Scientists finally decode what makes orange cats so unique

Scientists have finally narrowed down on a long theorised elusive genetic mutation that makes orange cats so unique, unlike any other mammal.
While the orange fur colour can be seen across mammals, including tigers, golden retrievers, orangutans and red-headed humans, only in domestic cats is the colouration linked to sex, appearing much more often in males.
This pattern has pointed to an unknown "orange gene" on the X chromosome in cats but identifying this gene has eluded scientists for over a century.
Now, a new study published in the journal Current Biology finally unravels this gene, explaining the peculiarity of ginger cat genetics.
"Identifying the gene has been a longtime dream, so it's a joy to have finally cracked it," said Hiroyuki Sasaki, a geneticist and co-author of the study from Japan's Kyushu University.
Any male cat with the mutation dubbed 'sex-linked orange' will be entirely orange due to a random deletion of a section of its DNA in the X chromosome.
However, a female cat needs to inherit the genetic change on both of its X chromosomes to be entirely orange, which makes it a less likely occurrence.
If a female cat inherits one orange and one black gene, they develop patchy or mottled coats that is seen in calicos and tortoiseshells.
"These ginger and black patches form because, early in development, one X chromosome in each cell is randomly switched off," Dr Sasaki explained.
"As cells divide, this creates areas with different active coat colour genes, resulting in distinct patches. The effect is so visual that it has become the textbook example of X-chromosome inactivation,' he said.
In the study, researchers analysed DNA from 18 cats – 10 with orange fur and eight without.
They found that all orange cats shared a specific deletion in the ARHGAP36 gene, while the non-orange cats did not.
Scientists found that this pattern held true in 49 additional cats, including samples from an international cat genome database.
However, until the discovery ARHGAP36 gene was thought to have no connection to pigmentation.
"ARHGAP36 is essential for development, with many other roles in the body, so I had never imagined it could be the orange gene. Mutations to the protein structure would likely be harmful to the cat,' Dr Sasaki explained.
Researchers then found ARHGAP36 gene activity in a cell type, called the pigment cell, in orange cats, where it's not normally expressed.
The study found that this rogue expression of the ARHGAP36 gene in the cat pigment cells inhibits an intermediate step controlling coat colour.
"Certainly, this is a very unusual mechanism where you get misexpression of a gene in a specific cell type," said Christopher Kaelin, another author of the study from Stanford University.
Researchers suspect an altered expression of the gene in some other tissue might also affect behaviour.
"There are not many scientific studies of the personality of orange cats," Dr Kaelin said.
"For example, many cat owners swear by the idea that different coat colours and patterns are linked with different personalities. There's no scientific evidence for this yet, but it's an intriguing idea and one I'd love to explore further,' Dr Sasaki added.
Scientists suspect that one reason orange cats have a reputation as 'friendly agents of chaos' could be due to most of them being male.

A new, potentially deadly insomnia hack which involves people hanging from belts in an attempt to get some decent shut eye has shocked social media users. In the clips, Chinese citizens are seen with their heads in a harnesses attached to fixed metal bars, as they swing back and forth or side to side for a few minutes. This apparent cure for insomnia is based on a technique developed by a man named Sun Rongchun from Shenyang, a city in northeast China. Mr Sun suffered from cervical spondylosis, age-related neck pain caused by bones in the spine wearing down over time, which also affected his sleep. He developed the neck harness and swinging technique to alleviate this pain by relieving pressure on the spine, with numerous videos claiming it combats insomnia. A clip shared on X — viewed over 11million times— states: 'Those who try it claim their sleep problems have significantly improved.' Some users posting under the clip claimed it was an example of cervical spine traction—a treatment where a pulling motion is applied on the neck to relieve pain and pressure. However, other baffled commentators said it looked like a 'way to sleep forever'. Medics have also warned the technique is not backed by evidence as an insomnia aid and could even be fatal. They cautioned that the cervical spine, the part of the backbone that forms the neck, isn't designed to support a person's full weight from a harness. Doing so risks damaging the sensitive vertebrae and blood vessels in your neck, risking a stroke, nerve damage or even full paralysis. Chinese media have also reported deaths linked to the practice, with one man from Chongqing, in the country's south east, reportedly dying while using a neck harness attached to a tree last year. Dr Siddhart Gautam, a neurosurgeon from Mumbai, told that while people who use the devices may experience a placebo effect, there no evidence it actually works to help insomnia. Fellow neurology expert Dr Manish Chhabria, also from Mumbai, agreed, stating the technique is dangerous and could even be deadly due to extreme pressure on the neck. More than 5million people in the UK are thought to suffer from chronic insomnia. This is defined as struggling to fall or stay asleep at least three nights a week for more than three months. GPs are increasingly cautious about prescribing sleeping pills due to concerns about tolerance–where patients need higher doses to feel the same effect–and addiction. Long-term use of traditional sleeping pills has been linked to increased risks of dementia, falls and impaired concentration – which can be particularly dangerous when driving. NHS guidelines instead recommend cognitive behavioural therapy, a form of psychotherapy, as the first-line treatment for the condition. The health service recommends adults get at least seven hours of sleep per night on average.

A private lunar lander from Japan is closing in on the moon, aiming for a touchdown in the unexplored far north with a mini rover. The moon landing attempt by Tokyo-based company ispace on Friday Japan time is the latest entry in the rapidly expanding commercial lunar rush. The encore comes two years after the company's first moonshot ended in a crash landing, giving rise to the name Resilience for its successor lander. Resilience holds a rover with a shovel to gather lunar dirt as well as a Swedish artist's toy-size red house that will be lowered onto the moon's dusty surface. Long the province of governments, the moon became a target of private outfits in 2019, with more flops than wins along the way. Launched in January from Florida on a long, roundabout journey, Resilience entered lunar orbit last month. It shared a SpaceX ride with Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, which reached the moon faster and became the first private entity to successfully land there in March. Another U.S. company, Intuitive Machines, arrived at the moon a few days after Firefly. But the tall, spindly lander face-planted in a crater near the moon's south pole and was declared dead within hours. Resilience is targeting the top of the moon, a less forbidding place than the shadowy bottom. The ispace team chose a flat area with few boulders in Mare Frigoris or Sea of Cold, a long and narrow region full of craters and ancient lava flows that stretches across the near side's northern tier. Once settled with power and communication flowing, the 7.5-foot (2.3-meter) Resilience will lower the piggybacking rover onto the lunar surface. Made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic with four wheels, ispace's European-built rover — named Tenacious — sports a high-definition camera to scout out the area and a shovel to scoop up some lunar dirt for NASA. The rover, weighing just 11 pounds (5 kilograms), will stick close to the lander, going in circles at a speed of less than one inch (a couple centimeters) per second. Besides science and tech experiments, there's an artistic touch. The rover holds a tiny, Swedish-style red cottage with white trim and a green door, dubbed the Moonhouse by creator Mikael Genberg, for placement on the lunar surface. Takeshi Hakamada, CEO and founder of ispace, considers the latest moonshot 'merely a steppingstone,' with its next, much bigger lander launching by 2027 with NASA involvement, and even more to follow. 'We're not trying to corner the market. We're trying to build the market,' Jeremy Fix, chief engineer for ispace's U.S. subsidiary, said at a conference last month. 'It's a huge market, a huge potential." Fix noted that ispace, like other businesses, does not have 'infinite funds' and cannot afford repeated failures. While not divulging the cost of the current mission, company officials said it's less than the first one which exceeded $100 million. Two other U.S. companies are aiming for moon landings by year's end: Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Astrobotic Technology. Astrobotic's first lunar lander missed the moon altogether in 2024 and came crashing back through Earth's atmosphere. For decades, governments competed to get to the moon. Only five countries have pulled off successful robotic lunar landings: Russia, the U.S., China, India and Japan. Of those, only the U.S. has landed people on the moon: 12 NASA astronauts from 1969 through 1972. NASA expects to send four astronauts around the moon next year. That would be followed a year or more later by the first lunar landing by a crew in more than a half-century, with SpaceX's Starship providing the lift from lunar orbit all the way down to the surface. TOKYO, June 5 (Reuters) - Japanese startup ispace aims to become the first non-U.S. company to achieve a controlled moon landing as it prepares for the touchdown of its second uncrewed spacecraft on Friday, two years after its inaugural mission ended in failure. Tokyo-based ispace (9348.T), opens new tab hopes to join U.S. firms Intuitive Machines (LUNR.O), opens new tab and Firefly Aerospace, which have accomplished commercial landings since last year amid an intensifying global race for the moon that includes state-run missions from China and India. The mission also highlights broad public- and private-sector expectations from Japan, which remains committed to lunar exploration as part of NASA's Artemis moon program, despite mounting uncertainty about its future as President Donald Trump reshapes U.S. space policies. "A moon landing is not a dream but it has become a reality," ispace CEO Takeshi Hakamada has said. The company's first lunar lander in April 2023 crashed onto the moon's surface due to a software issue that incorrectly assessed its altitude during descent over precipitous terrain. Its second lander, named Resilience, in January shared a SpaceX rocket launch with Firefly's Blue Ghost lander. Blue Ghost took a faster trajectory to the moon and touched down successfully in March. Currently circling about 100 km (62 miles) above the lunar surface, Resilience carries a rover built by ispace's Luxembourg subsidiary and payloads worth a total of $16 million, including scientific instruments from Japanese firms and a Taiwanese university. After Friday's landing on Mare Frigoris, a lunar sea relatively close to the moon's north pole, scheduled for 4:17 a.m. Japan time (1917 GMT, Thursday), the 2.3-metre-high lander and the microwave-sized rover are tasked to capture images of regolith, the moon's fine-grained surface material. If successful, ispace said it will transfer the ownership of the collected material to NASA to fulfil what it says would be the world's first commercial transaction of lunar resources. According to a 2020 NASA statement, ispace's Japan and Luxembourg units would each receive $5,000 under this arrangement. NASA was not immediately able to comment on the impact of the Trump administration's proposed budget reductions on the contract. An ispace spokesperson declined to comment. The company envisions establishing a lunar colony of 1,000 inhabitants by the 2040s, tapping the moon's water resources. It plans seven more missions in the U.S. and Japan through 2029, including a NASA-sponsored one as part of the Artemis program, to capitalize on increasing demands for lunar transportation. About a dozen corporate partners have provided support for ispace missions, including titanium materials from Citizen Watch (7762.T), opens new tab and design expertise from automaker Suzuki (7269.T), opens new tab. In Japan, a wide range of businesses from construction firms to carmakers engage in lunar exploration research, and the breadth of industrial interest in the moon may surpass that in the United States, said Atsushi Uchida, Research Director at Mitsubishi Research Institute. The government has been keen to promote Japan's roles in the Artemis program, signing an agreement with NASA last year to include two Japanese astronauts and a Toyota-built (7203.T), opens new tab rover in forthcoming missions to the lunar surface. Exploration of the moon and Mars is one of the key objectives of Japan's newly-established multibillion-dollar space venture fund. "Having ispace, a domestic transportation option, is a huge advantage for Japanese businesses and universities that foray into lunar exploration using government funds," said Ritsumeikan University professor Kazuto Saiki, who participated in Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) SLIM mission that achieved Japan's first lunar landing last year. JAXA President Hiroshi Yamakawa said last month that he was rooting for ispace's re-attempt because their "success will attract attention to the whole Japanese space industry." Investors are keen. Shares in ispace, which made a blistering market debut in 2023 but languished after the landing failure, have risen about 60% year-to-date, epitomising a space startup boom in the Japanese capital market.
