Scott family rebuilds after losing their dog and belongings in house fire

SCOTT, La. () — Cynthia Savoie and Darrell Savoie say they are picking up the pieces after a fire destroyed their home just two weeks ago. According to the , the fire occurred on May 12 around 8:30 a.m. in the 2300 block of Mills Street. Upon arrival, fire officials observed smoke emitting from the structure. Firefighters entered the home, and located the fire in a bedroom, which extended into the kitchen. Officials quickly contained the blaze, limiting further damage. Firefighters determined the cause of the fire was from a surge protector extension cord that exploded in a bedroom. The couple says they've lived in the home for 34 years, and now everything is gone. The homeowners say the fire started just moments after they left their home. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. 'A neighbor got in touch with my daughter, and everybody rushed, all the family that visits, everybody came.' Cynthia's godchild, Dione Robinson, says the fire also claimed the life of their family dog, Cookie. 'They lost their dog Cookie, pretty much everything,' said Robinson. 'The only thing they see was a few photos from when we were younger and things in the back room that were sealed off that the fire didn't reach, but the lost the majority of everything.' The family says they will always remember the countless holidays they've spent with one another at the home. They say while the fire may have taken everything, it can never take the love and memories they shared. 'Every Thanksgiving was over here, so everybody would come, it would be packed with people, good food, good vibes and that's my godparents, so anytime I wanted to come to laugh or watch the Superbowl, boxing with my uncle, anything, we would just come over here and spend time with them, it was always a good time when we came,' said Robinson. The family says while rebuilding their home won't be easy, they are holding onto hope and faith to get them through these challenging times. 'They still got their life, that's the most important thing,' said Robinson. 'Everything that was lost could be replaced, but having them here is the biggest step, we just gotta build everything back up brick by brick.'
