Pumas, Griquas set for another epic encounter

The Citizen20-05-2025

The next chapter in the budding rivalry between the Pumas and Griquas will be written in Saturday's SA Cup final at Mbombela Stadium.
The two have been fierce competitors since the 2022 Currie Cup final in Kimberley, which the Pumas won 26-19 to lift the famous trophy for the first time in their history.
Griquas got their revenge last year, beating the Pumas twice, including 46-24 in the final, to lift the inaugural SA Cup.
But the Pumas regained the ascendancy over their Kimberley rivals with two convincing victories in the 2024 Currie Cup, including a 66-26 romp at Mbombela Stadium.
Both teams, though, failed to make the semi-finals.
Last month, the Pumas ended Griquas' unbeaten run in the SA Cup across two seasons with a 39-35 win in Mbombela.
That helped coach Jimmy Stonehouse's men to finish top of the log and earn the right to host Saturday's final, which kicks off at 18:30.
Pumas vs Griquas recent results:
2024: Pumas 26 Griquas 31, Mbombela (SA Cup league stage)
2024: Griquas 46 Pumas 24, Kimberley (SA Cup final)
2024: Griquas 24 Pumas 44, Kimberley (Currie Cup league stage)
2024: Pumas 66 Griquas 26, Mbombela (Currie Cup league stage)
2025: Pumas 31 Griquas 29, Mbombela (SA Cup league stage)

The 22-year-old defender enjoyed a stunning breakthrough season at Bay, making 23 appearances across all competition. Now, reports suggest his hard-work has paid off and a lucrative offer is on the table! 'He should be an Orlando Pirates player and they are offering him a five-year contract from July this year until June 2030,' an insider told Soccer Laduma . 'It's a very good contract for a young defender like him. Remember he is only 22-years-old and has been doing very well for Richards Bay and it will be a loss to them but a win for Pirates.' Yanga Madiba is the only other recognised left-back at the club currently. While Hotto can also feature in a 'left-wing-back' scenario. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates sharpen swords for two stars!

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are in another transfer battle. This time, it concerns SuperSport wing-back Neo Rapoo, who, at the age of nineteen, has amassed twelve league appearances this season, suggesting him to be a major prospect for the future, a sentiment further solidified by his SA U20 AFCON-winning performance. 'Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are both keen to sign SuperSport United left-back Neo Rapoo ahead of the new season,' an inside source revealed. 'His performances as he led South Africa U20 to the Africa Cup of Nations title earned him interest in Scandinavia and the Gulf but sources as Matsatsansa have confirmed Chiefs and Pirates are both seriously after the player who is seen as future senior national team left-back.' 'With Orlando Pirates having released Paseka Mako and the retirement of Innocent Maela, their interest on the promising full-back comes as no surprise, while Chiefs are looking to remedy a position that has plagued them in the last couple of seasons.' Meanwhile, another Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have another shared, invested intrest in AmaZulu star Rowan Human who has informed his current club that he will not renew his contract for next season. 'AmaZulu FC midfielder Rowan Human has been offered to Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs by his representatives as he is set to leave the club on a free transfer. Human will leave Usuthu at the end of June after his contract expires after the 24-year-old failed to reach an agreement with the club on a new contract,' a source revealed. 'Human has been offered to both Soweto giants by his representatives and it could only be a matter of time before he gets snapped up as he will be a free agent and rediscovered his old form.' Chiefs eye star winger, while Pirates announce new arrival!

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates continue to engage in positive talks with both clubs linked to several star players, including in-form striker Fiston Mayele – however, that seems a bit of reach. A player who is believed to be attainable is Kaizer Chiefs' target, Maxi Mpia Nzengel. The Young Africans midfielder, like Fiesal Salum, is reportedly keen on a move to Soweto. 'So, he wants to come to Chiefs, because he is not keen on renewing with Yanga,' a source said. 'Also, he is said to be in advanced talks with them [Kaizer Chiefs].' Meanwhile, Baroka FC chairman Khurishi Mphahlele has confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Orlando Pirates for star defender Tshepho Moshiloane, who will arrive on July 1. 'We still got to pay Mashiloane until the end of June, but Orlando Pirates have purchased Mashiloane for the coming season, not this season,' Baroka' FC's chairman Khurishi Mphahlele told iDiski Times . 'But if Pirates want Mashiloane earlier there's no problem we've got an agreement with Pirates. We can always make provision for that, but we are going to pay Mashiloane at the end of June because his contract ends at the end of June and the Pirates contract begins on the first of July. 'From the first of July he is an Orlando Pirates player, until then he's still our player and we pay him.' An emerging theme in the offseason market is that Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have the same tasted, highlighted most recently by their shared interest in SuperSport youngster 'Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are both keen to sign SuperSport United left-back Neo Rapoo ahead of the new season,' an inside source revealed. 'His performances as he led South Africa U20 to the Africa Cup of Nations title earned him interest in Scandinavia and the Gulf but sources as Matsatsansa have confirmed Chiefs and Pirates are both seriously after the player who is seen as future senior national team left-back.'
