The £346milion theme park that wanted to be the ‘English Disneyland' in the 1980s… but was never built

A THEME park that wanted to be the UK's version of Disneyland was nearly built in the 1980s.
The theme park, called WonderWorld, hoped to open in Corby in Northamptonshire.

In 1981, planning permission was granted for a the theme park to be built on a 1,000-acre site, around two miles from Corby.
Located at Priors Hall, the park was to be built on a disused quarry which was once linked to the town's former steelworks.
Group Five, who were due to be the developers, claimed that support from the local area including county authorities and the Commission for New Towns.
The attraction was to be modelled on Walt Disney World 's Epcot which opened in Orlando in 1982 and would include 13 themed villages built around a central bowl measuring 700 metres in diameter.
Six of the worlds would open in 1992 and were expected to draw in four million visitors annually.
The attraction would have featured high-tech rides, educational centres, themed restaurants, a conservation zone and several shopping areas.
There would have also been an open air concert hall designed to look like one of the Martian tripods from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds and rides designed by Monty Python's Terry Gilliam.
A brochure produced on the planned park suggested that it would be a "unique resort set in beautifully landscaped surroundings".
Later in 1985, one of the architects, Derek Walker, said: "The basic ingredients [for WonderWorld] are very simple: entertainment at the very highest level. It's participatory and it's incredibly educational.

"[WonderWorld] will offer the best of British design," according to the BBC.
In addition, botanist David Bellamy was involved in planning a mock safari and astronomer Sir Patrick Moore was set to contribute an observatory.
There would also have been a 10,000-seat stadium for sports.
A family resort with seven hotels initially, an 18-hole golf course and 100 holiday villas were due to be a part of the destination too.
The overall ambition was to launch a new leisure industry built around "British heritage, folklore, science and innovation", which was particular supported following the closure of the nearby steelworks in 1980.

The project was estimated to cost £346million in total and aimed for an initial opening in 1985.
However, due to rising costs, planning delays and difficultly securing long-term funding meant that some of the backers pulled out.
Eventually the plans faded into obscurity and the only parts of the attraction that were built were a large WonderWorld sign and a small wooden cabin.
Today, the site is home to more than 1,000 houses and here are plans to build around 5,000 more in the future.
A £2.5billion 'UK Disneyland' theme park was also announced in 2012, before being scrapped - and images were released of what it could have looked like.
However, there is a Universal theme park coming to the UK in the next decade.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's new royal title plan 'utterly bewilders' palace insiders

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Sources within Buckingham Palace have allegedly been left "utterly bewildered" by claims that Prince Harry intends to secure royal titles for his offspring, Archie and Lilibet, so they can choose their own path in regards to royal duties as they mature. A royal insider revealed to the Daily Mail's Richard Eden: "I find this very hard to understand. Harry and Meghan apparently found official duties and life within the Royal Family unbearable, yet they want this for their children. It doesn't make sense." After ceasing to fulfil royal responsibilities, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle withdrew from using their HRH titles, following an arrangement with the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2020. There are whispers that the hesitancy from certain officials about granting passports for Archie and Lilibet, potentially including their HRH titles, contributed to a delay in the process. The Guardian cited a royal source stating: "The King hadn't wanted Archie and Lili to carry the titles, most of all the HRH, and the British passports, once created, would be the first and perhaps the only legal proof of their names." An "exasperated" Harry is said to have voiced his frustration to his uncle, Earl Spencer, feeling that passport office officials were intentionally impeding him, and he pondered whether to adopt his mother's maiden name – Spencer – rather than Sussex. (Image: Getty Images for Global Citizen) Royal commentators are left puzzled by Harry and Meghan's insistence on retaining the option for their children to use their HRH titles, despite the couple's claims of suffering greatly. At the time they stepped back from royal duties, Harry expressed: "Part of this job is putting on a brave face but, for me and my wife, there is a lot of stuff that hurts, especially when the majority of it is untrue." The Sussexes have repeatedly voiced their struggles with the relentless public attention. During the Sussexes' controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey, which significantly damaged their relationship with the Royal Family, Meghan revealed the immense pressure of royal life led her to a point where she "just didn't want to be alive any more". Yet, there's widespread conjecture that their motives may extend beyond Archie and Lilibet's future prospects. (Image: PA) Richard Eden suggests that keeping the children's HRH titles might signal a desire to reconcile, describing it as "the biggest hint yet that they're hoping to mend fences". Meghan discussed potential business ventures with her daughter, Princess Lilibet, on Tina Knowles' podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder. Eden speculated: "I wonder, would it perhaps be better for business if Lili were an American princess in line for a dramatic return to the Royal Family?". Yorkshire Live has contacted representatives for both Buckingham Palace and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but is yet to receive a response.

Harry and Meghan sent 'significant' Trooping the Colour message

Trooping the Colour will take place tomorrow (Saturday, June 14), but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as in previous years, will not be in attendance at the celebrations The Royal Family sent a "significant" message to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Trooping the Colour several years ago. The parade will take place tomorrow (Saturday, June 14) and is expected to draw 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians as well as crowds of adoring royal fans. The event will take place between Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards Parade in London, where regiments of the Household Division will mark King Charles ' official birthday. Members of the Firm will also make a long-anticipated balcony appearance as they do every year for the RAF flypast. In 2023, "for the first time in his life", Prince Harry was not invited to attend and, with only working royals expected to put in an appearance at this year's Trooping the Colour, it's believed there the King's youngest son and daughter-in-law will be notably absent once again. ‌ Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, who is currently fifth in the line of succession to the British throne, famously stepped down from official duties alongside his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex in January 2020. ‌ Since then, there has been much speculation ahead of all official royal events as to whether the couple will be in attendance. Richard Eden, palace Confidential broadcaster and diary columnist at Daily Mail, said in a television appearance in 2023:"[This is] the first year of his life that Harry hasn't been invited at all. With Harry and Meghan, we've always had a sort of 'will they, won't they' before every big royal occasion. "Well, it seems like the palace has tackled this this time by just not inviting them at all. So, you know, it's significant. "When Harry and Meghan quit royal duties, I think officials were very keen to stress that they would still be invited to occasions such as Trooping the Colour so the fact they haven't been invited is very significant." A snippet of the interview was shared on the popular social media platform TikTok, where Royal enthusiasts were keen to share their thoughts. One person claimed: "Easier not to invite... too many demands and stipulations" while another said: "Tired of headlines WILL THEY COME? Now we don't have to wonder! Great decision, Palace!!" ‌ A third said: "First time for everything" while someone else theorised: "I don't think he would attend anyway." Another person commented: "Which part don't you people understand? [They're] not working royals and they walked out of the circus. Leave them alone, it's not like they were gonna come [either]." It has not been confirmed as yet by Buckingham Palace which royals will appear on the balcony for the RAF flypast - a much loved element of Trooping the Colour - but it's expected that only working royals will be in attendance, which would rule Harry and Meghan out. Prince Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, have been together for nine years. The couple said they were set up with one another on a blind date by a mutual friend in July of 2016. Their relationship was made public in November of that year, and their engagement was confirmed 12 months later on November 27, 2017 by King Charles III, who was then the Prince of Wales. They were married on Saturday, May 19 2018 in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. The couple share two children together, Prince Archie Harrison and Princess Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.
