Ruud launches French Open campaign with easy win over Ramos Vinolas

Reuters26-05-2025

PARIS, May 26 (Reuters) - Twice runner-up Casper Ruud started his latest bid to reach another French Open final with a crushing 6-3 6-4 6-2 victory over seasoned Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos Vinolas in the first round on Monday.
Ruud warmed up for Roland Garros by becoming the first Norwegian winner of a Masters 1000 title at this month's Madrid Open before the 26-year-old's momentum ground to a halt after a 6-0 6-1 hammering by Jannik Sinner in the Rome quarter-finals.
The 2022 and 2023 Paris finalist showed why red clay remains his natural habitat despite that harsh reality check as he eased through the first set on Court Simonne Mathieu with a solitary break in the fourth game.
Ramos Vinolas came into his eighth clash with Ruud eager to avoid a fifth straight defeat and the 37-year-old recovered a loss of serve early in the second set to give himself a fighting chance for a comeback, only to fade away quickly.
A crosscourt backhand winner gave last year's semi-finalist Ruud another break at 3-2 and the seventh seed used the platform to double his lead before comfortably closing out the victory with another solid display in the third set.
Up next for Ruud is Portugal's Nuno Borges.

Glamorous Coco Gauff tucks into surprising snack as she swaps tennis for WNBA on New York night out

Coco Gauff is at the peak of her sporting powers after winning the French Open at the weekend... but that doesn't mean she can't indulge in a sweet treat every now and again. Many may expect the world No 2 tennis star to follow a strict diet 24/7 to maintain her high performance on the tennis court, but she was allowed a night off in New York on Tuesday. The glammed-up 21-year-old was spotted in courtside seats at the Liberty WNBA game in Brooklyn, and she tucked into a packet of Sour Patch Kids candy as she enjoyed the action. In a photo of the tennis star, she can be seen giving the peace sign and beaming at the camera from her VIP seat, while wearing a blue jacket, ripped black jeans and a pair of New Balance sneakers. She wore an infinity chain around her neck and had her hair in a single plait, and was joined by her brother Cameron, as well as Kobe Bryant 's widow Vanessa. Gauff arrived back in the US this week after her incredible triumph at Roland-Garros, in which she beat world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka to win the women's singles title. Despite her young age, Gauff now has two Grand Slam titles, having won the US Open in 2023 - at the age of just 19. Gauff won't be back on home soil for long, with Wimbledon and the grass court season fast approaching. On Tuesday night, the defending WNBA champion Liberty dominated the struggling Chicago Sky 85-66 to keep their unbeaten start to the season going. New York are now 9-0 on the season as they bid to defend their title, while Angel Reese and the Sky are a worrying 2-6.
