Kroef is coming off a win at Teretonga Park Raceway and currently places second with 295 points.
The organisers said the competition for the lower placings would also see some serious action.
Several drivers, including Greg Kroef and Phill Ross, who share third place in the points, as well as Daniel Ludlam, Simon Ussher and Blair Gribble-Bowring, could all make it on to the podium this weekend.
Gribble-Bowring, a former drift racer, really found his groove this season as he beat Chris Pither's track record at Timaru.
Meanwhile, Ross notched up a race win, as well as a second and two third placings, and Ludlam had a hard-fought third place at Teretonga.
New to the series is former D1NZ racer Cam Vernon, who's purchased a Ford FG ute recently imported from Australia.
Other racers set to battle it out on the track include Dave Robb, who will give one of David 'Shaggy' Lowe's Ford Falcon BFs a run, newcomer Brad Wenzlick, who will be racing Lowe's other Falcon BF, Tyler Ward, and Stu Monteith, who is back in the #99 Holden after stand-in driver Jake Stoneman notched up two impressive podiums in the ute at Teretonga.
Racing, including qualifying events for the various classes, will start on Saturday at 8.30am, but the UDC V8 Utes season finale kicks off Sunday with a 15-minute qualifying session.

Driver, Graeme Cameron of Rakaia, is not fazed by the other 16 models which include a Dodge Demon and a Porsche 911. There is also a VW Golf – but more about that later. Cameron has only had his Chevy for two months. It has a 253 Holden V8 under the hood, with 4200cc. It was bought by auction from a Waikato owner when Cameron attended the Whangamata Beach Hop, in the Coromandel Peninsula, in March. It was originally restored by mechanic Phil Hands of Ashburton, Cameron said. And now it had returned to Mid Canterbury. Cameron said he had owned a similar model but sold it about five years ago. He always regretted it. There were 26 hot rods in the auction, he said. ''I had a look, put in a bid, and the rest is history.'' It has 35,000km on the clock; just over 1000km were added driving it home. It was a 16-hour journey and cost Cameron $350 in fuel. Now at its new home, it will be a hobby car. Cameron also has a 2004 Holden Commodore SS, and a 1968 Vauxhall Viva GT racing car which he runs at Levels in Timaru and Ruapuna in Christchurch. He knows speed. PHOTO: TONI WILLIAMS Cameron estimates the Chevy could have a top speed of 180 – 200km/h. But he did not have time to check the speedometre during his three runs. He saved his best run till last. His standing quarter mile time was 17.048seconds. The winning run was by Marco Verscoot driving a … you guessed it – that VW Golf. He did it in a time of 10.639seconds in his first run of the day. His first three runs were all under 11 seconds. In second place was Ross Forsyth driving a Nissan GTR with a time of 11.025, and third was Bruce Williams in a Porsche 911 in 11.585 seconds.

1978 Ford Capri 3.0i Group 1

Mention the words 'Ford' and 'touring car', and most enthusiasts will likely think of the Falcon, Sierra or Escort. Few Kiwi fans recall the Ford Capri, the stylish coupe that some consider made Ford sexy during its tenure. It enjoyed a motorsport career that lasted the majority of its 18-year production run. Originally homologated as a (relatively disastrous) 2.0-litre Group 1 car, it would be developed into a feisty V6 battler. First came the 2.6-litre in 1971, followed by the BMW-battling RS3100. Come 1977 and the Capri 3.0S debuted in Group 1 form. Compared with the previous Capri homologation specials, these were mild. Group 1 regulations were based around series production cars. Ford's presence in the British Saloon Car Championship (BSCC) was spearheaded by the Capri. Gordon Spice would become synonymous with the Group 1 Ford Capri, winning 27 races and scoring six class victories between 1975 and 1980. Five of these were at the wheel of the Capri 3.0S, and four as a team owner. But he never won an outright championship thanks to the way the points were awarded. However, in 1978, Spice would take one of his (and the Capri's) most famous victories. He stood atop the podium at Spa after a gruelling 24 hours, sharing his Belga-sponsored Capri with Teddy Pillette. This car, built by CC Racing Developments, bears the chassis number CC-5. Headed by Dave Cook and Pete Clark, CC Racing Developments screwed together arguably the most competitive Capri 3.0S of the period. From 1977 through to 1982, they engineered between 20 and 25 cars. Most were destined for England. But Europe also provided a market for the CC Capris, quite likely off the back of the Spa successes. The recipe for these cars was fairly simple, owing largely to Group 1 regulations. These dictated a production block, in this instance a 3.0 litre Essex V6. While the showroom version was hardly a performance unit, common opinion suggests that these engines were pumping out around 250-270hp. It's worth mentioning they also had to run induction consistent with the production car. In this instance, a two-barrel Weber carburettor, rendering that power level all the more impressive. The car's Type 5 four-speed gearbox was equipped with a Hewland gearset. An LSD was installed on the rear axle. Suspension allowed more freedom. Adjustable platform front struts with spherical bearing top hats, and a modified leaf-sprung rear ensured trueness to production layout. Appropriate anti-roll bars were installed to retain a degree of body control, and the result was a low-slung stance that only improved the Mk3 Capri's svelte lines. Key to the aesthetic were the 13-inch wheels. The production car rolled on 13s, ergo, so must the race car, albeit wider and shod in competition rubber. These wheels covered an RS3100-sourced vented front rotor grasped by Girling 16 calipers. At the rear, a rudimentary pair of drums. The Spa 24 hour car gained a hefty tank bolted into the rear and quick-fill fuel caps neatly installed under an OEM flap. The flanks saw the installation of lights, to ensure the race numbers were visible in the pitch-black Belgian night. But otherwise, it's a straightforward, competitive Group 1 Capri. The story of CC5 didn't end with its 1978 Spa win, however. As evidenced by the original sticker on the centre switch console, it'd run in England and Europe through until 1981. Drivers like Andy Rouse graced the interior – by all accounts, the car has done a lot of racing. As the 1982 season dawned, so too did the Rover SD1. This marked the competitive end for the Capri, but instead of being mothballed, CC5 was spirited over to Asia alongside its stablemate CC7. The car would be raced at the Macau GP that year, without any notable success, and sold. CC5's contemporary motorsport career would wind up in 1986. At this point the car was acquired by a Manxman named Barry Forth. An ex-motorcycle road racer, Forth operated a business named 'Road and Track Performance.' Catering to a wealthy Asian client base, the company specialised in motorsport preparation but, for whatever reason, the Capri was acquired as part of a deal, then mothballed. Forth would eventually find his way to New Zealand, settling in Canterbury, and bringing a container or two with him. In one of those was the Capri, which would languish in captivity for some time before well-known Christchurch restoration specialist, Gary Wilkinson, came into the picture. While at the Forth residence completing a bit of auto electrical wizardry, Wilkinson tells a story of Capri discovery. A chance glimpse through the open door of the container revealed the unmistakable Mk3 Capri silhouette. The real kicker though? The 'Gordon Spice Racing' sunstrip adorning the front screen. The car wore a fairly plain white coat of paint beneath a thick coat of dust. As a self-diagnosed Ford fanatic, Wilkinson couldn't help but delve further. Closer investigation revealed the Essex V6 between the front struts. The tag in particular caught his eye, bearing the characters 'CC5.' This was where it was left, with Wilkinson finishing up his job and heading back to base where his research would begin. A while later, a deal was made, and Wilkinson pumped up the tyres and rolled CC5 onto a trailer in May of 2018. He recalls his excitement at his initial discovery of the dual fuel fillers and the presence of the 1981 RAC 'advertising permit' stickers. Despite the typical chequered history and neglect that comes with old racing cars, the Capri was complete and authentic. Only the absence of the original Minilite wheels was noted, hardly much of a concern. It'd be 18 months until work would begin on the car. Allan Scott, an ex-Walkinshaw engine development guru, assisted Wilkinson in making the right connections to verify authenticity and restore the car in a manner befitting its provenance. Wilkinson's modus operandi when it comes to restoration is key to the end result. As he says, 'the devil is in the detail,' and it's not always about things being returned to better than new order. Race hardware was never 'perfect,' even in its heyday. Aesthetically, Wilkinson has been careful to retain a degree of original patina. The aforementioned center switch panel wears its age with pride. A trio of Smith's gauges in the dash display decades of telltale readings. The leather of the 'RS' emblazoned steering wheel evokes close-quartered racing in each of its cracks and nicks. The engine and 'box are also original to the car, built in period by Neil Brown Engineering, a company still operating to this day. In the pursuit of power, Wilkinson experimented with some modern Holley carbs. But the original Weber left the engine builder and the dyno operator speechless. A forensic examination showed the carb had some bespoke modifications, an indication that in 1978 they knew exactly what they were doing. Within the rules? Who knows, but perhaps a clue as to how they got those Capris performing so well. Overall, Wilkinson doesn't deem the restoration as being too difficult. Often, the tricky bit is sourcing components, which were generally discarded as the race car evolved. The originality of the Ford Capri meant that, by and large, refurbishment of existing components was the order of the day. Even after being stripped to a bare shell, it revealed an excellent base with virtually no rust. Upon confirming the car's provenance with Dave Cook, Wilkinson learned that the team put around 400 hours into each shell. Every two inches, the seams are hand brazed for stiffness. It did however show signs of a repair in the front left. It's documented that in hour 17 or 18 of that 1978 Spa 24 hour race, Spice nailed the armco and lost his two and a half lap lead. The team would repair the damage, install a new strut, and absolutely send it to the finish. Pilette and Spice would peg back the leading BMW and take that historic win. Wilkinson makes no bones that he's proud the car is presented 'as it ran' in period. No special upgrades or concession to modern trends. 'Just how it was' is his summation. After a season competing among the Historic Touring Cars NZ grid, Wilkinson made the call to put the car up for sale. With such extensive provenance in the UK and Europe, keeping the car on Kiwi soil was always going to be a long shot. The Ford Capri has since left our shores, landing in England. Its next track outing is fitting; competing in the Gordon Spice Trophy race. It's a new addition to the Goodwood Members Meeting, aimed at contemporary and period Group 1 specification touring cars. It's a full circle moment for the Capri, a genuine Gordon Spice machine racing for a trophy bearing the original racer's name. And it's something Wilkinson can be immensely proud of.

2025 BYD Shark 6 Premium Review

The BYD Shark 6 has officially arrived and is off to a flying sales start. It's not easy establishing a new nameplate, but the Shark 6, with 539 delivered, has elevated BYD up the best sellers list. The nameplate now features in the top ten, ahead of Hyundai and GWM. It is enjoying its honeymoon period but the interest is there from people who actually buy new utes. On the flipside, there are many Shark 6 doubters lurking in the murky social media spaces with various opinions on its perceived lack of capability. Personally, I avoid the area. There is a reason the US Surgeon General has called for warning labels on social media platforms similar to those on cigarette boxes. He says that social media is a contributing factor in the mental health crisis, especially amongst teens. It's as toxic as tobacco, but the dopamine hit, similar to nicotine, hooks people in. It's here that the uninformed like to fester and taunt. Anyhow, it's also here you'll find those that say a ute that can't tow 3.5 tonnes is useless. Hmm, can't remember the hate for the Falcon and Holden utes that were rated to haul less (Falcon 2300kg, Holden 2100kg). For many, the Shark 6's braked rating of 2.5 tonnes will be sufficient. That will cover most small- to medium-sized boats and caravans. And for car folk, we loaded Alex's BMW racer to the hitch to see how it went. It wasn't all plain sailing, though the troubles were all user induced. The Shark 6 is fitted with a 50mm towball, and after double checking that was what we required, we discovered the car trailer actually has the dreaded 1 7/8th hitch. It wasn't easy to get the 50mm towball off the hitch either. Well, not until we started turning the big crescent in the right direction, and then it unscrewed easily enough. A quick trip down the road bagged us a 50mm ball, only to find the shank was too big to fit the Shark's narrow ball mount hole. So back again to the shop to find one that fitted. Another towing tip; when you are changing balls, ensure that you don't leave the nut to the other ball on the trailer drawbar. Because it won't be there when you get back. Finally under way, we found the Shark 6's ample torque and the smooth delivery make for easy towing. The BMW racer and trailer weigh in around 1900kg all told, so well within the 2.5 tonne limit of the Shark 6. With a load on the rear, the Shark 6 rides better, plush almost, but still has the travel to soak up the bumps. Once the trailer is hooked up and the wiring harness connected, Shark 6 then defaults to hybrid mode, i.e., you can't tow in engine-off, EV mode. The Shark 6 also issues forth a few handy safety messages via the screen. For example: 'Ensure there is sufficient energy in the vehicle to allow for the reduction in range from towing'. Yes, towing uses more energy. The best advice, 'Please tow on a flat road as possible [sic]'. BYD shouldn't have worried, this pulls up hills well. It easily surged up the Bombay incline heading north on a half throttle at the legal towing limit (90km/h) and then accelerated up past that when given the full travel. BYD recommends setting the battery state of charge at 70 per cent when towing. That means the 1.5T will turn the generator to ensure the battery maintains a 70 per cent charge. This helps ensure the motors can draw on that energy to produce their full output. When we hooked the trailer up, the battery was at 54 per cent, meaning the engine was working hard initially to get the battery back up to 70 percent. And that sent the fuel consumption rising rapidly towards 20L/100km. So, ideally, start your towing with a charged battery. However, once at 70 per cent, the 1.5 engine settled down, and so did the consumption numbers on the trip computer. These fell back to 14.5L/100km, where they remained. And that's about double what the Shark 6 will return in HEV mode when traversing the same terrain on the main highways without a trailer. Once the BMW was delivered back to its shed, we headed back home, the Shark 6 reverting to EV mode, which saw the average fuel use trend towards 7L/100km. We may have only travelled just over 100km all told with the trailer in tow but likely that's representative of what most Shark 6 owners will use it for. Is it a serious tow wagon? No, but it can tow and should fulfill the needs of its buyer. If you have a massive load to haul, buy the RAM 1500. Overnight, the Shark 6 required 14hrs to recharge the battery from 30 per cent to full, which then gave us 78km of EV travel around the city, unladen that is. While the payload isn't huge, it's still reasonable at 790kg, and the tray is sizable. It measures up at 1360mm wide at the tailgate (1200mm between the wheelarches) and is 1530mm long. You can lower the tailgate from the key fob and it drops down calmly. Popeye strength isn't required to close it either. The spray-in tray liner also protects the tops of the wellside. And there's load area lighting, and six tie-down points. Its party trick is the vehicle-to-load capability with three 10A outlets. While it's business out back, it's a pleasure palace inside. The seats are seriously sumptuous, even in the rear. And there is the long list of standard features. The large screen can take some time to boot up first thing, and why some of the touch points are so small is mystifying, given the size of the thing. The clarity is tops, the surround view camera a model of resolution. This quickly appears when you prod the steering wheel button and you'll need it; this is quite the beast in the car park and the extremities are hard to judge. The abundant safety features issue the odd alert. Its driver monitor doesn't like you looking too long at the screen and while the adaptive cruise works well, the Intelligent Cruise, which adds lane keeping, is best kept off. It's forever self-steering and weaves in the lane too much. The unladen ride may not be class leading but it does cope with bumps well. Its turning circle is large but the steering light, and the powertrain refinement is unmatched in its class. Even in hybrid mode, the engine is quiet, its vibrations well contained. Keep it charged up, and your fuel bills will be low too. While not cheap at $70k, in the scheme of the market, this is good value.
