Timor-Leste on track to full Asean membership by October, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — South-east Asian leaders have agreed to accept Timor-Leste as the 11th member of the regional bloc at the upcoming Asean Summit in October, subject to the fulfilment of several remaining requirements for full membership.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, however, said that the leaders had reached a consensus to support Timor-Leste in taking all necessary steps to become a full member of the regional bloc.
'The decision was clearly to agree (that) they would become accepted as full member by next Summit in October, of course subject to one or two actions or reforms to be undertaken, particularly one of the condition of economic pillar,' he said in the wrap-up press conference to conclude the 46th Asean Summit, here today.
Timor Leste, which first applied for Asean membership in 2011, was granted observer status at high-level meetings in 2022. However, its full integration is still under evaluation.
Its Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, who was also in Kuala Lumpur to attend the Summit, was reported as being optimistic about securing the full membership by the end of this year. — Bernama

Ringgit likely to trade within RM4.22-RM4.23 against greenback next week
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit is likely to trade around RM4.22 to RM4.23 next week, said an analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that next week multiple United States (US) economic data will be out, namely the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) for the month of May which plays a key role in shaping the market. "While the data might show deceleration in inflation rate, the US Federal Reserve is likely to stay cautious as it is wary about the potential inflationary pressures arising from the tariff shocks. "Already, responses from the US Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Index survey indicated that businesses have become more pessimistic as the higher tariffs have affected the supply chains and resulted in higher operating costs,' he told Bernama. The ringgit ended the week higher against the US dollar, closing at 4.2270/2360 on Friday from 4.2530/2605 a week earlier. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit rose vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9324/9390 from 2.9531/9585 and inched higher against the British pound to 5.7212/7334 from 5.7284/7385 a week earlier. However, it depreciated versus the euro to 4.8268/8371 at Friday's close from 4.8169/8254 at the end of last week. The ringgit traded mostly higher against ASEAN currencies. The local note improved against the Singapore dollar to 3.2862/2934 on Friday from 3.2938/3002 the previous week, edged higher versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.5/260.2 from 260.4/261.1 and stronger vis-a-vis the Philippine peso to 7.58/7.60 from 7.62/7.64 a week before, However, it weakened versus the Thai baht to 12.9599/9947 from 12.9507/9790 last week. - Bernama

PAS eyes support of ‘critical' non-Malays disgruntled with govt
PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah said that although some PH supporters may have become disappointed with the party, they still disliked PAS over its perceived hardline Malay-Muslim stance. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Non-Malay voters disgruntled with the Pakatan Harapan-led government are the target of PAS, the largest opposition party in the Dewan Rakyat, as it prepares for the next general election. PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah acknowledged that Malay-Muslim parties have struggled to gain the support of non-Malays. However, it was apparent that voters who make up PH's core support have become increasingly critical of the government led by PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim, Amar said in an interview with Malaysiakini. 'The question now is how PAS can attract them to our side,' Amar was quoted as saying. The challenge was to find more convincing ways to win over the non-Malays ahead of the general election, which is due by February 2028. While some PH supporters may have become disappointed with the coalition's inability to execute various reforms it had promised, he admitted that they still disliked PAS due to its perceived hardline Malay-Muslim stance. 'This is what we're currently thinking about: how to win their support,' he said, adding that the Islamic party must preserve its clean image to retain young voters. Amar also took a swipe at its Perikatan Nasional partner Gerakan for making statements that have 'harmed and undermined' PAS. He urged Gerakan, the only multiracial party in the opposition coalition, to exercise control in making public statements, adding that PAS keeps an eye on such matters. 'I have to be honest here, because occasionally their remarks have backfired. They need to be careful and exercise control, because we're part of the same coalition. There must be give and take,' he said. Gerakan has 'much to improve' in attracting Chinese voters, who have been largely supporting DAP, and Gerakan's machinery and groundwork needed improvement, while the party's image itself needed to be rebuilt, he said. In November last year, Gerakan president Dominic Lau urged PAS to declare that it will not interfere with the rights of other communities, in order to ease the concerns of non-Malays and boost their support for PN. However, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man shot down the proposal, saying Gerakan should not blame the Islamic party for its failure to muster support from the Chinese community.
