Olympian Saiful set to get national job
By -
KUALA LUMPUR: Two names were mentioned, but now it seems to be turning into a one-horse race.
Three-time Olympian Nor Saiful Zaini is the frontrunner for the post of national junior hockey coach.
The other name for the job, I. Vikneswaran, is believed to be not interested.
The Malaysian Hockey Confederation will have a meeting soon to decide the national junior coach, and he will helm Malaysia for the Junior World Cup in India from Nov 28-Dec 10.
Saiful, 59, who guided Tenaga Nasional to the Malaysia Hockey League treble last year, was also the coach of the national junior team from 2016 to 2020.
Vikneswaran, who was in charge of the national juniors last year, is said to be busy with his duties as the president of Kuala Lumpur Hockey Association, and he also wants to focus on his business.

NSAM sets modest target for Munich World Cup squad
KUALA LUMPUR: National shooters have been given a target of finishing in at least the top-15 at the ISSF World Cup Rifle-Pistol Championships in Munich, Germany on June 8 to 15. The squad travelling to Munich features a blend of youth and experience which includes two-time Olympian Johnathan Wong, Asia Cup champion Alia Sazana Azahari, Gan Chen Jie - who was named Sarawak Malaysian Games Sportswoman last year, as well as Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan. National Shooting Association of Malaysia (NSAM) executive secretary Hayati Shamsuri said the competition is expected to be stiff in Munich. "This World Cup in Munich is about giving our shooters exposure and an opportunity to improve their world rankings," said Hayati when contacted today (June 2). "Their performances in Munich will not be taken into consideration when selecting the squad for the SEA Games in Thailand this December. "This is a world-class event and the competition will be extremely tough. We have set a target for our shooters to reach the finals of their respective events. "However, given the calibre of the field, we would be satisfied with a top-15 finish." Hayati added that selection for the SEA Games will be based on performances on the national circuit. "We will use results from the national circuit to assess who has achieved the qualifying marks for the SEA Games," she said. "There is a broader pool of talent competing domestically. One leg of the circuit was held in April and the next is scheduled for June." Munich Rifle-Pistol World Cup squad: Johnathan Wong Guanjie, Wan Muhamad Syafiq Wan Mustaza, Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan, Haritz Iklil Hessly Hafiz, Alia Sazana Azahari, Nurul Syasya Nadiah Mohd Ariffin, Gan Chen Jie, Shaveena Mei Vejayan, Cheah Zen Hong.

Sarjit calls up Danish after Hafizuddin's injury in Jincheon
KUALA LUMPUR: National men's hockey coach Sarjit Singh is concerned with the goalkeeping department as Malaysia prepare for the Nations Cup at Bukit Jalil from June 15-21. First choice Hafizuddin Othman suffered a back injury during the five-match playing tour to Jincheon, South Korea from May 18-29. Hafizuddin, who has 112 international caps, suffered the injury in the third friendly. "Rafaizul Saini (ex-junior World Cupper) played in the fourth and fifth matches, but he was weak in defending penalty corners," said Sarjit. "I am concerned about the goalkeeping department and have called up another goalkeeper, Danish Afnan Faizal (who played in the 2023 Junior World Cup)." On the team's performance in Jincheon, Sarjit said: "Overall the players played well with a fast attacking game in all the five matches against the Koreans." World No. 13 Malaysia beat world No. 14 South Korea with identical scores of 4-1 in the first two matches, but drew the next two 5-5 and 1-1 before losing 4-2 in the fifth. The Speedy Tigers earned 23 penalty corners and converted five, while the Koreans converted five of 25 penalty corners. Malaysia are drawn in Group B of the Nations Cup with world No. 12 New Zealand, Pakistan (No. 15) and Japan (No. 16). Group A consists of world No. 9 France, South Africa (No. 11), South Korea (No. 14) and Wales (No.18).
