Gujarat minister's son held for ties to company that swindled Rs 71 crore MGNREGS funds
VADODARA: Police in Gujarat Saturday arrested the elder son of minister of state for panchayats Bachu Khabad in connection with an alleged Rs 71 crore scam tied to MGNREGS in Dahod district.

Balwant Khabad was taken into custody near Bathwada toll plaza after weeks of evading arrest.
Police alleged that he was linked to Shri Raj Construction Co, which received payments for supplying materials for Nrega projects despite not qualifying through bidding. His younger brother Kiran Khabad, connected to Shri Raj Traders, remains at large. Both firms received funds without securing contracts, police added.
The scam, unearthed in April by Dahod's district rural development authority (DRDA), involved 32 firms supplying materials in Devgadh Baria and Dhanpur talukas. None had emerged as lowest bidders, a requirement under procurement rules. DRDA's inquiry revealed several projects were either never initiated or inflated, yet payments were cleared.
Khabad, an OBC heavyweight of BJP and a four-term MLA, has not responded publicly to his son's arrest.
Balwant and Kiran had filed anticipatory bail applications in Dahod court but later withdrew them.
Balwant and co-accused Darshit Patel, a taluka development officer currently posted in Kheda, were produced in Dahod court and remanded in police custody for five days. Patel was earlier posted in Devgadh Baria, one of the talukas named in the investigation.
Seven people have been arrested so far in the scam, which came to light following multiple representations to DRDA, including Congress legislators.
Leader of opposition Amit Chavda, of Congress, demanded formation of an SIT, alleging: 'This scam could be much larger. Only an honest investigation can uncover full details.'

‘Defence may be the wrong word': Shashi Tharoor points at ‘China factor' in Pakistan conflict
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Thursday that 81 percent of Pakistan's defence equipment comes from China, making the country an 'impossible factor' to ignore in the conflict with Islamabad. Tharoor, who is leading a parliamentary delegation to the US to expose Islamabad's nexus with terror after India's Operation Sindoor, said that New Delhi-Beijing relations were making good progress till last month's conflict with Pakistan. 'I'm not going to mince my words, but we are aware that China has immense stakes in Pakistan," PTI quoted Tharoor as telling the representatives of think tanks at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC. Tharoor pointed out that the largest single project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and that 81 percent of Pakistani defence equipment is from China. 'Defence may be the wrong word here. Offence in many ways……China is an absolutely impossible factor to ignore in what has been our confrontation with Pakistan,' Tharoor said. Shashi Tharoor told the gathering that India had seen good progress in its relationship with China after tensions since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes. The Thiruvananthapuram MP added that during Operation Sindoor and the conflict with Pakistan, New Delhi saw a very different China in terms of its support for Islamabad, even on the UN Security Council. 'We have no illusions about what the challenges are in our neighbourhood, but I want to remind you all that India has consistently chosen a path of keeping open channels of communication, even with our adversaries. We have tried as much as possible to focus on development, on growth, on trade. Our trade with China is still at record levels. It's not that we are adopting a posture of hostility, but we would be naive not to be aware of these other currents around,' he said. The UN Security Council, on April 25, issued a press statement on the 'terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir' after the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The statement had condemned the attack in "the strongest terms' but did not mention The Resistance Front as Pakistan, which is a non-permanent member of the council, got it removed with China's help. 'The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice,' the press statement had said. Shashi Tharoor was asked about the Chinese military equipment that Pakistan used in the conflict during an earlier interaction at the Council on Foreign Relations. The delegation head said that when India saw what the Pakistanis were attempting to do using Chinese technology, for instance, the 'kill chain' that the Chinese specialise in, where the radar, GPS, planes and missiles are all linked together and they react instantly, 'we simply did things in a different way. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to hit' 11 Pakistani airfields, and "we wouldn't have been able to breach the Chinese-supplied air defences. 'So it's clear that assessments were taking place while the fighting was happening, and we were recalibrating our strategies in order to end as effectively as we were able to end,' Tharoor said.

MGNREGA ‘scam': Khabad brothers sent to judicial custody, five others get bail
A court in Dahod on Friday sent Balvantsinh Khabad and Kiran Khabad — sons of Gujarat Minister of State for Panchayat, Bachubhai Khabad — to judicial custody, after the end of their police remand in two separate cases. The cases were lodged against them at Dahod B Division police station, following their bail in the first FIR of alleged irregularities in the works carried out under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in district's Devgadh Baria and Dhanpur talukas. The development came a day after a court on Thursday granted regular bail to five others arrested in the first FIR of April 24. Those who have been granted bail include then Taluka Development Officer (TDO) of Devgadh Baria, Darshan Patel; Rasik Rathwa — the current Deputy District Development Officer (DDO) of Dahod, who was then the TDO of Dhanpur taluka; the accountants of the MGNREGA branch, Jayveer Nagori and Mahipalsinh Chauhanand, and technical assistant Manish Patel. The alleged scam — spanning from April 2021 to December 2024 — came to light when the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Director BM Patel discovered a large number of irregularities in the payments made for incomplete projects under MGNREGA in two villages in Devgadh Baria and one village in Dhanpur taluka, where several metres of road was left unconstructed but payments were made to 'unauthorised agencies', using forged completion certificates of the work. While 14 persons were arrested in connection with the FIR and sent to judicial custody at the end of their police remand, the Khabad brothers were granted regular bail on May 29, after the Dahod Sessions court rejected the police revision petition challenging the bail order. Within minutes of their release from Dahod sub-jail, Kiran Khabad was arrested in a second FIR filed by DRDA in-charge Director while Balvantsinh was arrested in another FIR two days later. On Friday, investigating officer DySP Jagdishsinh Bhandari told The Indian Express, 'Both Balvantsinh and Kiran Khabad have been sent to judicial custody on Friday. A total of five accused were granted bail. The remaining nine accused are in judicial custody… The probe is on in the case of other accused involved in the case, who are yet to be arrested.'

Two more Naxals gunned down by security forces in Chhattisgarh, four killed so far
Security forces on Saturday gunned down two more Naxals during an ongoing anti-Naxal operation in the dense forest region of the National Park area in Bijapur district. With these fresh encounters, the total number of Naxals eliminated over the past three days has risen to four, including two high-ranking Maoist operation, which began earlier this week, has led to the deaths of top Naxal leader, who was Central Committee member, Sudhakar alias Gautam, carrying a bounty of Rs 1 crore, and Bhaskar Rao alias Mailarapu Adellu, who had a combined bounty of Rs 45 lakh across Telangana and was the Secretary of the Mancherial-Komarambheem (MKB) division of the CPI (Maoist) Telangana State Committee and also a member of its Special Zonal Committee. On Friday, security personnel recovered Bhaskar's body along with an AK-47 rifle, explosives and other arms. Earlier, on the first day of the operation, Sudhakar was killed and an automatic rifle was seized from the encounter continued through the night into Saturday, with security forces recovering additional automatic weapons from the latest gunfight.
