Wiegman disappointed by Earps' shock England retirement

CNA29-05-2025

LONDON : England women's coach Sarina Wiegman said she was sad and disappointed by experienced goalkeeper Mary Earps' decision to retire from international football five weeks before the European Championship.
The 32-year-old Paris St Germain keeper, who helped England win the 2022 Euro title and finisher runners-up at the 2023 World Cup, made the shock announcement on Tuesday, calling it a new era for England.
"I want her in my team," Wiegman told reporters on Thursday, on the eve of their Nations League game against Portugal at Wembley.
"She has done such a great job for England. She has made a massive difference and we have had an incredible journey so far and I really cherish that.
"There have been a couple of conversations which I don't want to share here because they are between us. It's hard and it's hard for her at the same time."
Chelsea's Hannah Hampton had recently emerged as a strong contender to be England's starting goalkeeper, with Wiegman saying recently she was ahead of Earps.
"We are a team and we want to win and Mary in that team gives us a better chance of winning - I know that to be true," England captain Leah Williamson said.
"She is a leader. She has got experience," she added. "To lose her leaves a gap there but we have had that happen before and players have to step up and show what they are made of.
Chelsea defender Millie Bright withdrew this week from the two Nations League games saying she was "mentally and physically" at her limit and needed a break.
"She has to take care of herself," Wiegman said of Bright's absence. "We are in conversation. We will stay in contact and I hope she feels better soon but I don't know that yet at the moment."
England also lost Tottenham Hotspur defender Ella Morris to a knee ligament injury while Ella Toone and Alessia Russo will miss Friday's game.
Chelsea striker Lauren James, who has not played since April 4 due to a hamstring injury, is on course to be fit for England's European title defence.
"She is in a good place in rehab," Wiegman said. "She has ticked the boxes she needs to tick and we are progressing her. We hope she keeps moving forward and can join the team later on."
England play Spain in the Nations League in Barcelona on Tuesday. Wiegman will announce her Euro squad on June 5 and the tournament in Switzerland starts on July 2.

India test captain Gill ready to lead in his own way

India's new test captain Shubman Gill knows he has big shoes to fill after the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but he wants to develop his own style of leadership, he said on Thursday. Rohit and Kohli, former skippers and batting mainstays of the team, both quit test cricket weeks before the start of India's five-test series in England. Gill, 25, impressed as captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans, leading them to the playoffs. "The pressure comes with every tour. The two big players have served us for so long, it is not easy to fill that space," Gill told a news conference in Mumbai. "My style of captaincy will be my own, it will develop with experience. I like to communicate with the players. I would try to get them comfortable with their strengths and weaknesses. The players should feel secure, only then will they perform well." Gill was picked as captain ahead of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in two recent tests in Australia. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar cited workload management concerns over the 31-year-old Bumrah who will not play all five tests in England. "We haven't taken the call over which three games (Bumrah is) going to play," India head coach Gautam Gambhir said. "We are going to have a discussion with him and a lot will depend on the results of the series as well, where the series is heading." At least 11 people died and 47 were injured on Wednesday in a crowd surge outside IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru's home stadium during celebrations of their maiden title. "My heart goes out to the people who lost their lives," Gambhir said. "We are all equally responsible for this. Every life matters. If we are not ready to hold a road show, we should not do that."

Former Arsenal forward jailed in UK on cannabis smuggling charge

LONDON : Former Arsenal and Ipswich Town forward Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was on Thursday jailed for four years for orchestrating the smuggling of 60 kg of cannabis into Britain's Stansted Airport. The 34-year-old, who was released by Scottish second division club Greenock Morton after being charged last year, pleaded guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court last month. Britain's National Crime Agency previously said Emmanuel-Thomas had recruited his girlfriend and another woman to travel to Thailand, where Emmanuel-Thomas briefly played in 2019, to collect the cannabis and smuggle it to Britain. The two women were also charged with smuggling cannabis but the prosecution offered no evidence against them and the charges were dropped on Wednesday, the NCA added. Emmanuel-Thomas sat in the dock as Judge Alexander Mills told him: "Your transition from professional footballer to criminal represents a substantial fall from grace, one that effectively ends the only career path that you have ever known." He will serve 40 per cent of that sentence in custody before he is released on licence. Prosecutor David Josse said the 60 kg of cannabis had a street value of approximately 600,000 pounds (roughly $816,000) and a wholesale value of around 250,000 pounds, though Emmanuel-Thomas was paid 5,000 pounds for his involvement.

Queen's Club women's tournament to offer equal prize money by 2029

Women's players will receive equal prize money to their male counterparts for competing at Queen's Club and Eastbourne by 2029, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) said on Thursday. The women's event will return to the Queen's Club Championships this year for the first time in over half a century. The prize money for the women's event will be $1.415m, the highest for a WTA 500 event of its draw size on the tour, but still less than half of the men's prize money of 2.5 million euros ($2.87 million). In a statement, the LTA said it would "fully close the gap between WTA and ATP prize money at these events no later than 2029. "This year the WTA 500 prize money at the (Queen's Club) Championships will rise to a record $1.415m... "Whilst the WTA 250 prize money at the Eastbourne Open will rise to $389,000 – making this the highest paying WTA 250 event anywhere on the tour." The Queen's Club women's event will be held in the first week of the grasscourt season from June 9-15 and will feature Australian Open champion Madison Keys, former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina and 2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu. The WTA 250 event in Eastbourne will take place from June 23-28, in the week before Wimbledon. "We are making significant increases this year to the women's prize money at Queen's and Eastbourne and want to achieve equal prize money as soon as possible," LTA chief executive Scott Lloyd said in a statement. "The LTA is committed to growing women's tennis, both at professional and grass-roots level and this move is an important part of that commitment." On Thursday, Japanese four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and world number three Jessica Pegula of the United States withdrew from the Queen's Club Championships. ($1 = 0.8701 euros)
