The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and health officials in multiple states are investigating a new salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers sold across the nation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this week.
Cucumbers grown by a Florida-based farm distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. are being linked to a salmonella outbreak, the FDA posted in a May 19 statement online.
The vegetables, grown by Bedner Growers Inc., were distributed to retailers, distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors this spring. The federal agency did not list where the cucumbers were sold.
So far, no deaths have been reported. But 26 people in 15 states have been sickened by salmonella, with nine patients needing to be hospitalized, according to the FDA statement.

Inspection links cucumbers to salmonella
In April, as part of a follow-up inspection in April 2025, FDA investigators collected an environmental sample from Bedner Growers Inc. that tested positive for salmonella and matched recent clinical samples from ill people.
The recent follow-up inspection stemmed from a 2024 Salmonella Africana and Salmonella Braenderup outbreaks linked to cucumbers grown at the same Florida-based farm. Recalled cucumbers from that outbreak sickened about 551 people in 34 states, the FDA previously reported. Of the patients, 125 people were hospitalized, the CDC reported, and the outbreak ended in late August 2024. No deaths were reported.
Last month's FDA's traceback investigation identified Bedner "as the common grower of cucumbers in the most recent outbreak," the FDA wrote in its announcement.
"Do not sell or serve whole cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Inc. between April 29, 2025 to May 19, 2025," the FDA wrote.

What is salmonella?
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and fatal infections in children, the elderly, and other people with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC.
Most people infected with salmonella start developing symptoms 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. Diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps are the main symptoms.
Most people recover without treatment, but in rare circumstances the infection can require hospitalization, according to the CDC. Pregnant women are also at higher risk of developing an infection from it and should seek medical attention if symptoms arise.
Consumers who ate the affected cucumbers and have symptoms should contact their health care provider to report their symptoms, the FDA said, and receive care.

How thousands of unreviewed ingredients got into our food — and what FDA can do about it
At least 1,000 ingredients in food products on our grocery store shelves have never been checked for safety by the Food and Drug Administration. Dozens have raised serious safety concerns among experts. How did the FDA allow this? The answer can be found in the agency's lax interpretation of a little-known legal designation that lets companies decide for themselves if ingredients in their products are safe. Fortunately, there are steps the agency can take right now to stem the flow of potentially unsafe ingredients into our food supply. Environmental Defense Fund outlined these steps in a letter we recently sent to the agency, but first let's take a closer look at how we got here. 'Generally Recognized as Safe' is a designation Congress created in 1958 to allow commonly used food ingredients to bypass the FDA's pre-market safety review process. It was meant for food substances — such as oils, vinegar, baking soda and common spices — that were widely considered safe due to their long history of everyday use. Since 1958, this status has been coopted to cover a universe of foods that extends far beyond its original intent. According to FDA regulations, a chemical can receive the designation if experts widely agree that scientific evidence shows its use to be safe. But because 'Generally Recognized as Safe' wasn't meant for newer ingredients, Congress allowed ingredients so designated to skip the FDA's premarket approval process — despite requiring similar evidence for other additives. Under the agency's current interpretation, companies can designate the use of a substance as safe and take products with that substance to market without informing the FDA or the public of its decision. While companies may voluntarily submit a notice to FDA offering safety evidence, they are not required to — and often don't. Our organization estimated that manufacturers have notified FDA of fewer than half of the ingredients they market as safe under the 'Generally Recognized' standard. Companies that do bother to submit a notice to the FDA are free to withdraw it at any point and take their product to market, provided they can cite evidence of its safe use. But this 'evidence' is often far from independent. Companies can, and often do, enlist their own employees or handpicked consultants to conduct their safety assessments. The result is a process riddled with conflicts of interest that lets unsafe foods into Americans' homes. We analyzed 'Generally Recognized as Safe' notices received by the FDA, obtained via a Freedom of Information request, and found that of the 1,163 submitted by companies between 1997 and April 2024, 192 were later withdrawn, with safety concerns cited in at least a dozen cases. We also identified 31 ingredients that companies have advertised to be recognized as safe, such as in press releases, trade publications and on their own websites (see the Appendix of our letter). However, we were unable to find the scientific evidence required under this standard to demonstrate these ingredients are commonly regarded as safe among experts. This raises red flags that FDA should be taking seriously. Although a comprehensive fix to the 'Generally Recognized' standard will require legislation from Congress, there are significant steps the FDA can take right away to ensure a more rigorous determination process that better protects Americans' health. Starting today, the FDA can use existing authority to remove safe designations from ingredients it deems unsafe and take them off the market. It can also notify manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers that the substance is no longer recognized as safe. In addition, the FDA can enforce the requirement that companies base safety designations on publicly available data. Although this won't curtail companies' ability to self-declare substances as safe, it will require those who do to be transparent in citing their evidence. Third, the FDA can enforce the requirement that safety assessments consider vital health information such as a substance's dietary sources, potential cancer risks and the cumulative health effects of similar substances. Finally, the FDA can make companies revise and resubmit their data for review when they submit 'Generally Recognized as Safe' notices that fail to comply with the criteria. The 'Generally Recognized as Safe' designation is far from a perfect system, but it can work better if it is interpreted and enforced more comprehensively. If the FDA is serious about protecting public health, it should start by fully exercising the tools already at its disposal. Brevard: How do you know if the water where you are swimming is safe?
How do you really know whether the water you're wading in, swimming or paddling in is safe? Should you even let your dog drink it? The risks make headlines every summer: bacteria from sewage or wildlife; toxins from algae that's already sickening manatees, dolphins and even alligators; rare, strange brain-eating amoebas; and emerging pathogens strengthening to "superbugs" due to antibiotic resistance. These risks tend to spike after heavy rains wash bacteria and nutrients from wildlife droppings and human sources from the land. So health departments periodically pull water samples from the beach surf zone during warmer months. But results aren't ready for a few days, so surfers and swimmers often don't know how much bacteria was in the water until after the fact. It's always swim at your own risk in Florida. But the following resources can help you check the chronic problem areas and make an informed choice on which days are safest for you and yours to take a dip: From March through September, this program samples the surf zone for bacteria at 10 Brevard beaches and at other beaches statewide every two weeks, posting the results on its website: But they only test during warmer months, when bacteria growth is higher and there are more people on the beach. On May 27, Jetty Park tested "moderate" for enterococcus bacteria. Enterococcus bacteria lives in the gut of humans and other animals. Its presence can indicate other, more dangerous bacteria in the water. Health officials measure the number of colony-forming units (CFU) of enterococcus per 100 milliliters of water sample. A sample is "good," if 35 or less CFUs. A "moderate" level is 36 to 70 enterococcus CFUs. Higher than that is a "poor" result, which triggers health officials to retest. A health advisory for bacteria in the water means that contact with the water may increase risk of skin, ear, eye, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. The nonprofit Surfrider also tests for bacteria in local waters. You can check out local results on their online map. You can see Surfrider's water sampling results on their online map at The group's recently released its Clean Water Report identifies beach waters where bacteria hot spots across the country. The group identified Ballard Park in Melbourne among the top 10 for bacteria hot spots due to the frequency of water samples failing to meet state health safety standards. Last year, 52% of Ballard Park samples exceeded the state health standard for enterococci bacteria, the group says. Vibrio vulnificus, one of the fastest growing bacteria known, is potentially deadly. It can enter the bloodstream via scratches and other open wounds. It is also a risk from eating raw oysters. You can learn about that risk at CDC's site: The risk of infection from water exposure is very rare but you can learn more at the state health department site: Last year, Titusville City Council unanimously approved a proposed $70,000 settlement agreement to resolve a lawsuit over a boy who became paralyzed after paddle boarding in the Indian River Lagoon near a city sewage spill in late 2020. According to the suit, in late December of 2020 the boy went paddle boarding and swimming in the lagoon in Titusville, departing from his mother's house, 4.5 miles south of Sand Point Park in Titusville. He was in the water several times, according to the suit. But on Dec. 23, water samples downstream of the ponds' lagoon outfalls exceeded water quality criteria for bacteria. In August 2011, 16-year-old Astronaut High student Courtney Nash of Mims died of the amoebic infection after swimming in the St. Johns River near the Brevard-Volusia county line. Before her death, Brevard County's most recent Naegleria fowleri cases were a Port Malabar Elementary third-grader who swam at Max K. Rodes Park in West Melbourne in 2002 and a 6-year-old boy who was infected in 1980. Both children died.
