'Disastrous': Swans rocked by Errol Gulden blow amid fresh pre-season carnage
Sydney Swans superstar Errol Gulden could become the latest player ruled out for the start of the AFL season after a brutal incident in Friday night's pre-season game against the Gold Coast Suns. Gulden was sent to hospital for scans on his ankle after hurting it during a tackle that saw it twisted back awkwardly in the early exchanges against the Suns.
It was thought at the time that the dual All-Australian had suffered a syndesmosis injury that could potentially rule him out for several weeks. The Swans will now nervously await the results of the scan and hope the injury is not too serious but Gulden's availability for next Friday night's Opening Round match against Hawthorn at the SCG is in serious doubt.
On a night of carnage for both sides, Gold Coast players Mac Andrew (sternum), Charlie Ballard (ankle), David Swallow (knee) and Lachie Weller (hamstring) were also taken out of the game that Sydney won 12.12 (84) to 8.15 (63). Suns star Andrew did not even make it through two minutes of action after being forced from the field in the wake of a nasty collision with Sydney's Taylor Adams in the first marking contest of the match.
Friday night's carnage came hot on the heels of other concerning injuries for Port Adelaide superstar Zak Butters and Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli, who are both set to be sidelined for around six weeks. Port Adelaide confirmed Butters would be sidelined after knee surgery, while Bontempelli's injury was worse than first thought after it was revealed he'd suffered a 'complex' calf complaint.
The Swans will be keeping their fingers crossed for Gulden ahead of their season-opener at home to the Hawks on Friday night, but Swans assistant coach Mark McVeigh admitted the incident 'didn't look good' after it was described as 'disastrous' for Sydney on Fox Footy's coverage. "Obviously when a player comes off like that, your concerns are heightened," McVeigh said. "It didn't look good, but we have to wait on the scan results."

The spate of injuries across many of the AFL clubs in pre-season has sparked concerns around whether the schedule has contributed to more injuries than usual. Suns coach Damien Hardwick said the structure of pre-season games needs to be looked at after his side were left decimated ahead of their own Opening Round showdown against Essendon next Saturday.

"We're not quite sure how many bullets we've dodged," Hardwick told Fox Footy after the game. "It was a bit of a night of carnage, unfortunately, for us - it's hard to sit there and take a little bit out of the game when you're trying to put pieces of the puzzle together. A tough night."

The Suns coach also pointed out that the Friday night game on the Gold Coast meant Sydney would not be able to fly back home after the game - which is far from ideal with their season kicking off in less than a week. "We have to get a a bit better and it's hard, because round zero comes in and then some sides have two weeks off," the Suns coach said.
"We need to put our heads together and figure out what we can do, and get a little bit tighter. Sydney can't get home tonight and they play next Friday, they're stuck here. We just have to get this scheduling better. They have one job, the AFL, let's get it sorted out." Despite the setback for Gulden, Sydney's assistant coach McVeigh said they were fairly happy with the final pre-season hit-out before the 2025 campaign gets underway.
The Swans are set to welcome back stars Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner and Dane Rampe for next week's opener after fielding an undermanned side on Friday night. Tom McCartin booted four goals in one major highlight, with the Swans assistant revealing he could go back to his usiual role as a key defender if that's what the team needs. "That might swap week-to-week, we don't know," McVeigh said. "I don't think we're entirely settled on where he'll play."

Two Teams Emerge as ‘Most Likely' to Land Kevin Durant in Trade
Two Teams Emerge as 'Most Likely' to Land Kevin Durant in Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Phoenix Suns' offseason has been a busy one after falling short of the NBA Playoffs with a 36-46 record. The Suns finished as the No. 11 seed in the Western Conference a year after getting swept out of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Advertisement Shortly after the season's conclusion, the Suns announced they were parting ways with head coach Mike Budenholzer. More changes followed quickly, as the Suns moved James Jones into a senior advisory role and inserted Brian Gregory as general manager. Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant dunks against Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul Streicher-Imagn Images Two teams emerge as "most likely" to land Kevin Durant Brian Gregory is someone that Mat Ishbia trusts deeply, going back to their days at Minnesota State when Ishbia was a player and Gregory an assistant coach. One of his first orders of business will likely be how to navigate the situation with Kevin Durant. Rumors were circulating at the trade deadline that the Suns were looking to move him, but no such deal was ever made. Instead, they made one more run at trying to sneak into the NBA Play-In Tournament, but those hopes were dashed when Durant suffered an ankle injury. Advertisement According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, two teams stand out as the most likely destination for Durant. 'Things are obviously fluid at this stage, but the two teams most frequently cited as potential landing spots for Durant entering Saturday's business, league sources say, were Minnesota and Miami,' Fischer wrote. The Suns will likely do everything they can to appease Durant's wishes, but since he doesn't have a no-trade clause in his contract, it's ultimately up to the Suns as to which team they send him to. They're not in a position to turn down a better trade package just to make Durant happy on his way out the door. Advertisement Miami doesn't have much to offer Phoenix, and the friendship between Durant and Anthony Edwards following their participation for Team USA is noteworthy. The Suns could move Durant sooner rather than later, especially if the deal involves first-round picks with the 2025 NBA Draft less than two weeks away. Kevin Durant and Anthony Edwards' Possible Superteam Gets a Major Update
Kevin Durant and Anthony Edwards' Possible Superteam Gets a Major Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Phoenix Suns power forward Kevin Durant is one of this off-season's hottest commodities among NBA teams looking to add that missing piece to their roster. Recent reports suggest the star's most likely destinations include the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat and Houston Rockets, according to Yahoo Sports. Advertisement On Saturday morning's episode of "The Kevin O'Connor Show," the host revealed details about the Phoenix's approach to Durant. "I've heard personally from sources that I've talked to that the Suns are being really, really, really aggressive trying to get this done," he reported. "They want to get it done sooner than later. It's my understanding the Suns want some clarity of what their draft night is going to look like." Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant brings the ball up as Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards defends him at Target Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images O'Connor later discussed the other side of the trade, disclosing Minnesota's true likelihood to land the superstar this offseason. "Minnesota before July 1 is a second apron team. So, they can't aggregate salaries until July 1. So, if you're talking Minnesota, it's incredibly difficult to put a [KD] deal together, which is why with Phoenix rushing things here, I don't think it's Minnesota,' O'Connor said. Advertisement Durant shows no signs of slowing down, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists this season in 62 games played. Despite his stat lines, the Suns missed the playoffs after being swept in the first round in 2024. As Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Thursday, "Which team believes they're a Kevin Durant away from winning a championship, that's what this could come down to." With recent speculation, a team may swing on a Durant deal in the coming weeks. Related: Stephen A. Francisco Lindor's stunning All-Star drought could finally end — and it's about to get a big first clue
Access the Mets beat like never before Don't miss Mike Puma's text messages from Queens and beyond — he's giving Sports+ subscribers the inside buzz on the Mets. Sign up Now Finding out Francisco Lindor has never been an All-Star as a Met is not exactly like the day you learn there is no Tooth Fairy, but it does come with a 'Wait! What?' reaction. It feels nearly impossible to believe that a potentially Cooperstown-bound player in his prime who over the past three seasons has finished no worse than top nine for NL MVP, won two shortstop Silver Sluggers and plays in a huge market with a big personality had not over his first four Mets seasons gained Midsummer Classic entry. 'You have got to have a good first half and I haven't had a good All-Star-type first half with the Mets, where people feel like I deserve to be an All-Star,' Lindor said. 3 Francisco Lindor is pictured during the Mets' game against the Nationals on June 12. Jason Szenes for the NY Post This velvet rope seems like it is going to fall. Lindor, a four-time All-Star with Cleveland, has never been better positioned to find the alchemy of strong first half/popularity contest that goes into gaining an All-Star spot.
