Real Madrid have big plans for 17-year-old academy ace in 2025/26 season

Real Madrid are already preparing for the next season under new manager Xabi Alonso, and one of the standout names in the latest update from AS is 17-year-old centre-back Joan Martinez.
Despite missing the last campaign due to a serious injury, Martinez is now part of the club's long-term plans and may soon be training with the senior squad.

It is to be noted that Carlo Ancelotti faced plenty of problems with injuries in central defence last season, and Madrid want to make sure they are better prepared this time.
Alonso need another centre-back
With Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, Raul Asencio, Dean Huijsen, and David Alaba already in the mix, that makes five centre-backs.
But Xabi Alonso may shift to a three-at-the-back system, meaning the club needs a sixth and that role is being earmarked for Martinez.

Though Martinez is still recovering from a torn cruciate ligament that sidelined him for the whole season, his performance during the pre-season tour in the United States left a strong impression on the coaching staff last year.

At just 17, Madrid are taking a careful approach with him. His immediate playing time will come with the Castilla side, where he can rebuild fitness and confidence.
Training with the first team
Madrid's plan is simple but smart: ease Martinez back through youth matches while gradually introducing him to the rhythm of the senior team.
He will train regularly with the first team and is expected to become a familiar face in that setup, even if he plays matches for Castilla on weekends.
While Jacobo Ramon could see earlier call-ups due to fitness and sharpness, Martinez remains the jewel of the youth system.
If all goes well, he could even end up as the fifth-choice centre-back by the time next season kicks off, which is a massive show of trust from Xabi Alonso and the club.

Arsenal unconcerned by Real Madrid links to defender

Arsenal are unconcerned over speculation linking Myles Lewis-Skelly with an exit and are optimistic about agreeing a new deal with the defender. Lewis-Skelly enjoyed a breakout campaign for Arsenal in 2024/25, with the teenager making 39 appearances in all competitions after debuting for the senior side in September. Advertisement The 18-year-old was a key part of Arsenal's run to the Champions League semi-finals and thrived in the quarter-final win over holders Real Madrid. Following those displays, the Spanish side have been linked with an ambitious move to sign Lewis-Skelly, whose contract has just 12 months to run. Real Madrid have targeted high-profile free agents in recent windows with Kylian Mbappe and Trent Alexander-Arnold among the names to have moved to the Bernabeu. Los Blancos are again scouting the market for potential Bosman deals, amid links to Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate and Lewis-Skelly. However, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Arsenal remain relaxed about the latter's situation. The North Londoners are keen to reward Lewis-Skelly with a new long-term deal, recognising his development at the Emirates. Advertisement He has emerged as Mikel Arteta's first choice at left-back and marked his senior England debut with a goal in March. Lewis-Skelly became the youngest debutant to score for England, beating the previous record held by Marcus Rashford. Arsenal are keen to tie up the defender to a new deal, after sealing an agreement for Gabriel Maghalaes earlier this month. The Brazilian defender ended speculation surrounding his future at the Emirates after signing a new contract. Gabriel is now contracted to the Gunners until 2029. Barcelona star's future for next season is ‘not 100% guaranteed'

A headline member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona is not guaranteed of his place at the club for next season. That's according to Blaugrana insider Achraf Ben Ayad, who points towards Ronald Araújo as the player in question. Advertisement Defender Araújo has of course seen his status in Hansi Flick's squad thrown increasingly into doubt over recent months. After returning from a long-term spell on the sidelines, the Uruguayan struggled to regain his best form, culminating in widespread criticism on the part of the Barcelona faithful. Not only that, but with Pau Cubarsí and Iñigo Martínez now firmly ahead of him in the defensive pecking order at the Camp Nou, some have gone as far as to call for Araújo to be shipped off at the earliest opportunity. And if the latest word stemming from the media is anything to go by, then this is a possibility which Deco and the Barca brass have not yet closed the door to… Advertisement As per a report from journalist Achraf Ben Ayad: 'Araújo's continuation is not 100% guaranteed. If the club receives a significant offer, it will consider the matter.' Conor Laird – GSFN

Pavlovic bemoans Tel's permanent move to Tottenham

Over the weekend, it was confirmed that Mathys Tel is leaving Bayern Munich permanently to join Tottenham, where he spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan. For Bayern midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic, who enjoyed playing with Tel, the departure is regrettable. Advertisement 'I personally find it a shame,' Pavlovic told Sky Germany after Bayern's commanding 10-0 win over Auckland City in the Club World Cup opener. 'He has been a very good friend of mine and still is. In the end, he and the club made the decision. Unfortunately, that's how it is.' Following his permanent move to Tottenham, Tel posted an emotional message on Instagram addressed to Bayern and their supporters. 'Dear Bayern fans, it's never easy to say goodbye to loved ones, but the time has come… I really loved every minute I played for this great club, and Munich will forever be in my heart,' the striker wrote, among other things.
