Employees were already freaked out about AI — Amazon just proved them right

The once-hypothetical cuts are coming, whether employees are ready or not. On Tuesday, Amazon's CEO, Andy Jassy, confirmed the fears of many workers in the age of artificial intelligence: He said he expects the technology will lead to job cuts at the tech giant. In his memo, which was posted online, Jassy did not announce immediate layoffs. He said that, in the next few years, "efficiency gains" from AI would translate to a smaller corporate workforce. Marlo Lyons, a certified executive coach, told Business Insider that jobs will inevitably change — including outright disappearances. "So is your job at risk? Absolutely. If you don't get on board with AI, yes, absolutely, you're going to lose your job." Amazon is now one of the largest companies to explicitly state that AI will impact its employees' jobs. It's not all outright layoffs — at least not yet BI previously reported that roles that include tasks that AI can perform are disappearing from job boards faster than positions that have fewer tasks that AI can accomplish. Shopify's CEO said in April that, before hiring anyone new, employees must prove AI can't do the job better. Duolingo plans to phase out contractors and replace them with AI. And Salesforce's CEO, Marc Benioff, has said that the company might not hire engineers in 2025 because those already on the payroll are getting so much more done thanks to AI tools. The industry you're in matters. Office workers appear to be particularly at risk. In late May, Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, suggested AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs. Klarna's CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, said earlier this month that he expects the impact of AI on white-collar jobs to be so significant that it will lead to a recession. Christian Schneider, the CEO of New York-based startupfileAI, told BI that he's already seeing job losses in corners of the tech industry, and he expects AI to exacerbate the trend. "I'm totally expecting a tightening," he said. "I think when we look into tech layoffs, it's so apparent that something is changing." Melissa Swift, the founder and CEO of work consultancy Anthrome Insight, told BI that productivity hasn't always increased to the same degree as tech advances. It often "ticks up slowly, like a kiddie roller coaster going up the first big hill." Those who aren't keeping up risk being left behind. And refusing to acknowledge the risk doesn't make it go away, Lyons said. "So if you're redesigning the workplace, and how things are getting done — whether it's a workflow or structures of teams, or the same thing with AI — you can hold on with white knuckles, but it's still going to happen around you,"Lyons said. Of course, not all the jobs affected by advancements in AI will mean the workers filling them will be laid off. Jassy acknowledged in his statement that Amazon will "need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs." Schneider said some jobs will change so that typical back-office, rote tasks will fall to AI and allow more workers to take on people-facing roles. Or, officegoers once responsible for pulling and preparing data might now move to the end of the process to, for example, check the quality of the results AI produces. While some jobs will disappear and others will evolve, Schneider said, workers are often good at adapting. "Honestly, I wouldn't want to underestimate people's drive," he said.

Plains All American, Plains GP to sell NGL business to Keyera for $3.75B

Plains All American (PAA) and Plains GP Holdings (PAGP) announced that it has executed definitive agreements with Keyera pursuant to which Plains will sell substantially all of its NGL business to Keyera for a total cash consideration of approximately C$5.15B, or $3.75B. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, and is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. As a result of the transaction, Plains will divest its Canadian NGL business but will retain substantially all NGL assets in the United States and will also retain all crude oil assets in Canada. Proceeds from the transaction are expected to be approximately $3B net after: taxes; transaction expenses and a potential one-time special distribution. The estimated 35c per unit special distribution is intended to offset potential individual tax liabilities associated with the transaction and is subject to board approval, ultimate tax implications, and successful closing of the transaction. Proceeds from the transaction will be prioritized toward: bolt-on M&A to extend and expand the crude oil focused portfolio; capital structure optimization including potential repurchases of Series A and Series B Preferred units and common unit repurchases. Closing of this transaction is a taxable event that is expected to result in a flow through of taxable income to the holders of PAA common units and impact the taxability of distributions to the holders of PAGP Class A shares. The tax impact on each holder of PAA common units will vary based on their specific tax circumstances, including their individual ownership, previous passive loss limitations where applicable, tax basis and their holding period. We currently estimate that PAA will incur approximately $360M of entity-level taxes payable in Canada associated with the sale of the NGL business and the restructuring of our remaining Canadian crude assets. This is expected to generate a foreign tax credit for PAA common unitholders at close of the transaction that, along with utilization of passive activity loss carry forwards, if any, will offset a significant portion of the taxable gain passed through to individual unitholders. Amazon and Walmart (WMT) May Launch Their Own Stablecoins

Amazon (AMZN), Walmart (WMT), and Ant Group (BABA) are looking into launching their own stablecoins, which are digital currencies tied to traditional currencies like the U.S. dollar. According to The Wall Street Journal, retail giants Amazon and Walmart have been holding internal discussions about creating their own coins. Indeed, Amazon has been exploring blockchain since at least 2021, while Walmart first filed a patent in 2019 to develop a dollar-pegged coin aimed at unbanked customers. Ant Group, the fintech arm of Alibaba, appears to be further ahead, with Reuters reporting that its Singapore-based subsidiary is preparing to apply for stablecoin licenses in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Luxembourg. Confident Investing Starts Here: The motivation behind this push is largely financial. In fact, credit card transactions typically cost merchants 2–3% in fees. For companies like Amazon, which did over $447 billion in e-commerce revenue in 2024, that could amount to $9–$13 billion annually. Using a proprietary stablecoin instead could significantly reduce those fees. Stablecoins also simplify international payments by eliminating costly wire transfers and currency conversions. Additionally, companies that issue stablecoins typically hold reserve assets, such as government bonds, which can generate hundreds of millions of dollars in annual interest. Interestingly, industry experts told that companies like Amazon, Walmart, and Ant Group are likely further along than the public realizes, as they already control digital wallets and ecosystems large enough to support their own currencies. Still, challenges like refund systems, fraud controls, and regulatory compliance remain. Experts also noted that widespread adoption will depend on making stablecoins easy and intuitive to use. Which Stock Is the Better Buy? Turning to Wall Street, out of the stocks mentioned above, analysts think that BABA stock has the most room to run. In fact, BABA's average price target of $166 per share implies more than 44% upside potential. On the other hand, analysts expect the least from of $241.64 equates to a gain of 12.3%.
