German qualifier Tatjana Maria capped an incredible week in London as she defeated American eighth seed Amanda Anisimova 6-3 6-4 on Sunday to become the first woman to win a title at Queen's Club in over half a century.
The victory marked the end of an extraordinary nine-day stretch for the mother-of-two, ranked 86 in the world, having stunned second seed and Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the previous round.
The 37-year-old becomes the oldest player to claim a WTA title since Serena Williams in Auckland 2020. She dropped only one set en route to the title and her dream run also included victories over Kazakh fourth seed Elena Rybakina and Czech sixth seed Karolina Muchova.
Maria dominated Anismova with big serves and earned an early break in the first set. She won 12 points in a row as she raced to a 4-1 lead and then held off a brief Anisimova fightback to close out the set.
Maria carried her momentum into the second as she again surged into a 4-1 lead. Her seventh ace of the match helped her move up 5-3, and she served out the match two games later to clinch her first title in over two years.
"A dream come true. (When) I came here, I was never thinking I could hold the trophy at the end. When we arrived my little girl said 'wow that's a nice trophy, so big' and I said 'OK let's go for it I will try to win it'," Maria said.
"In the end I've won it, it's incredible. So happy. Everything is possible if you believe in it. You go your way, doesn't matter which it is but you have to keep going. I want to show this to my kids and hopefully they are proud. It's amazing."
Maria threw her arms up as she watched Anisimova's forehand sail wide on match point, before both players shared an affectionate embrace at the net.
"I wouldn't be surprised if we see you in the Wimbledon final because you really had me running out there today," Anisimova said.
Having started the week as world number 86, Maria is projected to move up to world number 43 when the new rankings are released on Monday.
The Wimbledon warm-up event at Queen's welcomed back female competitors for the first time since 1973, when the Soviet Union's Olga Morozova won the title.
Wimbledon runs from June 30 to July 13. REUTERS

Renault announced Luca De Meo was leaving shortly after the newspaper Le Figaro reported he will take over the leadership of the luxury group Kering. Briatore, a title-winning boss of the Benetton and Renault F1 teams, returned to Formula One a year ago as executive adviser to De Meo and has been running the team since Oliver Oakes resigned as principal. Briatare has denied being tasked to improve the team's performance prior to selling it. Alpine are currently last of the 10 teams. "Nothing, absolutely nothing," Briatore said when asked after the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal what De Meo's departure changed for the team. "Nothing changed for me. Not for me or the team. And congratulations to Luca, new job," he said. Alpine will compete with Mercedes power units next season after Renault decided last September to end engine production at its Viry-Chatillon factory outside Paris. The team, whose investors include Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds and NFL stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, are currently alone in using Renault power units. De Meo said last October that Renault were spending up to 250 million euros ($289 million) a year on engine production while buying in from another manufacturer would cost less than $20 million. The stewards did not give further details but Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told reporters the protest related to two incidents when the safety car was deployed in the final laps of the race. He said the first item related to "erratic driving behind the safety car. George very heavily braked, obviously looking in his mirror for Max" and the second was "very clearly the distance that was left behind the safety car." Horner said the latter exceeded the permitted distance. Verstappen finished second in the race, ending a run of three successive wins at the Montreal circuit. "It's within our right to protest that so we've lodged the protest, it's with the stewards now and we'll see what they say," said Horner. While Russell and Verstappen are not friends and have clashed on the track, notably in Spain two weeks ago when Red Bull's four times world champion was heavily punished, Horner said it was not personal. Red Bull have however protested twice in the space of five races now, both times against Russell. In Miami in May they protested the Briton's third place, arguing the driver had failed to slow when yellow flags were waved during a virtual safety car period. Verstappen was fourth that time. Burns, who started the day one shot clear of Scott and J.J. Spaun, went out in three-over-par 38 and was at one under for the week. Immediately following a 96-minute weather delay that left pools of water on the greens and fairways, Scott bogeyed the eighth to fall two shots back. Burns then dropped a shot at the ninth after hitting his tee shot into thick grass. Scott, the 44-year-old Australian and 2013 Masters champion who is playing in his 96th consecutive major, mixed four bogeys with a birdie and reached the turn in three over 38. LIV Golf players Tyrrell Hatton and Carlos Ortiz, playing in the third-to-last pairing, were three shots off the pace and in a four-way share of third place with Spaun and world number 14 Viktor Hovland. Spaun fell back early as he opened his round with three consecutive bogeys, including at the par-four second when he caught an unlucky break as his approach took one hop and hit the flagstick before spinning back down the fairway some 50 yards.
