Westover Auto Salvage first in western Mass. to join SHiFT vehicle retirement program

Yahoo15-05-2025

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – Westover Auto Salvage has become the first automotive recycling facility in western Massachusetts to partner with the SHiFT Vehicle Retirement Initiative.
SHiFT is a national program aimed at removing End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) from roadways and supporting environmentally responsible vehicle dismantling.
The Belchertown-based company announced the milestone this week, marking a significant step forward in efforts to reduce automotive-related emissions and promote a circular economy in the region. The partnership requires participating recyclers to commit to fully retiring a vehicle's engine once it enters the SHiFT program, ensuring that high-emission, low-efficiency vehicles are permanently removed from circulation.
'At facilities like ours, we take a scientific approach to automotive recycling and a scalpel to the remains of retired vehicles to ensure as much of the ELV is recycled as possible,' said Brian Bachand, CEO of Westover Auto Salvage.
To celebrate the partnership, Westover will host an exclusive demonstration showcasing the environmentally conscious dismantling of a retired Toyota Tacoma — the first vehicle the company received through SHiFT. The event will offer a behind-the-scenes look at how ELVs are safely and scientifically depolluted, stripped for parts, and responsibly recycled.
Unlike traditional salvage operations, Westover employs a meticulous, environmentally sound approach to vehicle dismantling, minimizing waste and maximizing recyclable output. The facility is also one of just three in Massachusetts to hold a High Voltage Vehicle Certification, authorizing it to handle, depollute, and dismantle electric and hybrid vehicle batteries — a crucial capability as the transportation sector increasingly shifts toward cleaner energy.
The SHiFT initiative aligns with growing efforts nationwide to combat climate change by reducing reliance on outdated vehicles that contribute to pollution and inefficient fuel consumption.

Conduit, Braza Group Debut Stablecoin Forex Swaps for Cross-Border Payments in Brazil

Conduit, a stablecoin-focused cross-border payments provider, said on Thursday it has teamed up with Brazil's Braza Group for real-time foreign exchange (FX) swaps between the Brazilian real and major foreign currencies using stablecoins. The service allows users to convert Brazilian real to U.S. dollars or euros and settle transactions in minutes with stablecoins —a sharp departure from the traditional FX infrastructure, where settlement can take up to three days, according to the press release. Braza, which owns Brazil's largest FX bank and processed $67 billion in transactions last year, launched its own real-pegged stablecoin BBRL on XRP Ledger earlier this year. Braza will mint BBRL tokens when a payment originates in Brazil. Conduit then swaps the BBRL for dollar- or euro-pegged stablecoins and delivers the funds to the recipient's bank or wallet abroad. Stablecoins—cryptocurrencies whose values are typically pegged to fiat currencies—have emerged as one of crypto's fastest-growing sectors. Their use in cross-border payments and remittances is expanding rapidly, particularly in developing markets where traditional banking channels can be costly or unreliable. Global bank Citi recently projected the sector could grow from $250 billion to $1.6 trillion by 2030. Meanwhile, U.S. lawmakers are also pushing forward stablecoin-specific regulation, encouraging businesses and financial institutions to explore ways to use stablecoins for payments. "Creating seamless on-ramps between fiat and digital currencies, together with on-chain stablecoin FX swaps, has the potential to completely transform how cross border payments are made,' said Conduit CEO Kirill Gertman. Victoria's Secret exceeds Q1 FY25 expectations

US-based fashion and beauty retailer Victoria's Secret has seen its sales and operating income in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025 surpassing expectations and reiterated its full-year sales forecast. The company posted net sales of $1.35bn, which aligns with the upper end of the company's guidance range and remained flat year-on-year (YoY). Despite this steady performance, the company experienced a 1% decline in total comparable sales during the same period. The retailer reported an operating income of $20m for Q1 2025, a decrease from the $26m reported in Q1 of the previous year. Victoria's Secret also posted a net loss of $2m - an improvement compared to its net loss of $4m in Q1 2024. Despite the cyber incident that took place in May, Victoria's Secret did not experience significant operational disruptions in Q1. However, the company has faced, and may continue to face, costs and financial consequences associated with the incident. These could adversely affect its financial outcomes, potentially impacting results for Q2 of fiscal 2025. The release of the company's first-quarter earnings was postponed due to a security incident that disrupted its information technology systems. Victoria's Secret chief financial officer Scott Sekella stated: 'Though we recognise the macro environment is uncertain, we will continue to be disciplined in controlling costs and will remain agile, reading and reacting to what the customer is telling us to ensure we are building upon our solid foundation and realising the full potential of our globally recognised brands.' In Q2 2025, Victoria's Secret forecasts net sales between $1.38bn and $1.41bn - a slight decrease from the $1.417bn recorded in the Q2 2024. The company anticipates adjusted operating income for Q2 to be between $15m and $35m, with adjusted net income per diluted share estimated to fall between $0 and $0.15. Victoria's Secret is maintaining its forecasted net sales range of $6.2bn to $6.3bn for the full year of 2025. However, the company has adjusted its expected operating income, now anticipating it to be between $270m and $320m, down from the previously projected range of $300m to $350m. This revision takes into account an updated estimated net tariff impact of approximately $50m for the fiscal year. Victoria's Secret CEO Hillary Super stated: 'I am pleased with the strength the business demonstrated during the March and April timeframe, which included continued momentum in our powerhouse beauty business, ongoing strength in PINK apparel, and newness in sport and swim as we reclaim our position as a full lifestyle brand.' Corti launches new FactsR system for clinical consultations

Healthcare technology company Corti has introduced FactsR, a real-time agentic reasoning system designed for clinical consultations. This system aims to lessen 'note bloat' driven by general-purpose AI by 65%, ensuring that medical records remain precise and relevant to the actual clinical conversation. FactsR stands out from traditional large language model (LLM) pipelines adapted for healthcare by utilising Corti's recursive fact-first reasoning loop. By minimising the need for post-visit edits and transforming passive transcripts into active clinical intelligence, FactsR paves the way for real-time decision support directly at the point of care. Offered as a modular API, the system enables developers to integrate clinical-grade intelligence into healthcare applications, fostering safer AI experiences. It allows for the creation of AI that delivers concise and accurate results, which clinicians can interact with during consultations. FactsR operates in four key areas. Firstly, it listens and extracts structured clinical facts in real-time, such as symptoms and medications, during the consultation. Secondly, each fact is vetted and refined through a specialised AI-driven feedback loop, ensuring accuracy and consistency. Later on, clinicians have the opportunity to review and adjust the facts, maintaining control and complementing clinical judgement. Lastly, the system generates electronic health record (EHR)-ready notes that are concise and free from irrelevant content, leading to reduced screen time and improved focus on the patient. chief technology officer and co-founder Lars Maaløesaid: 'By breaking conversations into structured clinical facts and validating each one through recursive reasoning, FactsR elevates ambient documentation into a foundation for real-time clinical intelligence. 'When AI can listen, understand, and reason with medical context, it becomes more than a scribe - it becomes a trusted collaborator. With a developer-friendly API, we're enabling any healthtech company to embed this capability directly into their applications - safely, scalably, and in minutes.' In October 2024, Corti announced a collaboration with US-based Tanner Health and its subsidiary Healthliant Ventures.
