Crystal Palace target £40m-rated star as potential replacement for captain Marc Guehi - and hold talks with Jean-Philippe Mateta amid Man United interest

Crystal Palace have enquired after Sporting Lisbon's £40million-rated defender Ousmane Diomande and have held positive talks over a new contract for striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. Palace face competition for Diomande, 21, who would be viewed as a replacement for Marc Guehi. Meanwhile, Mateta, who has attracted attention from Manchester United, Aston Villa and Marseille, has held positive discussions over staying at Selhurst Park. Palace anticipate offers will come from Newcastle and Chelsea for Guehi. The Magpies made a plethora of failed bids for the England international last summer, whom Palace demanded £70m for. Aside from Guehi, Chelsea remain keen on a number of defensive options, including Jorrel Hato of Ajax. The highly rated centre back made his senior debut at just 16 years old and became an undisputed starter for the Eredivisie side last season. Now 19, Hato has been appointed as one of Ajax's vice-captains, and was named Eredivisie Talent of the Year in 2024-25. Meanwhile, Napoli are monitoring Trevoh Chalobah's situation. The centre back has been at Chelsea since the age of eight, but his place at Stamford Bridge has come under heavy speculation over the past year. Chalobah joined Palace on a season-long loan last August, but was recalled in January due to Enzo Maresca's defensive injury crisis.

France boss threatens to drop Premier League target amid £25m transfer talks

France face Germany in the Nations League third-place play-off on Sunday, with boss Didier Deschamps ready to take drastic action as Chelsea pursue one of his key players France head coach Didier Deschamps has threatened to drop Mike Maignan from his team for Sunday's Nations League game against Germany. Les Bleus will face the hosts in a third-place play-off. They lost a thrilling semi-final 5-4 to Spain on Thursday night, with Maignan starting between the sticks. He has emerged as France's first-choice keeper since Hugo Lloris retired after the 2022 World Cup. ‌ Maignan has impressed at club level as well, winning the Ligue 1 title with Lille in 2021 which earned him a move to AC Milan. The 29-year-old helped the Rossoneri to win the Serie A title in his first year at the club. ‌ He has since gone on to become captain of the Italian giants, but his future at the San Siro is in doubt. Chelsea have grown interested in signing the keeper as they look to replace David Sanchez. The Blues saw an opening offer below £15million rejected this week, with Milan demanding a fee in the region of £25m. A final bid is expected to be made in the coming days, though first comes France's clash with Germany. Amid the speculation around his future, his form has suffered a downturn. And that has led Deschamps to suggest that he could drop Maignan in favour of the uncapped Lucas Chevalier or former Nottingham Forest star Brice Samba on Sunday. "Changing goalkeepers? We'll see. We'll see how Mike is, how he feels. It's still possible. No decision has been made yet, it's been a while," Deschamps said ahead of the third-place play-off in Stuttgart. "Obviously, that could also be the case regarding the goalkeeper position. Whether Mike needs a break or not... I don't have those details yet." ‌ Thursday's defeat to Spain was a frustrating one, with France at one stage losing 4-0 before a late comeback. The loss raised the pressure on Deschamps after a difficult Euro 2024 campaign, and the boss has admitted that changes are coming for Sunday. "I won't hide from you that the interest is still relative. This match is there, we're going to play it... It's Germany. It will be useful, but taking into account the very specific situation," he added. "Is the match at stake minimal? You said so. Some players aren't in the best shape. We have too little time between the two matches. There will be a lot of changes. I work according to the players. ‌ "Some have very interesting potential. They won't all be able to play. I've never deprived myself of attacking players. We had a lot of chances against Spain, but we also conceded five goals. It's a question of balance. "They're mostly young players. I'm not going to complain about having a lot of attacking players. It needs confirmation. They won't all be able to play at the same time, but it's very interesting for me." Jadon Sancho's stance on playing for Man Utd again after Chelsea's £5m decision

Jadon Sancho is facing an uncertain future in the summer transfer window after Chelsea's decision not to sign him permanently forced Manchester United to confront their previous mistakes Manchester United have been handed a serious problem after Chelsea refused to sign Jadon Sancho permanently, because he has no intention of ever playing for the club again. Sancho had appeared set to join the Blues permanently after spending the season on loan in west London, only for negotiations to break down. Chelsea ultimately decided they would rather pay United a £5million fee than go through with signing the winger for £25m. Sancho is paid around £300,000 per week by United and he and Chelsea had been unable to find a compromise on his wages, forcing a rethink for all parties. ‌ United are desperate to sell off their unwanted players in the summer transfer window, in order to help fund a rebuild under Ruben Amorim. Sancho had appeared to be the most straightforward deal, with Chelsea lumbered with an obligation to buy the 25-year-old, only for the move to break down. ‌ He has now joined the list of other unwanted players United must find buyers for, which also includes fellow loanees Marcus Rashford and Antony, and wantaway winger Alejandro Garnacho. Keeping Sancho for the 2025/26 campaign under Amorim is not a viable option, with ESPN reporting that he has no intention of pulling the United shirt on again. His stance matches that of Amorim, who doesn't want him in his squad when the next season begins. Sancho returned five goals and 10 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea, helping them win the Conference League – a solid if unspectacular effort which won't help their efforts to sell him. The report states that there is tentative interest from West Ham, although Sancho's wages will be problematic. He has another year left on his contract with United, who are reluctant to buy out the winger in order to grease the wheels of his exit. Sancho has been a flop of significant proportions since signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for £73m. He has just 12 goals and six assists in 83 games for United over four years and has not come close to matching the potential shown at Dortmund. HAVE YOUR SAY! What does the future hold for Jadon Sancho? Comment below. ‌ He was absolutely electric in Germany, where he managed 40 goals and 47 assists in 118 appearances for Dortmund, but has struggled to replicate that form in England. A potential move back to the Bundesliga was potentially on the cards with Bayer Leverkusen, until the club hired Erik ten Hag as manager to shut that door. Ten Hag fell out with Sancho over his apparent lack of effort in training at Carrington and it was the Dutchman who prompted his loan move back to Dortmund in January 2024.
