Kota Kinabalu: Some 340 students from the B40 group at Stella Maris Tanjung Aru received school supplies, recently, thanks to a corporate social responsibility initiative by Yayasan Kosma in collaboration with Persatuan Keusahawanan Cekap Sabah (PKCS). The contribution included school bags, exercise books, stationery and lunch boxes aimed at easing the burden of low-income families.
Advertisement Yayasan Kosma Chairman, Dato' Zamri Mohamed, expressed his appreciation for the unity displayed at the event, which took place on the grounds of a church. 'This programme is a wonderful initiative. I witnessed strong unity and harmony among those involved, regardless of race or religion,' said Zamri. 'I was surprised to learn that 58pc of students here at Stella Maris are from Muslim families.' 'This shows we can share a meal together without politics, only unity. I'm very pleased with what we're doing here in Sabah. 'For Yayasan Kosma, our goal is to help everyone. There are no divisions between people and today, we are doing this at a church, no less,' he said.
Advertisement Zamri also noted that although Kosma is based in Pahang, the foundation is committed to fulfilling the wider mission of the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) by helping communities across Malaysia. 'Kosma allocates approximately RM5 million annually to support initiatives like these throughout the country, using funds derived from tax contributions. 'LHDN cannot meet every request alone, they get thousands of requests daily and that's why they work with foundations like ours. We aim to ensure states like Sabah, Sarawak, Perlis and Johor all receive equal attention,' he added. Zamri also commended the leadership of the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, for his hands-on approach and visible impact in empowering cooperatives and community initiatives nationwide. PKCS Chairman, Dennison Indang, highlighted the unique challenges of poverty in urban areas like Tanjung Aru, where he said the B40 rate is high compared to others. 'In Pulau Gaya, for instance, over 95pc of households are in the B40 category. Urban poverty is more complex and persistent. Education is the most effective tool we have to end this cycle. 'When families struggle financially, dropout rates increase. Our goal is to break that cycle and motivate students. 'I myself am a product of such initiatives. I know how impactful they can be,' he explained. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? IRB urges businesses to adopt e-Invoicing ahead of deadline

KUALA LUMPUR: Businesses ready to adopt the e-Invoice system are encouraged to begin the transition immediately, even if their mandatory implementation phase has not yet started. Inland Revenue Board (IRB) chief executive officer Datuk Dr Abu Tariq Jamaluddin said the agency welcomes early adoption from businesses, stressing that there is no need to wait for the official rollout timeline. "We encourage all traders who are ready to participate in the e-Invoice system to do so. They are actually welcome to join without waiting for the designated timeline," he told reporters after visiting Media Prima News and Current Affairs Division facilities in Balai Berita, Jalan Riong, Bangsar today. IRB on last Thursday said that the implementation phase for e-invoices for taxpayers with annual income or sales exceeding RM1 million but not exceeding RM5 million has been postponed to Jan 1, 2026. Meanwhile, the implementation phase for taxpayers with annual income or sales up to RM1 million has been postponed to July 1, 2026 Taxpayers with an annual income or sales below RM500,000 are exempted from the implementation of the e-Invoice system. The board said the decision was made after the government acknowledged the efforts of taxpayers, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to comply with e-invoicing legal requirements, which demand sufficient preparation time and pose numerous implementation challenges. E-invoicing has been implemented in phases since last year, with the first phase starting on August 1 for businesses with annual revenue over RM100 million. The second phase began on January 1 this year, extending the requirement to businesses with annual revenue between RM25 million and RM100 million. Abu Tariq said both phases have received a positive response, with more than 300 million e-invoices successfully submitted to date. He added that although there is no specific revenue target for the initiative, improved record-keeping is expected to lead to an overall increase in tax collection over time. "Our aim is not only to improve tax compliance but also to help businesses maintain more accurate and organised records. This will support better reporting and ultimately contribute to more effective tax administration. "We don't have a specific target for this initiative but we expect that with better record-keeping, tax collection should also continue to increase," he added.

Ex-KL Tower operator loses bid to cite minister for contempt

Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Ho Kit Yen, FMT Text Size: The Kuala Lumpur High Court dismissed Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd's bid to bring contempt proceedings and secure an injunction against the government and LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd with costs of RM65,000. (Envato Elements pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here has dismissed an attempt by the former operator of KL Tower to initiate contempt proceedings against communications minister Fahmi Fadzil and seven others, including federal territories land and mines director general Azmi Mohd Zain. Justice Roz Mawar Rozain ruled that the plaintiffs – Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and Menara KL Sdn Bhd – failed to establish the commission of acts by the defendants that disrupted the administration of justice or court proceedings. Advertisement 'The plaintiffs' lease expired on May 31 and (the government, named as a defendant in the proceedings) is entitled to retake possession,' the judge said when handing down her decision. Ros Mawar added that LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd, LSH Best Builders Sdn Bhd, and Service Master (M) Sdn Bhd, also named as defendants, came in subsequently under a new concession agreement. She ordered Hydroshoppe and Menara KL to pay a total of RM25,000 in costs to the government and LSH Service Master. The court also dismissed an injunction application filed by Hydroshoppe against the government and LSH Service Master, holding that it had been rendered academic. Advertisement The judge ordered Hydroshoppe to pay the government and LSH Service Master an additional sum of RM40,000 as costs over the dismissal of the injunction. The court will hear the bids by the government and LSH Service Master to strike out Hydroshoppe's lawsuit on July 14. Hydroshoppe and Menara KL filed the suit claiming that the LSH group had induced the commission by the government of a breach of contract. They asked the court to declare the award of the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master void and unlawful. They also sought an estimated RM1 billion in damages, and for the concession to be transferred back to them. Lawyer Vinayak Sri Ram appeared for Hydroshoppe while senior federal counsel appeared for Fahmi and lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar represented LSH Service Master. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ukraine's drone attack halts work at electronic plant in Chuvashia, Russia says

(Reuters) -Production was temporarily suspended at an electronics company in Russia's Volga river region of Chuvashia, some 1,300 km (800 miles) from the border with Ukraine, after two drones fell on the plant's territory, the head of the region said on Monday. The strike - among the deepest into Russia by a Ukrainian drone in more than three years of the war - caused no casualties, Chuvashia Governor Oleg Nikolayev said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app. But "the responsible decision was made to temporarily suspend production to ensure the safety of employees" of the VNIIR enterprise where the drones fell, Nikolayev said. It was not immediately clear whether the drones caused any damage. Nikolayev said that another drone fell onto some fields in the area of the capital of the region, Cheboksary. The Russian defence ministry - which reports only how many drones were destroyed not how many Ukraine launched - said on Telegram that its units downed two drones over Chuvashia. In total, it said, air defence systems destroyed 49 Ukrainian drones overnight over Russia. According to photos and videos on unofficial Russian and Telegram news channels, the drones sparked a fire at the VNIIR plant that they said produces components for electronic warfare. Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Kyiv has often said that its attacks inside Russia are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Moscow's war efforts and are in response to the continued Russian strikes on Ukraine. The VNIIR Russian Scientific Research Design and Technological Institute of Relay Engineering with experimental production in Chuvashia is on the U.S. sanctions list, according to the U.S. Treasury website. A Ukrainian drone attack on the Voronezh region that borders Ukraine damaged a gas pipeline, cutting off gas supplies to 22 clients, the region's governor, Alexander Gusev, said on the Telegram.
