rajasthan for three terms.
On the occasion of the 15th death anniversary of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, will depart from Delhi to Jaipur by special aircraft to attend an event scheduled at Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium via helicopter.
On this occasion, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Chief Minister of Rajasthan Bhajanlal Sharma, Member of Parliament Madan Rathore, and other distinguished guests will attend the event.
Earlier, VP Dhankar met Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil and discussed the issue of water supply in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu, Sikar, and Churu districts.
According to sources, the first joint meeting of the task force formed by the Rajasthan and Haryana governments for the implementation of the Yamuna Water Agreement was held on April 7 of this year, and the second joint meeting was conducted on April 25. A consultant will soon be appointed to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
It is worth noting that Jhunjhunu is the home district of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who has consistently worked towards resolving various regional issues, especially those related to agriculture and farmers. Recently, farmers have been protesting at Lal Chowk in Chirawa, demanding Yamuna water. This historic project aims to ensure drinking water supply, particularly to the water-scarce districts of Jhunjhunu, Sikar, and Churu.
Given the recent developments, the prospects for the ground-level implementation of the Yamuna Water Agreement have strengthened. Vice President Dhankhar's persistent efforts for a permanent solution to the region's water crisis have significantly advanced the realisation of this project.
It is important to recall that under an agreement signed in 1994 between Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi, a total of 11,983 MCM of Yamuna river water was allocated, out of which Rajasthan was allotted 1119 MCM annually. (ANI)

Cauvery Aarti: Prep works suspended after farmer protests

Mandya: The preliminary work for Cauvery Aarti project at the KRS Dam was suspended on Tuesday following opposition from local farmers. Preparatory activities, including land levelling and mud filling for the construction of a platform for the Aarti, were under way since Saturday. However, escalating protests by farmers prompted the district administration and the authorities concerned to halt the works immediately. In strong opposition to both the proposed amusement park and the Cauvery Aarti project, farmer leaders and members of progressive organisations announced a protest near the dam on Wednesday. SP Mallikarjun Baladandi visited the site on Tuesday and held a detailed discussion with local police and officials regarding the planned demonstration. In anticipation of the protest, tight security arrangements have been made to maintain law and order. MLA defends Cauvery Aarti, park project The opposition from farmers notwithstanding, Mandya MLA Ravikumar defended the proposed Cauvery Aarti and amusement park project at KRS Dam, describing it as a vital step toward the district's development and a significant source of employment. Addressing the concerns raised by farmer groups regarding the safety of the dam, Ravikumar dismissed them as unfounded. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Just because people visit, will they start chipping away at the dam's stones? These fears are baseless," he said. Farmer organisations have criticised the govt for allocating Rs 100 crore to the project, claiming it could be completed for just Rs 20 crore. Ravikumar refuted this allegation, asserting that a detailed project report (DPR) would justify the expenditure. "You can't just pull Rs 100 crore out of thin air. A DPR will detail how every rupee is spent."

Kamal Haasan to make Rajya Sabha debut, set to be elected unopposed

In a significant political development, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan is poised to make his debut in the Rajya Sabha. The MNM chief, along with five other candidates, is set to be elected unopposed after their nominations were officially accepted on Tuesday. As an ally of the DMK, Haasan-led MNM was allotted a Rajya Sabha seat as per an understanding reached between the two parties ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Haasan campaigned for the DMK alliance in last year's Parliamentary election. A release from the office of the Returning Officer/Additional Secretary, Legislative Assembly Secretariat, said the nominations of Makkal Neethi Maiam founder Haasan, DMK nominees P Wilson, SR Sivalingam and Rajathi and IS Inbadurai and M Dhanapal (both AIADMK), were taken up for scrutiny on Tuesday. With the nomination of these candidates being accepted, they are now set to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. Wilson will be representing the state for a successive term, while this would be Haasan's maiden innings in the House of Representatives. He had unsuccessfully contested the 2021 Assembly polls in Coimbatore South and lost to BJP Mahila Morcha chief Vanathi Srinivasan. He joined the DMK-led bloc last year. Six Rajya Sabha members from Tamil Nadu, including DMK ally MDMK's top leader Vaiko and PMK's Anbumani Ramadoss, are set to retire on July 24, 2025, and the Election Commission had last month announced elections to the Upper House from Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, nominations from seven independent candidates were rejected during the same process. The candidates filed nomination papers to contest for the June 19 biennial polls to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu. In the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Haasan signed and presented the papers to the Returning Officer and Additional Secretary (Legislative Assembly), B Subramaniyam, at the Secretariat. The key Rajya Sabha election-related dates are June 2, 2025 (issue of notification), June 9 (last date for nominations), June 10 (scrutiny of nominations, June 12 (last date for withdrawal of candidatures) and June 19 (date of poll and counting of votes).
