AMD buys Enosemi to boost co-packaged optics offerings

CNA6 days ago

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices said on Wednesday it has acquired Enosemi, a builder of photonic integrated circuits, to expand its co-packaged optics offerings across AI systems.
AMD did not disclose the financial details of the deal.
Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and investors have pinned their hopes on the optics technology, which they believe will be central to building ever-larger computers for AI systems.
Co-packaged optics, as the emerging technology is called, uses laser light to send information on fiber optic cables between chips, resulting in faster and more energy-efficient connections compared to traditional copper cables.
AMD acquired server maker ZT Systems for $4.9 billion earlier this year to expand its portfolio of artificial intelligence chips and hardware, and better compete with AI giant Nvidia.

NYSE Arca submits filing for listing of Truth Social Bitcoin ETF

NYSE Arca on Tuesday submitted a filing to the U.S. markets regulator seeking regulatory approval to list the Truth Social Bitcoin ETF. Spot bitcoin ETFs have gained popularity since their January 2024 debut, drawing billions in inflows as investors seek regulated, liquid exposure to the cryptocurrency. In February, the Trump Media and Technology Group applied to trademark six investment products that track bitcoin and the U.S. manufacturing and energy sectors. U.S. President Donald Trump is the majority owner of TMTG, which runs the social media platform Truth Social. The filing, known as a Form 19b-4, is a requirement that organizations such as stock exchanges submit to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to propose a rule change or to list a new product. It's a key procedural step before an exchange can begin listing and trading a new fund or instrument. The fund will seek to reflect the performance of bitcoin and has been "designed to remove the obstacles represented by the complexities and operational burdens involved in a direct investment in bitcoin." Bitcoin has gained 12.7 per cent so far this year and is trading above $105,000.

Hewlett Packard beats Q2 results estimates on AI demand; records $1.36 billion charge

Hewlett Packard Enterprise beat Wall Street's second-quarter revenue and profit estimates on Tuesday, driven by demand for its artificial-intelligence servers and hybrid cloud segment. Shares of the server-maker, which also recorded an impairment charge of $1.36 billion in the reported quarter, rose 3.2 per cent in extended trading. The company has benefited from a surge in spending on advanced data center architecture, designed to support the complex processing needs of generative AI. The GenAI boom has bumped up demand for Hewlett Packard's AI-optimized servers, which are powered by Nvidia processors and can run complex applications. For the quarter ended April 30, the company reported revenue of $7.63 billion, ahead of analysts' average estimate of $7.45 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. In the quarter, Hewlett Packard addressed the execution challenges that it experienced in the prior quarter, which enabled it to drive improved margin performance in the server business, CFO Marie Myers said during a post-earnings call. The company did not see a significant benefit from tariff-related demand pull-forward, she said. Adjusted profit per share for the second quarter was 38 cents, beating an estimate of 32 cents per share. Server revenue was up 5.7 per cent to $4.06 billion and revenue for the hybrid cloud segment grew 13 per cent to $1.45 billion. Hewlett Packard tightened its annual revenue forecast growth to be up 7 per cent to 9 per cent, compared to its prior forecast of 7 per cent to 11 per cent growth. "We continue to navigate a complex macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape and remain prepared to take additional action in the back half of the year to deliver against our fiscal 2025 outlook," Myers said. The company forecast third-quarter revenue between $8.2 billion and $8.5 billion, compared to an estimate of $8.17 billion.

Musk calls Trump's tax-cut and spending bill 'a disgusting abomination'

WASHINGTON: Elon Musk plunged into the congressional debate over President Donald Trump's sweeping tax and spending billon Tuesday (Jun 3), calling the measure a "disgusting abomination" that will increase the federal deficit in social media posts that hardline Republicans quickly embraced. "I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore," the billionaire Musk wrote in an X post. "This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination." He added: "Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it." The House of Representatives last month passed the bill by one vote after the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said the measure, which would extend the 2017 tax cuts that were Trump's main legislative accomplishment in his first term, would add US$3.8 trillion to the federal government's US$36.2 trillion in debt. The Senate, also controlled by Trump's Republicans, aims to pass the measure titled the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" in the next month, though senators are expected to revise the House-passed version of the bill. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Musk's calculations were in error. "It's very disappointing," Johnson told reporters. "With all due respect, my friend Elon is terribly wrong." But two House Republicans, Representatives Thomas Massie and Warren Davidson, who opposed the measure went to Musk's social platform X to endorse his message. "The Big Beautiful Tweet," Davidson said while reposting Musk's words. Senator Mike Lee, one of at least four hardline Republicans pushing for deeper spending cuts, also rallied to Musk in a tweet that called on party members to use the Trump bill and future spending measures to reduce the deficit. "We must commit now to doing so, as this is what voters justifiably expect, and indeed deserve, from the GOP Congress," the Utah Republican said on X. Trump appointed Musk, the world's richest person, to lead a government cost-cutting and efficiency drive, during which he upended several federal agencies but ultimately failed to deliver the massive savings he had sought. Musk left his formal role in the administration last week as his time as a special government employee with the Department of Government Efficiency came to an end. The Tesla CEO also criticized the bill in an interview the week before he left, saying it will undermine DOGE's work. Trump brushed off the criticism. Musk came out against it even more strongly on Tuesday. "It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt," Musk said on X. The White House dismissed the most recent attack. "Look, the president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill," spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said at a White House briefing. "It doesn't change the president's opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he's sticking to it." Thune, who aims to pass the bill through his chamber in the next month, said he disagreed with Musk. "My hope is that as he has an opportunity to further assess what this bill actually does, that he comes to a different conclusion," Thune, of South Dakota, told reporters. "But nevertheless, I mean, we have a job to do."
