Stop your rubbish bins from smelling and keep insects away by adding this 1 item
Hot temperatures can cause bins to become foul and attract flies.
When temperatures are high, bins become noticeably smellier. This is because the heat makes them the perfect conditions for mould and bacteria to grow and thrive.
Cleaning your household bins in warmer climates is a job that should never be delayed or overlooked as this is when ants, flies and even maggots may swoop in and once they're in, they can be hard to get rid of.
Keeping your bins fresh and insects away, Josh Morris, an expert from Busy Bins, has recommended using a few simple kitchen ingredients.
He said: 'Place citrus peels, such as lemon or orange peels, at the bottom of your bin before adding a new trash bag. The natural oils in citrus peels help to neutralise odours.'
This may sound strange but citrus peels from lemons and oranges contain oils that slowly release a fresh fragrance that is strong to mark unpleasant odours, reports the Express.
Citrus peels are also mildly antimicrobial and will slow down bacterial and mould growth in bins.
However, one of the best reasons to use citrus peels in bins is that their oil has insect-repellent properties and will keep the ants and flies to keep them away.
This is a simple and very effective method to prevent bins from becoming smelly in the heat, but cleaning them does not need to be difficult either.
There are several cleaning methods to keep a bin fresh but the easiest tends to be using white vinegar.
John said: 'Use equal parts white vinegar and water and place this together in a spray bottle.

'Once in the spray bottle, you can then spray this onto the interior and exterior surface of your rubbish bin. You can then give the bin a good old scrub to remove stains and odours.'
White vinegar contains acetic acid, which can kill bacteria and mould naturally without having to use a harsher chemical cleaner.
It also helps break down food spills or any sticky residues that have leaked from a rubbish bin and makes it very easy to wipe these stains away.
The strong smell will also repel flies and other pests that can creep into your home this time of year, so you do not have to worry about insects if you want to open a window.
There are also many products you can buy to keep your bin clean without much effort if you would prefer such as charcoal odour absorbers, scented rubbish bins and even bin cleaning tablets.
However, the absolute best way to stop smells and pests around your rubbish bin is to simply make sure not to overfill it and take it out every few days to stop leftover food rotting in your kitchen.

Met Office says hot weather on the way but there's a catch
Met Office says hot weather on the way but there's a catch There's been a lot of 'changeable weather' the last week, so when will it get hot again? A spell of hot weather is on the way in Wales (Image: John Myers ) Those with school sports days and outdoor festivals and gigs in their diaries over the next few weeks will be hopeful of a return the beautifully warm and dry weather we had at the start of May. The good news is that a spell of hot weather is ahead for Wales in the second half of next week. The bad news is it could be accompanied by thunderstorms and showers. The Met Office's long range forecast for Monday June 9 to Wednesday, June 18 predicts "changeable weather" across Wales and the UK. It expects at the start of next week, we will experience showers or some longer spells of rain spreading in from the Atlantic. The heaviest and most prolonged rain, it says, will probably be across parts of the north and northwest, with the southeast likely driest. The forecast adds: "Temperatures are expected to be near normal or slightly below. "Into the second half of next week, there is potential for some warm or hot weather to develop. Article continues below "Particularly in the south and east, although this may be accompanied by heavy showers and thunderstorms. "Into the middle of June, high pressure may become more dominant. "This could bring periods of fine and dry weather, especially in south and temperatures rising above normal." Looking even further ahead for Thursday, June 19 to Thursday, July 3, the forecast reads: "Mid-June will probably see a good deal of dry weather across the UK. "High pressure will tend to dominate, especially in the south. "Toward the end of June and start of July, details are uncertain but conditions may become more changeable with some periods of unsettled weather. "Temperatures will probably be slightly higher than normal, perhaps turning hot at times." In the short term, The Met Office outlook for Friday to Sunday predicts showers, clearing to warm sunny spells on Friday. It adds that heavier and more frequent showers will follow on Saturday, with thunder and lightning possible, before becoming drier on Sunday, often breezy and feeling rather cool. He appeared at court in Amsterdam today to begin the process of extradition to the UK and he was remanded to appear again on a date to be confirmed. Detective superintendent Zoe Russo from the NWROCU said: "This arrest demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that individuals wanted for serious offences, whether in the UK or abroad, are brought to justice. "We work closely with international law enforcement partners to track down and apprehend fugitives, no matter where they try to hide. The message is clear: if you are wanted, we will find you." Gill Duggan, head of Europe at the NCA said: " The agency has been working extensively with the ROCU and our international partners to trace Coggins and return him to the UK. "It does not matter where fugitives go. The agency's reach and strong relationships with international partners mean we will always tenaciously pursue those wanted by law enforcement." Coggins' brother Vincent, known as "the headmaster" to signify his role at the top of the Huyton Firm organised crime group, was jailed and convicted as part of the NWROCU's probe codenamed "Operation SubZero". Liverpool Echo reports that the arrests of many members of the organised crime syndicate resulted in some of the first EncroChat convictions in the UK.
