2 killed in ambush on security convoy in Syria
Damascus, May 7 (UNI) Two members of Syria's security forces were killed and four others wounded in an ambush on a medical evacuation convoy in the southern province of Sweida on Tuesday, state news agency SANA reported.
SANA said the ambush targeted security vehicles transporting wounded civilians from Sweida who had been receiving treatment in the nearby province of Daraa, following last week's armed clashes in the town of al-Surah in Sweida countryside.
The convoy was reportedly attacked by "outlawed groups affiliated with the so-called Military Council" while en route back to Sweida.
SANA cited an unnamed security official saying that the incident represents a "dangerous escalation" aimed at undermining a local reconciliation agreement previously reached with Druze religious leaders.
The official accused the assailants of acting with deliberate intent to disrupt the fragile stability in Sweida by resorting to "deception and sabotage."
Sweida has seen a rise in tensions in recent days following sectarian violence and clashes between Druze groups and pro-government forces. The fragile security situation has prompted local and national authorities to initiate talks to avoid further bloodshed, though violations like Tuesday's ambush cast doubt on the durability of those efforts.

HP court orders attachment of govt property in over 27-yr-old land compensation case
Shimla, June 12 (UNI) Highlighting prolonged government inaction, the district judge (forest) Ajay Mehta has directed the attachment of key government properties, including the PWD rest house at Tara Devi, two official vehicles from the PWD headquarters, furniture, computers, and heaters, over non-payment of land compensation to farmers for the past 27 years. The case pertains to land acquired in 1998 by the Public Works Department (PWD) Rohru division for the construction of the Baidhar-Thana-Tikkar road. Approximately 15 bighas were acquired, including apple orchards, and the land acquisition officer had initially assessed compensation at Rs. 6,252 per apple plant. Unsatisfied with the award, landowners from Tikka -- Diwan Chand, Bhajan Das, Inder Singh, Narain Chand, Bahadur Singh, Nihal Chand, Jagdish, Mohan Chand, Jai Krishan, and Rameshwar -- moved court in 2012. In 2017, the additional district and sessions judge ordered an enhanced compensation of Rs 26,575 per plant. However, the state failed to implement the order or deposit Rs 2.5 crore compensation, prompting the petitioners to file an execution petition in 2020. The court noted that despite three prior orders to attach government property, no action was taken to disburse the compensation. It further observed that both the secretary (PWD secretariat) and the Land Acquisition Officer (Winter Field, Shimla) failed to cooperate with court proceedings. While the state government has now sought an additional four months to deposit the dues, the next hearing has been scheduled for June 18. The court has made it clear that the attachment orders will remain in force until then. In a related matter, a single bench of Justice Ajay Mohan Goel of the Himachal Pradesh High Court recently ordered the attachment of Himachal Bhavan and 18 properties of HPTDC over unpaid arbitration awards and pending dues of retired employees, reflecting a broader trend of judicial strictness over financial defaults by the state. U.S. partially evacuate embassy staff from Iraq
Houston, June 12 (UNI) Non-essential U.S. embassy staff and their dependents have been ordered to leave Iraq due to unspecified security risks, sources from the U.S. State Department said. "Based on our latest analysis, we decided to reduce the footprint of our mission in Iraq," the State Department said in a statement on Wednesday. "We are constantly assessing the appropriate personnel posture at all our embassies," it added. Jerusalem, June 12 (UNI) Israel has informed US officials that it is fully prepared to launch a military operation in Iran, the CBS News broadcaster reported on Thursday, citing sources. Washington expects that Iran may launch a retaliatory strike on some American facilities in neighboring Iraq, the report said. This is one of the reasons why Washington advised some Americans to leave the region earlier on Wednesday, the report added.
