Government Plaza enhanced security, repaving Youree Dr.; mayor shares updates
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS)—During his weekly morning address, Mayor Tom Arceneaux addressed various issues impacting Shreveport residents.
He touched on improved security at Government Plaza, gave an update on the project on Youree Drive, and discussed his involvement with 'Love the Boot' week.
Government Plaza will soon have tighter security protocols for all guests, a move that Arceneaux says began before his time as mayor.
The mayor explains that the public safety committee, which included two current council members, Tabatha Taylor and Grayson Boucher, began enhancing security at Government Plaza during Adrian Perkins' administration.
'We have enhanced the process, and it really was improved when Sheriff Whitehorn took office. He brought on a was a security expert. we probably have one of the least secure government buildings in the country,' he explains.

Mayor Arceneaux also gave an update on the Youree Drive repaving project.
According to the Louisiana DOTD, the portion of the project stretching from Stoner Avenue to Kings Highway has been fully repaved. They are now in the process of repaving Kings Highway to Southfield Road.
Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux says that because Youree Drive is a state highway, the state decides what material will be used to repave it.
He says asphalt makes for a great surface but requires more maintenance.
'I think it's moved on quickly. Youree Drive is a very highly trafficked area, of course, so, it is a major inconvenience, but I think it'll be it'll be finished in fairly short order and people will enjoy the new surface,' says Mayor Arceneaux.
The project is set to be completed in late June.

Elon Musk's favorability among Republicans dropped 16 points since March, Quinnipiac says
Elon Musk's official role in the Trump administration recently came to an end. Many Republicans won't be sad to see less of him, according to the results of Quinnipiac University's latest public opinion survey. While a majority of Republicans still hold a favorable view of Musk, the number fell to 62% in the poll out Wednesday, down from 78% in March, Quinnipiac said. Overall, the Quinnipiac poll found that 30% of self-identified voters surveyed in the U.S. hold a favorable opinion of Musk, according to polling from June 5 to June 9. Republican and Democratic voters remain deeply divided in their views of the world's richest man, who contributed nearly $300 million to propel President Donald Trump back to the White House. Only 3% of Democrats surveyed said they held a favorable of view of the Tesla CEO, who was once seen as an environmental leader appealing to liberal values. Musk didn't respond to a request for comment. Musk and Trump had a very public falling out last week that started with Musk's disapproval of the president's spending bill and escalated into an all-out war of words that played out on social media. Musk said on Wednesday that he regretted some of the posts he made about Trump last week, adding that "they went too far." Even with a slide in his favorability, Musk is still popular among Republicans after his time running the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an effort to dramatically slash the size of the federal government. Among the Republican respondents to the early June poll, 80% rated Musk and DOGE's work as either excellent or good, while 13% said it was either not so good or poor. PBS, NPR funding on the line as House nears final vote on $9.4 billion in DOGE-backed cuts
The House on Wednesday moved a step closer to approving President Donald Trump's $9.4 billion spending cut package, which would codify some cuts originally proposed by the Department of Government Efficiency. The package would grant permission to the White House not to spend billions of dollars that had already been approved by Congress. The money would be clawed back from specific agencies like the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which distributes federally appropriated grants to National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Although the Wednesday procedural vote passed largely along party lines, a final vote expected Thursday could see some resistance from House Republicans who are uneasy about the popular programs that are being targeted, like PBS and National Public Radio. Given House Speaker Mike Johnson's narrow Republican majority, he can only afford to lose a handful of votes and still push the package over the finish line on a party-line vote. Johnson said earlier this week that he was "working on" getting enough Republicans on board to pass the DOGE package, CNN reported. Wednesday's vote also finalized changes to Republicans' "big, beautiful bill" that were required by the Senate before the measure was allowed to pass with a simple majority, rather than the typical 60-vote Senate threshold. Budget measures like the "big, beautiful bill" can be considered under a special set of rules known as reconciliation. The Senate's parliamentarian, who acts as a sort of referee in disputes over Senate rules, had flagged some provisions in the package earlier that she said were incompatible with the chamber's reconciliation rules.
