A police officer accidentally fired a pistol inside a vehicle parked near the venue of the World Exposition in Osaka, police said Monday, adding that no one was injured.
The 28-year-old male riot squad member mistakenly pulled the trigger when putting the pistol back in its case at around 7 p.m. Sunday, after finishing a security shift at the international event in the western Japan city, according to the Osaka police.
The handgun was fired downward, with the single discharged bullet making a hole in a seat and leaving a mark where it appears to have been embedded in the floor of the vehicle, they said.
Four other male officers were in the vehicle parked in an area off-limits to the public. The police vowed to prevent a recurrence and said the incident has not disrupted expo security operations.
The six-month world expo on Yumeshima, a man-made island in Osaka Bay, runs through Oct. 13.

Mizuhara also stole around $380,000 to buy baseball cards to resell them and to pay for his dental work. Additionally, he submitted a false tax return for 2022, knowing the income he had received that year far exceeded the amount reported, the documents said. The incident stunned the baseball world and Ohtani's fans after it emerged through media reports in March last year. Mizuhara came to the United States in 2018 to work as Ohtani's interpreter when the two-way star began his MLB career with the Los Angeles Angels. Mizuhara initially falsely told U.S. sports network ESPN that Ohtani had sent him the money to pay off his gambling debts. A federal district court in California sentenced Mizuhara in February after he pleaded guilty to the charges. He was initially ordered to report to prison in March, but was twice granted a deadline extension at his request. Hirokazu Kitano, 69, his son Hirotoshi, 41, and wife Noriko 68, have all been involved in operating traditional Japanese-style restaurant Kiichi in Kawachinagano, Osaka Prefecture, and are alleged to have violated the Food Sanitation Act. According to the prefectural government and other sources, the restaurant was handed a two-day business suspension order on Feb. 15 after 33 customers experienced developed symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea following meals at the restaurant or after consuming "bento" boxed meals sold between early and mid-February. Norovirus was detected in some of the people, which a local public health center determined was linked to food poisoning. Subsequently, 23 more people who ate at the restaurant between Feb. 22 and 24 fell sick and norovirus was again detected, prompting authorities to order the restaurant to close from March 2. The business prohibition order was lifted at the noon of March 18. Investigators later found that the establishment had continued to sell bento boxes during the initial suspension order. According to the sources, the three family members, all residents of Kawachinagano, were arrested for allegedly selling 11 bento boxes to customers on Feb. 16. They have admitted to the allegation, telling investigators they underestimated the norovirus situation.
