Barcelona drops points in 1-1 draw vs Betis
Barcelona spurned a golden chance to extend their lead to six points clear of its direct pursuer and rival Real Madrid, who suffered a surprising 2-1 home defeat to Valencia in the 30th round of the Spanish Football League.
At the Olympic Stadium, Lluís Companys, in front of 47,043 spectators, Barcelona took the lead through Gavi (7), before Betis quickly equalised thanks to Brazilian Natan (17).
Nine consecutive matches
Barcelona, who had won nine consecutive La Liga matches before this draw and had not lost since the beginning of the year, raised their tally to 67 points, occupying first place, four points ahead of Real Madrid, before hosting Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals four days later.
Meanwhile, Betis, with their eighth draw of the season, moved temporarily up to fifth place with 48 points, ahead of sixth-placed Villarreal (47), who face fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao with 53 points.

Brazil and Ecuador secured their spots at the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday, taking the second and third of South America's six automatic qualifying berths after champions Argentina booked their ticket in March. Ecuador qualified for their second straight World Cup by avoiding defeat in Peru. The visitors were penned in their own half for the final 20 minutes after midfielder Alan Franco was shown a second yellow card. The draw all but ended Peru's hopes of qualifying, leaving them with 12 points, six behind Venezuela. Earlier on Tuesday, Uruguay took a step closer to securing a spot with a 2-0 home victory over Venezuela at the Estadio Centenario, a victory which also snapped a four-match winless run in South American qualifiers. Uruguay dominated much of the first half but struggled to break down a well-organised Venezuelan defence until Rodrigo Aguirre put the hosts ahead in the 42nd minute, heading in at the far post from a Maxi Araujo corner. Giorgian De Arrascaeta doubled Uruguay's lead just two minutes into the second half, firing a superb shot into the top-left corner to seal a win that secures Marcelo Bielsa's side of at least an inter-confederation playoff berth. Uruguay need only one point from their final two matches against Peru and Chile to make sure of a place at the finals. Argentina needed an 81st-minute equaliser from Thiago Almada to cancel out Luis Diaz's goal and secure a draw with Colombia, avoiding a second straight defeat to Nestor Lorenzo's side. Chile's hopes of reaching the finals ended with a 2-0 loss in Bolivia. Chile coach Ricardo Gareca resigned after the match.

Inter appoint former player Chivu as manager
PIERO CRUCIATTI / AFP Inter Milan appointed Cristian Chivu as coach on Monday in place of Simone Inzaghi who left following the Italian side's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain, with their former player signing a two-year deal. Romanian Chivu, who left Parma after less than four months in charge, played as a defender for Inter for seven years and was part of Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side in 2010 before ending his playing career at the Serie A club in 2014. "In February 2025, Cristian was given his first opportunity to coach a senior side at Parma... He led the Emilians to safety, with the team picking up 16 points from 13 matches under his guidance," Inter said in a statement. "Now, Cristian Chivu is beginning the third chapter of his Nerazzurri story. And he's doing so with the values that have always guided him: dedication, sacrifice and a tireless work ethic." Chivu's second Inter chapter started in 2018 when he returned, moving up through the ranks to manage the youth team and winning the league title in his first season in charge. Although Chivu lacks the experience that Inzaghi brought to the role, the 44-year-old made an immediate impact at Parma by shoring up a defence which had been leaking goals, with his side conceding only 13 compared to 27 in the previous 13 games. Parma performed better against the bigger sides under Chivu, beating Juventus, Bologna and Atalanta while earning draws against Inter, Lazio and Napoli. Chivu's Parma also did Inter a huge favour on the penultimate matchday with a 0-0 draw against Napoli, but Inzaghi's side failed to take advantage, conceding a late penalty in a 2-2 draw with Lazio, and Napoli went on to become champions. Inzaghi, who led Inter to the Scudetto in the previous campaign, ended last season trophyless, losing to neighbours AC Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final, and the campaign ended with the humiliating loss to PSG in Munich. Three days after that defeat, Inzaghi left Inter after four years at the helm, and joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal the next day. Chivu's first challenge is the Club World Cup where Inter begin the tournament on June 17 when they take on Mexico's Monterrey in Los Angeles followed by two games in Seattle against Urawa Red Diamonds and River Plate.

Portugal skipper Cristiano Ronaldo shed tears of joy as they won their second Nations League title on Sunday, insisting that winning trophies with his country beats all club honours. While Yamal, among the favourites to take home one of the most prestigious individual awards this year, struggled to make inroads, Ronaldo pounced on his chance, firing Portugal level from close range just past the hour mark.
